Chapter 298: Chapter 298

"If I let you take control," I told him, breathing hard now even inside my own head, "you will slaughter them all. Every last one. You will not stop at Darren."

(Good.)

"You will make me no better than him."

He laughed. (Darren brought poison into our blood. Darren burned our pack house. Darren gathered rogues from every corner of the earth to hunt our mate and kill our unborn children.

(And you care about being better than him? I do not want better. I want justice. I want fear carved into the hearts of every man who hears your name for the next hundred years. Let me up, Damon. Let me show them what happens when they touch what is ours.)

I was silent for a long moment, my vision stayed black. I felt his anger and pain.

"You want his head?" I asked slowly. "You want every one of those rogues scattered across the trees ripped apart until the dirt drinks their blood?"

His growled as he spoke (I want their screams to crawl through these woods for days. I want Darren’s last breath rattling in his throat while he watches every man he brought with him die before him. I want Lyra to see what happens to anyone who even thinks of touching her. That is what I want.)

I let out a long, shaking breath. My fingers curled into the dirt. My chest rose and fell harder.

"Then help me," I said finally, like the decision had already been made. "Help me stand and I swear to you, none of them leave these woods alive."

(Now,) he said, his voice dark with satisfaction,(now you sound like my Alpha.)

That was what my wolf told me and I will not lie to you, hearing him say that, hearing him claim me again when half the world thought I was about to bleed out right here in the dirt, it made something deep inside me bare its teeth one last time.

Because you need to understand this, I am Damon Thornvale. I do not go quietly. I do not fall like some nameless soldier in a battle no one will remember. If I was going to die tonight, the whole damn forest was going to know my name before I hit the ground for the last time.

So I told myself to rise.

I told myself to push through the silver even though it burned through my veins like someone had taken the sun itself and melted it into my blood. Do you know what silver does to us? It does not just kill. It humiliates. It drags out every heartbeat, every breath, until you feel the poison crawling through your own body with claws, and it hurts because it is supposed to.

But I was still going to shift. I had to. Because my mate was out there running and my pups had not even taken their first breath yet.

So yes, I pushed.

I dragged air into my lungs. My whole body was shaking so hard I could feel my heartbeat punching against my ribs like it was trying to break out.

But I told myself to stand.

I told my wolf to rise.

I told my body to obey me one last time because I am the Alpha here, not the pain, not the silver, not the bastard waiting out there for me to die.

And then it happened.

I felt it another stab.

Right in my chest. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Not once. Not twice. Over and over again like whoever held that blade was trying to carve straight through bone to see what my heart looked like before it stopped beating.

And you need to understand something: the silver in my side was one kind of pain, but this — this was different. This was worse than fire. This was the kind of pain that steals everything at once.

I will be honest with you because what is the point of lying now?

I couldn’t shift the pain was too much.

And then I heard my brother’s voice.

Darren.

"Oh, brother," Darren said, and then he pushed it deeper and twisted it. I felt it scrape bone. I swear to the goddess herself I felt it. "I want to carve your heart out. That is the only way to make you truly dead."

"I want to rip your face off my face. Because I am tired of seeing you in the mirror."

He shoved the knife again, harder this time, and leaned close like he wanted to make sure I heard him through the ringing in my ears.

"Let me tell you a little secret, brother..."
