Finally, the three days of midterm exams began.
I felt somewhat confident about each subject. I think I managed to avoid failing anything.
On the second day, the last subject was Japanese history.
I studied really hard for this subject because it’s taught by Tenjō Sensei.
Under the watchful eye of Tenjō Sensei, who was also the examiner, I filled out the answer sheets one after another.
When the bell rang to signal the end of the exam, I was confident I had scored full marks.
I knew it, the power of love is great.
Tenjō Sensei collected the answer sheets and then proceeded to the homeroom for dismissal.
“Only one more day of midterms left. Don’t let your guard down and make sure to finish strong.”
She concluded with a cheer for the whole class and the day was over.
“Nishiki-kun, you look a bit pale. Are you feeling okay?”
It was Tenjō Sensei who approached me with concern.
“I’m just sleep-deprived because I crammed all night.”
“Were you that unprepared?”
“I just wanted to score a perfect hundred in Japanese history.”
“Full score, huh? That’s bold.”
“Sensei, please look forward to grading it.”
The conversation is cut short.
Tenjō Sensei seems to want to say something more, but the next words don’t come out.
“? Sensei, if you have something to say, I’m listening.”
Just as I urge her, a female student interrupts our conversation.
“Reiyu-chan Sensei, is it still going to take a while? Can I borrow Nikki for a moment?”
Mayuzumi-san approaches us with Akira.
“Go ahead. I’m done here.”
Tenjō Sensei yielded her turn in the conversation and then left the classroom.
“Nikki, why don’t you go have lunch with Akiaki? Let’s go to a family restaurant or fast food place, and you can teach me about classical literature for tomorrow! You were good at liberal arts subjects, right?”
“Sure, but I didn’t bring my textbook or notes.”
My bag only contains the materials for today’s test subjects.
“You can just use ours to teach us.”
Akira says bluntly.
“Got it. Both of you struggle with classical literature, huh?”
Akira seems good at math. Perhaps she’s more of a science type after all.
“Yeah, exactly. Despite it being Japanese, I just don’t get it at all. What’s with the irregular conjugations and stuff? I wish they wouldn’t change so casually. I always need a modern Japanese translation!”
Mayuzumi-san seems to have given up on the subject.
“Then let’s hurry before it gets crowded.”
“It’s rare for Akira to be proactive. Are you that hungry?”
“Shut up and get ready quickly.”
“Yes-yes.”
As I go to pick up my bag, I’m still caught up on Tenjō Sensei’s reaction from earlier.
Could she have had some urgent matter?
We haven’t been eating breakfast or dinner together lately, so we don’t have many conversations outside of school.
She’d usually message or call me if there was something important, but her approaching me subtly to talk was kind of odd.
“…Sorry, go ahead without me. Let me know the place by phone, and I’ll catch up soon!”
“Huh, Nikki! Where are you going?”
“I’ve got something to discuss with Sensei!”
Experience has taught me that putting off things that concern me has never led to anything good.
Following my intuition, I quickly chase after Tenjō Sensei.
I dash down the stairs, searching for a glimpse of Tenjō Sensei.
Contacting her directly via smartphone would be faster, but it’s frowned upon for a teacher and a student to communicate privately within the school.
Since I couldn’t find her on my way, I headed to the staff room.
But even there, Tenjō Sensei was nowhere to be found.
When I asked the other teachers where she might be, they said she had gone to the swimming club’s room.
I made my way towards the pool at the edge of the school grounds.
Since most students quickly left the school due to the exam period, the hallways were empty.
With the majority having gone home, I could run without worrying about bumping into anyone.
The sunlit corridor was dazzling, and running through the quiet, deserted hallway as if I owned the space felt nice.
Only the sound of my footsteps echoed cheerfully.
As I passed by the gymnasium, I heard the sound of a basketball being dribbled and a voice giving a warning.
I involuntarily stopped and stealthily peeked inside.
“Hey! The gymnasium is off-limits during the exam period!”
Tenjō Sensei was scolding students who were sneakily playing inside the gym.
Our school’s most beautiful teacher stood imposingly while exuding an overwhelming presence.
Even the mischievous-looking senpai with an athletic club vibe reluctantly obeyed her pressure and grudgingly returned the ball to the storage room.
It seemed they had been playing basketball as a break from studying for exams.
“Stop lingering! Go home immediately after you return it!”
At Sensei’s sharp command, those Senpais threw the ball into the storage and then scattered and hurried out of the gym like baby spiders.
“Make sure you put it away properly! State your class and name!”
“I’m sorry!”
They said, not noticing me at the entrance as they fled at full speed.
“Seriously now…”
Sensei seems a little annoyed.
I approached her from behind while silencing my footsteps.
In the spacious gymnasium, it was just the two of us.
“Tenjō Sensei, you’re so strict~”
“What did you say!?”
When I teased her, she turned around with a scary face.
Whoa, a beautiful woman really has a different presence when she’s angry.
Her eyes were so strong that I couldn’t help but flinch a little.
“Nishiki-kun, what are you doing here?”
Sensei was also surprised by my appearance.
“I was just curious because you seemed to want to talk about something in the classroom.”
“How did you find me?”
“Sensei’s voice carries me here. Well, you’re pretty merciless, huh?”
“We lose if a teacher is taken lightly by the students.”
She nonchalantly placed one hand on her hip.
Of course, as a school with a certain level of academic advancement, there shouldn’t be any delinquents who are constantly in trouble at Kiyō High School.
