Chapter 640: Chapter 394: Understanding This Principle

Ji Su was well aware of this fact. She called Gu Yucheng’s cell phone, but no one answered, so she called Gu Yaowan, "Wanwan, where’s Dad?"

"I don’t know where Dad went!" Gu Yaowan was watching TV.

"Was Dad at home last night?" Ji Su asked the child.

Gu Yaowan answered, "I don’t know, when I went to bed last night, Dad hadn’t come back yet..."

"Let me talk to the maid!" Ji Su called the maid to the phone, "Did Mr. Gu come home last night? Did he go out this morning?"

The maid replied, "Mr. Gu did come home last night, very late, and left early again this morning. However, when Mr. Gu left, I noticed he had his hand on his lower back..."

"When he comes home tonight, could you tell him to go to the hospital for a follow-up check-up, please?" Ji Su hastily said.

"Sure!" the maid agreed, "I’ve got it, Miss Ji."

"Thank you!" Ji Su hung up the phone.

She didn’t sleep well that night, so first thing in the morning, she called the maid again, "Did Mr. Gu come back?"

"Miss Ji, Mr. Gu came back very late last night. I told him, but he did not respond," the maid said, "I don’t know what Mr. Gu means... And he went to the company very early this morning."

"Okay, I got it." Ji Su got up, then went to Gu Group.

When she arrived, the secretary poured her a cup of hot water. Gu Yucheng was somewhat surprised to see her, "Susu, what brings you here?"

"Why haven’t you gone to the hospital for a follow-up check-up?" Ji Su questioned him right away, "Don’t you know that a back injury can be a minor or a serious issue?"

Gu Yucheng answered indifferently, "Anyway, you don’t want to be with me. If my back is hurt and certain functions are gone, you won’t care, right?"

"Gu Yucheng, can you stop being indecent?" Ji Su looked at him angrily, "I came here to talk to you seriously about this, and you are still talking like this! The doctor said if it’s light, there might be some hidden dangers not checked, but if it’s serious, there could be paralysis..."

Gu Yucheng gazed at her, "It doesn’t matter. If I become paralyzed, then so be it. After all, nobody wants to be with me..."

"Gu Yucheng, are you crazy!" Ji Su didn’t expect him to be so pessimistic, pointing at him, "What’s wrong with you?"

Gu Yucheng held her little finger, "Susu, you still care about me, right?"

Ji Su pulled back her hand from his grasp, "I’m not caring about you, I’m just grateful to someone because you saved me, leaving scars behind. If something happens in the future, I don’t want to owe you anything!"

"Rest assured! You don’t owe me anything. I did it voluntarily. For you, even if I were to die, I’m willing," Gu Yucheng said with rare affection.

Ji Su was very angry, "You can seek treatment or not, I’ve already come personally to tell you. It’s up to you now!"

As she turned to leave, Gu Yucheng wrapped his arm around her, "Alright, can’t you stop being angry? Susu came all the way to the company for me. If I don’t appreciate it, wouldn’t I be neglecting your good intentions? I’ll go now, is that okay?"

Ji Su struggled to break free from his embrace, but he wouldn’t let her. Instead, he made another request, "Will you come with me, please?"

Thinking of the injury he sustained for her sake, she agreed, "Let me go, and I’ll go with you. This injury was sustained because of me, I will take responsibility."

"You take responsibility?" Gu Yucheng raised a sly smile, "If I become... impotent, will you take responsibility too?"

As he spoke, he drew himself even closer to her body, as if to prove whether he was still capable or not.

"Gu Yucheng!" Ji Su’s face turned red with anger, "That would be what you deserve! Let go of me!"

Seeing her earlobes flush red, Gu Yucheng stopped teasing her and let her go. They left the company together and headed towards the hospital.

Since they needed to wait for the test results after taking the X-rays, he took her to lunch.

Gu Yucheng opened the car door for Ji Su. As he was about to close the door, he accidentally knocked Lu Xiao’s gift, the parting gift she had given which he had never thought of opening.

At that moment, the gift fell out, and it looked somewhat familiar to him.

He picked it up and saw that it was a tie from more than a decade ago. That tie, he had once used it to bandage a wound for a little girl. Could it be that the little girl was Lu Xiao?

Gu Yucheng finally understood Lu Xiao’s feelings for him, whether it was gratitude or appreciation, love no longer mattered.

And he also realized how important Ji Su was in his heart.

He put the tie in his trouser pocket and then went to a hotel for lunch with Ji Su. After ordering the food, Ji Su went to the restroom, while he called the waiter over, "Keep an eye on things here, I will be back shortly. If Miss Ji asks, tell her I am handling some business."

