Chapter 29: The precious bloodline

’’Meow~’’ The black cat jumped onto Scarlet’s table, performing some weird actions to draw the demon tree’s attention.

’’Meow~’’

Yet, the demon tree just lifted her branch to greet Matt awkwardly while peeking timidly at Bobby.

Well, Bobby ignored the demon tree and danced weirdly in front of the red dragon, who was just yawning tiredly.

Scarlet frowned and looked at the beasts. She hesitated for a while and said,

’’I think... our beasts will have a good relationship.’’

Rocky sighed.

’’I think so... It’s hard to find beasts that don’t hate mine. After all, they came from the Black Zone.’’

Matt screamed and wildly flailed around on the table in a tantrum after failing to draw the demon tree’s attention.

Rocky scowled and flicked a stress-reducing pill to Matt. He grumbled,

’’Come on, Matt. Don’t act like that... It’s quite embarrassing.’’

Matt’s eyes were tearful as he chewed the pill.

Scarlet giggled and petted Matt’s head, comforting the cat.

’’Do you know... your cat makes me remember something.’’

She looked at him tenderly and smiled.

’’Do you remember what you said when you first met me at the banquet of the Great Clans?’’

Rocky rubbed his chin for a moment before answering,

’’Sorry, my memory’s a bit vague.’’

Actually, he only remembered her scarlet hair from that event. Her hair color was too eye-catching among the kids of the Great Clans.

But he couldn’t tell her that he only remembered her hair. He thought she would be sad, maybe even angry.

(Indeed, women always have good memories.)

Suddenly, Scarlet’s face showed a clear trace of sadness as she said,

’’It’s such a shame. This time, I can’t go to the banquet with you... and I have to go with that bastard.’’

Rocky raised his eyebrows for a moment.

’’Banquet? You mean the banquet among the Great Clans?’’

...

’’Yep... This time, the Stephens Clan is hosting it. I don’t really know what they want.’’

...

Rocky’s eyes brightened as he suddenly grabbed Scarlet’s hands, making her blush.

Her heartbeat raced nonstop.

’’P-Please, help me,’’ Rocky pleaded.

***

"I owe you this time... If you ever want me to do anything in the future, I won’t refuse," Rocky said.

"Is that a promise?" Her voice came through the door to Rocky, who was standing outside Scarlet’s room.

"Of course."

The door slowly opened, revealing the charming girl in a crimson evening gown. Sparkling diamonds adorned the dress in crisscross patterns, making her look more gorgeous than ever.

She pursed her lips, then slowly parted them, revealing their crimson shade.

Her red eyes gleamed sharply, yet there was still a hint of embarrassment when Rocky stared at her as if she were some strange being.

"Do I look bad?" Her voice was filled with worry.

Rocky shook his head, trying to push away his dirty thoughts, and raised his thumb.

"N-Not at all. I’m just stunned by your beauty."

...

Her lips slowly curled upward as she stepped closer to Rocky, pressing him against the wall.

"Really?"

Rocky gulped and instantly activated his skill. He didn’t want to keep playing along with her anymore.

Just like that, he turned into a black cat.

He jumped onto her right shoulder and nodded.

"Not interesting at all." She pouted and walked down the stairs.

His plan was simple. Rocky would become Scarlet’s third beast. Only that way could he attend the banquet in the name of Scarlet’s beast.

His goal was to save his big sister, no matter what. He couldn’t afford to wait until he was strong enough. He believed that by the time that moment came, his big sister would already be dead.

Every single night, he couldn’t stop thinking about her safety. It weighed on his heart every time.

(Hope my sister is still alright.)

***

Scarlet stepped in the carriage and sat down.

Austin, Scarlet’s grandfather adjusted his monocle slightly while reading a small book – sitting opposite Scarlet – without taking a look at Rocky, he said.

"Level 34 with a Calamity rank?.. Even from the Black Zone?"

Austin looked up and set his small book down.

"Where did you find that beast? It’ll be a big problem if you bring it to the banquet."

Scarlet glanced away.

"It’s none of your business."

Austin grumbled, then let out a sigh.

"You’re my granddaughter... Do you understand what that means? You must keep your dignity."

"We are the face of the Great Clan. Protecting our reputation is the priority of every member."

Scarlet replied coldly,

"I don’t care."

Austin scowled.

"Brat! Don’t piss me off. I know everything. Don’t think I don’t know that cat’s identity."

"You should stop playing with that trash from the Stephen Clan. The one you should be with is Travis. At such a young age, he already has a Calamity-ranked beast and a second beast at Apex rank. He has a very promising future."

"Only that kind of man suits you. Not that trash."

He roared.

"Your duty is to preserve the precious bloodline of our Clan... Do you know why you can tame two beasts with Calamity rank? Because your grandmother, your parents, and I have already fulfilled our mission."

"And now, it’s your turn."

Scarlet kept looking away, completely ignoring the old man.

"You ungrateful brat!" Austin snapped.

Just like that, the trip to the Stephen Clan was completely silent.

As soon as the carriage stopped at the gate of the Stephen territory, Scarlet stepped out first. She didn’t want to walk beside her grandfather.

Rocky shook his head and rubbed Scarlet’s hair to comfort her.

Scarlet let out a tired breath and spoke as she slowly unclenched her fists.

"Don’t think too much. Things like this always happen."

Rocky felt guilty. After all, he had forced her into this situation. He promised himself that if she ever asked him for anything, he would help her without hesitation.

She was a good friend—someone he would treat gently.

(I’m going to apologize to her properly after all this is over.)
