Chapter 314: His Advantage

The echoes of her hurried footstep resonated through the quiet night as Samantha abandoned her escape route. She fled the ship’s port without thinking twice, the adrenaline-fueled sprint drowning out the distant sounds of the ship’s departure. She no longer cared if the hood of her cloak veiled her appearance or not– that man had clearly seen right through it!!

All her mind could focus on presently was running away from those nightmarish eyes that seemed to have spotted her, despite her invisibility. She kept running without daring to look back, her breathing becoming more and more shallow as she navigated the quiet passage. She hadn’t pictured which route she was taking and simply followed the ones her legs led her through, and only when the distant sounds of fireworks echoed within the vicinity, did she come to the realization that she had strayed away from the crowd.

That was a good thing right? The guards on patrol won’t be able to find her here.

In the aftermath of her escape, Samantha’s trembling hands clutched at the fabric of her cloak. The port had long disappeared from her view, but the fear of whom she had seen still lingered heavily in her heart. Everything about that man made her insides shiver like a haunting nightmare, and what she felt was far worse in comparison to how she had felt being Ivan’s captive.

Ivan was no longer the devil in her story, but a totally different being who won’t leave her alone.

Catching her breath, Samantha sank to her knees when they wouldn’t stop quivering, and the thought of the ship leaving without her almost brought tears to her eyes. She was so close! So close to finally escaping from this confusing land but... no matter what she does, there was always an obstacle waiting ahead to make a mockery of her. For once, if things could actually go her way, she would be satisfied, just once she wanted things to happen her way, but what was the use now?

What wrong could she possibly have done to suffer like this?? The earlier joy in her heart had been simultaneously crushed once again, and the painful part about all of this is the fact that there is absolutely nothing she can do to make it stop.

"Why does this keep happening to me?" She whispered in a trembling voice, as if fighting back the lump in her throat.

Overwhelmed by her own failures, she clutched the side of her head with both palms, seriously wondering if her life was jinxed.

The best thing she could do as of now was to return to the elven community, as that was the only place she felt safe and secure. She couldn’t risk going back to the port and running into Marius again.

Steadying her emotions with a deep, concentrated breath, she wiped away the tears in her eyes and rose to her feet.

Before she could make a move by stepping out of the corner where she hid, her body system immediately paralyzed itself after hearing the sound of approaching footsteps heading towards her direction. With a conscious mechanism, Samantha instinctively leaned her whole body against the wall, as if trying to become one with the hard surface, and her eyes widened when the approaching footstep stopped not faraway from the corner where she hid.

She was curious to know who had ventured in this direction, her heart beat drumming rapidly as her mind could only think of one person.

She prayed she was wrong!

Finding the strength to steal a peek at who was standing there, her green eyes caught sight of the silhouette’s back. She immediately covered her mouth with her palm, hindering herself from screaming out in pure terror, because she knew, without a doubt, that the figure standing there had to be Marius.

She hid back when the imposing figure swiftly turned around, whilst she tried her best to stay quiet, but it seemed her racing heart was in clear disagreement.

"Why hide when I can sense your presence behind that wall?" He questioned, and his footsteps grew louder as he came to stand in front of the wall. He then knocked on it, to the point it sent tremors skittering through her nerves.

"Ding dong, I know you can hear me. Open up the door, I only want to play." He whispered in a melodic tone, but it sounded sinister, like a devil trying to lure in a prey. His deep voice echoed with a subtle hint of warning, but when Samantha remained paralyzed in her spot, unable to move, Marius materialized by her side in seconds.

Her eyes dilated in shock as she was standing face to face with Marius yet again, and he smiled, an unhinged smile that made Samantha back away from him, regardless of the fact that she was cornered with absolutely nowhere to run to.

"I told you to come out, didn’t I? They say one’s personality tends to change when they are reborn, and that is the only reason I’m sparing you for your shitty attitude tonight." He lifted a hand to touch her chin, but Samantha was quick to avert her face elsewhere, as though his touch was a plague that could ruin her existence.

"Stay away from me!" Samantha warned, unable to resist a glare his way.

"Or else what?" He dared, stepping closer and trying to breach the distance between them, but he immediately stopped when thousands of vines broke through the solid ground and formed a protective shield around her. Her eyes were aglow with an otherworldly light, and she screamed.

"I SAID STAY AWAY!!" Extremely sharp thorns emerged from the vines like sharpened blades, and a hundred of those thorns were sent at Marius who evaded each one. They kept coming with no restraint, lunging themselves at the skilled Marius who was forced to take a step back.

Samantha used the opportunity her vines had created to slip away, but she had barely made it far when an invisible force held her down. To her dismay, she was unable to move, whilst she was rooted to her spot until Marius was standing right in front of her.

"You want to leave? It is fine, but first, I have something important to show you." A purple crystal suddenly appeared before Samantha, and in its depth, she could see little Alain in a cage, along with other helpless children. Her pupils dilated as she watched one of the cages open, and a child was roughly dragged out, only to be taken away, but the crystal did not reveal where the child had been taken to.

"If you leave, he dies next."

"No." Samantha shook her head, "this... this is an illusion. There’s no way this is real! I have heard and seen for myself how you toy with the minds of everyone, but such trickery won’t work on me! I won’t be a victim to ur stupid games! Do you understand?"

"Fine," he stepped aside, "you are free to leave if you want to. I don’t have to make you believe it, cause there’s a chance you might ruin my game plan. I shall send his little corpse to you in GreenHollow, do you love the sight of a deformed corpse? I shall wrap it up so you can feel two things; regret and your inability to save the little boy you treasure. What will his parents think of you when you return without their child? I don’t even understand why I’m explaining common sense."

He chuckled, and then the intriguing smile on his lips faded, "come with me, and I won’t let a single hair on his head be touched. Refuse, and I’m going to make sure this decision will be the worst of your regrets."

"Why... are you doing this to me? To him? He’s just a child."

"I know he’s a child. I suppose I do have some earthling sympathy for the little one, otherwise he’d be dead. Then I thought, what use would it be to get rid of such a lovely child when I can use his presence to my advantage?"
