"If I let you take control," I told him, breathing hard now even inside my own head, "you will slaughter them all. Every last one. You will not stop at Darren."

I was silent for a long moment, my vision stayed black. I felt his anger and pain.

"You want his head?" I asked slowly. "You want every one of those rogues scattered across the trees ripped apart until the dirt drinks their blood?"

His growled as he spoke (I want their screams to crawl through these woods for days. I want Darren’s last breath rattling in his throat while he watches every man he brought with him die before him. I want Lyra to see what happens to anyone who even thinks of touching her. That is what I want.)

I let out a long, shaking breath. My fingers curled into the dirt. My chest rose and fell harder.

"Then help me," I said finally, like the decision had already been made. "Help me stand and I swear to you, none of them leave these woods alive."

That was what my wolf told me and I will not lie to you, hearing him say that, hearing him claim me again when half the world thought I was about to bleed out right here in the dirt, it made something deep inside me bare its teeth one last time.
