Chapter 139: Chapter 139.

I turn toward the door before he can say anything else. My head feels like it’s spinning trying to make sense of everything.

Any of my brothers funding an attack. Zane’s sister dying because of it.

None of it makes sense.... Not a single piece.

I reach the door and pull it open.

Behind me, Zane’s voice cuts through the room one last time.

"You’re not going to like what you find."

I don’t turn around because if I do, I might actually start doubting myself.

And right now that’s the one thing I absolutely cannot afford.

"My brother didn’t kill your sister," I say over my shoulder.

Then I walk out.

The door slamming shut behind me, echoing down the hallway while my mind keeps replaying the same impossible thought.

They w wouldn’t ever do something like that.

Would they?

———

I wake up before my alarm... and for a few seconds I just lie still, staring at the ceiling. The room is quiet, the early morning light barely creeping through the curtains. Everything feels too calm for how loud my head is.

I push the blanket off and sit up quickly.

No. I’m not lying here replaying that conversation all morning, I whisper to myself as i swing my legs off the bed and stand, running a hand through my hair as I walk toward the bathroo.

Cold water hits my face in the sink and I grip the edges of the marble counter, breathing out slowly. I glare at my reflection.

"Stop it," I mutter to myself.

The girl staring back at me looks just as stubborn as I feel.

Good. I straighten up, today I’m getting answers. One way or another.

I brush my teeth quickly, tie my hair back, and head back into the bedroom to get dressed. I don’t spend long thinking about it. Just something simple...black jeans, a loose long-sleeve shirt, sneakers. Something practical

If I’m going to face my brothers about something like this, I’d rather not look like I just rolled out of bed.

Once I’m done, I take one last glance around the room.

Zane’s side of the bed is empty but sheets are slightly wrinkled though so it means he slept here. I remember feeling the mattress dip sometime in the middle of the night. I didn’t open my eyes then, but I knew it was him.

I don’t know when he left.... Probably early, that has become like his style.

I shake the thought off and head for the door.

The hallway outside is quiet. One of the guards nods when I pass him. I nod back, trying not to think about the fact that they’re technically here to make sure I don’t just walk out whenever I want. Not that it matters, I’m leaving the house today anyway.

The smell of coffee drifts down the hall as I reach the stairs and my stomach growls slightly.

Okay..... maybe I’ll have breakfast first. Then the confrontation.

I head toward the dining room, already running through how I’m going to approach the conversation with my brothers. Accusation? Question? Casual "hey did you fund a murder attempt on my husband"?

Yeah.... Dtill working on that part.

I push the dining room door open and im immediately stop when I spot aaron sitting at the table. He’s already dressed in his usual black tactical clothes, leaning back slightly in his chair like he’s been waiting for a while.

But he’s not alone today, there’s another man is sitting across from him. He’s a little bigger than Aaron. Broad shoulders, dark hair, a trimmed beard that makes him look like he belongs on the cover of some "dangerous men with guns" magazine.

Both of them look up when I walk in.

"Morning." Aaron greets mw first.

I blink at them.

"...Morning."

My eyes move between them then focus on Aaron.

"Why do you look like you’re about to go to war?"

Aaron’s mouth twitches slightly.

"Preparation."

"For what?"

He gestures toward the chair across from him.

"Sit."

That immediately makes me suspicious.

"You’re being weird."

"Sit."

I narrow my eyes but walk over anyway, pulling out the chair and dropping into it.

Martha appears from the kitchen a second later like she’s been expecting me.

"Good morning, dear," she says warmly.

"Morning."

She places a plate in front of me...eggs, toast, fruit.....and sets a cup of coffee beside it. God bless hrr for the coffee.

Normally I’d take my time.

Today? Not happening.

I grab the fork almost immediately.

"Okay," I say between bites. "What’s going on?"

Aaron leans his elbows on the table.

"Zane gave instructions this morning."

My fork pauses halfway to my mouth.

"...Instructions."

"Yes."

My eyes narrow slightly.

"What kind of instructions."

Aaron glances briefly at the man beside him.

"This is Marcus," he says. "He’s part of the security team."

Marcus gives me a short nod.

"Ma’am."

I nod back slowly, still confused.

"Hi... Marcus." Marcus.... Marcus I rethink the name in my head wondering how he looks so familiar then it hits me. He’s the man I handed mt sister over to when I first met Zane at the club.

Mhm.... I turn my attention back at Aaron.

"You didn’t answer my question."

Aaron exhales quietly.

"Zane told me to take you to your brothers’ house today."

The fork drops from my hand and clatters softly against the plate.

"What?"

Aaron doesn’t repeat himself so I just stare at him.

"You’re joking."

"No."

"You’re lying."

"I’m not."

My brain takes a second to catch up

"You mean..."

"Yes."

"You’re actually taking me there?"

"Yes."

I look between him and Marcus again.

"And the extra security?" I ask. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Aaron nods toward Marcus.

"And two more vehicles behind us."

My mouth falls open slightly.

"Wait."

I lean forward.

"You’re serious."

"Yes."

"Zane approved of this?"

Aaron nods once.

"He gave the order himself."

I sit back slowly in my chair.

Okay.

That... was not the reaction I expected when I woke up this morning.
