Chapter 643: -Chapter 643-

Rae bit back a smile, knowing that making that expression would likely get his head blown off, but he really liked Jael saying his name.

He wouldn’t mind Jael killing him, but he would rather spend more time around him than die by his hand.

He also had to bite back his reflexive answer of ’you’. The Mafia King’s right-hand man wouldn’t appreciate that.

Right then, he was a dangerous stranger with an unknown goal. He was no different to Jael than the former members of his gang, and he could be disposed of just as quickly.

"Nothing really," He muttered, looking away. "You don’t remember me, but a couple of years back, you saved me from a prostitution ring. I just wanted to say thanks." He strung up a jumbled sentence.

Jael’s hold on his gun faltered, that was the last thing he had been expecting to hear. "What?"

"Madam Francesca’s orphanage? She used the orphanage as a cover for a prostitution ring. You rescued us."

Now Jael retracted his gun, awkwardly leaning back in his seat. He barely remembered it; it had been years now, and he dealt with a lot of bullshit on a daily.

The reverence in the kid’s eyes was unsettling. He wasn’t a hero, rules were just rules, and the bitch in question had broken a shit ton of them.

A valid proof of that had been how nothing had been done for the fucked-up kids that had been trapped in there. All they did was kill off the people running the ring and dip, leaving the survivors to fend for themselves.

"Hardly," He muttered, holstering his gun. "You didn’t have to go through all this trouble to say thanks, you could have gotten yourself shot."

Rae shrugged his thin shoulders on the bed, "There are worse things than getting shot."

Jael pressed his lips together, not quite sure what to say to that. He had fresh regret from bringing the kid back with him, for a completely different reason now.

"You’re going to get rid of me, aren’t you?" Rae asked, slowly sitting up.

The silence in the room had stretched out uncomfortably, Jael looking like he would like nothing more than to leave.

Jael knew that the kid wasn’t talking about getting killed, but he answered anyway, "No. You’ll be fine in a safe house-"

"I’m just going to keep killing gangs working for your Mafia House if you do that," He said calmly, too calmly to be a threat.

"I’m not interested in babysitting you." Jael countered flatly.

The only reason he had indulged the Alpha this much was because he felt a bit obligated to him, but even that had a limit. He was already being pretty generous.

"You don’t have to," Rae said earnestly, leaning forward. "I’m pretty good with my hands."

Jael remembered the shredded-up gang members he had seen, "Sure, you do," He muttered dryly, rising to his feet.

Rae’s lips turned down, tears pooling in his green eyes. "Please," He begged shamelessly, getting on his knees on the bed.

Jael paused, his lips pressed together. He didn’t understand why the kid wanted to join the Mafia, he could live a relatively safe life in Central Area.

A knock on the door interrupted his response, Caspian gingerly poking his head in. "I hope I’m not interrupting anything," He spoke softly, hesitantly, his eyes scanning the room.

Jael closed his eyes, curbing the urge to massage the side of his head. "No, I was just about to leave."

Rae’s glassy green eyes went hard as he scanned the visitor. The Omega was so beautiful that it made his teeth hurt from how hard he ground them. It was also obvious that Jael treated him gently; who exactly was he?

Jael walked up to the door to try to guide Caspian out of the room. Things had already gotten pretty complicated, he didn’t want to add Caspian to that mix.

Caspian stood his ground, however, trying to look around Jael’s way too broad shoulders. "Are they staying?" He asked curiously, almost hopefully.

Rae was wary of the Omega but knew when to take a chance handed to him.

"No," Jael answered instantly, displeased about how difficult it was to get rid of the kid he had taken along on a spur-of-the-moment decision.

"I don’t have anywhere to go," Rae’s teary voice intruded on the conversation.

Jael shot him a look over his shoulder, but Rae just ignored him, hurrying off the bed to nudge himself into the conversation.

Caspian took one look at the young, bandaged Alpha with tears in his eyes and was instantly on his side. "Aw, at least let him join us for dinner and spend the night."

Jael just sighed, knowing that he couldn’t say no to Caspian. To Caspian, this was some kid who got caught up in the middle of a gunfight, and he wanted to preserve that opinion.

"Sure," He agreed, catching Rae by his dirty and bloodied collar. "But you’re staying with me till then."

Rae let himself be dragged out of the room, smiling, happy to be manhandled.

"Jael! Wait-" Caspian tried to call out. He had planned to get the Alpha cleaned up and fed, he looked like he hadn’t gotten much to eat for a long time.

Jael had already predicted that, and he knew exactly how dangerous Rae was. The kid would definitely do everything possible to convince Caspian to let him stay at the mansion, and it would work.

Rae just gave him a blinding smile when he tossed him into the passenger seat, it was disconcerting.

"You’re leaving tomorrow," Jael said decisively as soon as he got in the car. "You can either take the safe house or get tossed downtown."

Rae looked contrite, but the expression didn’t touch his green eyes, "Could I work for your Mafia House? I’m very resourceful." He tried selling his good points.

"You can do that from outside the mansion." Jael was quick to remind him, already figuring out the kid’s goal even before he found out the truth about him.

Jael actually had nothing against the kid, he was also pretty useful, but he wasn’t pleased with how hard he kept trying to get into the mansion. Especially because the reason for that had everything to do with him.

He wasn’t interested in being idolized, and he didn’t want Rae feeling like he owed him something.