"Yes, Mr. Gu!" the waiter replied.

Ji Su emerged from the restroom to find Gu Yucheng’s figure nowhere in sight. She looked around; he was not on the balcony either. The waiter said, "Miss Ji, Mr. Gu mentioned he had to deal with something but will be back shortly. Your meal is served; please go ahead and eat!"

Ji Su nodded. She had intended to wait for him to come back to eat together, but if she did, wouldn’t that give him the impression that she still harbored feelings for him?

Besides, she was three months pregnant now, and the baby needed more and more nutrients. So she didn’t stand on ceremony and enjoyed the meal.

Wherever Gu Yucheng dined, he always ordered dishes that she liked. Her palate had been spoiled by him!

Ji Su told herself not to dwell on the past. No matter how beautiful it was, it was gone now.

Now, he was him, she was her, and the only connection between them were their two children.

While Ji Su was seriously eating, Gu Yucheng had already arrived at the nearest jewelry store. He still remembered the past, when he bought a crystal hair clip for Ji Su, but then Ji Su cut her long hair and sold his gift—a tie clip—to buy something for him. However, he had used his tie to bandage a wounded little girl.

Due to a twist of fate, there was still love between them, yet unexpectedly, that little girl grew up and composed a love song with him!

The salesperson, noting his extraordinary presence, eagerly asked, "Sir, what do you need? Can I help you?"

"Bring me a crystal hair clip!" Gu Yucheng said.

The salesperson quickly brought several styles to him, "Sir, please take a look. Which one do you like?"

He still remembered the one he chose for her initially: a beautiful butterfly design covered with crystals, making the clip sparkling and translucent. It was a pity that it only ended up in a gift box and later, who knows where it went!

"This one!" Gu Yucheng said.

After purchasing it, he rushed back to the hotel. He nearly ran to the private dining room, arriving to find Ji Su eating lunch. He sat opposite her, still panting.

Ji Su glanced at him. Despite it being deep autumn and far from hot, beads of sweat formed on his forehead. Why was he panting like this?

"Is it good?" Gu Yucheng asked her.

"It’s fine," Ji Su responded indifferently, eyes downcast, as she continued eating.

Gu Yucheng remained silent, taking a sip of water, then quietly watched Ji Su across the table. The more she ate, the happier he felt.

When Ji Su had almost finished her meal, Gu Yucheng finally spoke, "Susu, can you close your eyes, please?"

Ji Su looked at him perplexed, evidently unwilling to comply. "Gu Yucheng, stop playing. If you’re not going to eat, go to the hospital!"

"Susu, be good and listen to me just this once, okay?" Gu Yucheng coaxed her.

Ji Su didn’t know what trick he was up to, but she still refused to concede.

"Just pretend it’s because my back hurts, and be a good girl for once, okay?" Left with no other choice, Gu Yucheng pulled this excuse hoping she would close her eyes.

Ji Su’s lips twitched, but in the end, she did not object and obediently closed her eyes.

At that moment, Gu Yucheng pulled a small gift box out of his suit pocket, opened it, and held the Butterfly Crystal Clip in his palm. He rose and walked behind her, looking at her straight, shiny black hair that fell smoothly down her back.

He couldn’t help but wonder about Ji Su’s state of mind back then—cherishing her long hair so deeply, she had cut it off just to buy him a present, out of love for him.

But a young man’s mind is not as delicate as it is with age.

Men only come to slowly appreciate the depths of a woman’s love for them after years of growth and experience, realizing the rarity and value of such emotions.

Then, Gu Yucheng touched Ji Su’s long hair, clumsily gathering it in his hand, and tried several times before he could adeptly fix the Butterfly Crystal Clip into it due to his lack of practice with such tasks.

With her eyes closed, Ji Su felt him fumbling with her hair and couldn’t help but ask, "What are you doing now?"

Gu Yucheng’s voice rose near her ear, "Susu, do you remember the time we exchanged gifts? You bought a tie clip, and I bought a crystal clip, but in the end, neither of us wore what the other had given."

How could Ji Su forget? It was the testimony of young love, as simple as that.

But why bring up such matters from the past now?

"Susu, your long hair is really beautiful..." Gu Yucheng held her hair with his thick, somewhat rough palms. In his youth, he struggled, working part-time while studying, even though Gu Bohan was wealthy, he was not kind to this illegitimate son!

The rough calluses on Gu Yucheng’s hands contrasted sharply with the softness of her hair—a stark difference of hardy and delicate, coarse and smooth.

With her eyes still closed, Ji Su bluntly said, "If you just wanted to compliment my hair, can I open my eyes now?"
