Bought For A Baby, Kept For A Lifetime-Chapter 84: Luck Ran Out
Anne ran to Doctor Steve, desperately asking for his help, but he merely sighed regretfully and told her there was nothing he could do since the couple were Kristen’s legal guardians.
"Anne, I’ve been looking all over for you. Some people came into Kristen’s room, they’re about to take him off life support. What about his surgery?" Jasmine raced to where Anne was outside Doctor Steve’s office.
Anne racked her brain for a solution but none came to mind. Helplessness became a thorn in her chest, and it was a familiar feeling she absolutely hated.
"Those people... they want to take Kristen away from me."
Her tears fell in torrents down her face.
"Who are you talking about?" Just as Jasmine asked this question, she sighted the familiar couple entering Doctor Steve’s office as they submitted some papers to him.
"Anne, your aunt and uncle... is this their doing?"
Anne couldn’t utter a reply, her pain too heavy in her chest.
She couldn’t stand to watch her brother die. It would kill her.
Raising her head, she caught the light smirk on her aunt’s face as they discussed hushly with the doctor.
The anger towards these people caused something destructive to well in her chest—so heavily destructive.
In the past, they’d hurt her and her brother, deprived them of what their father left them, but she hadn’t been able to fight back, powerless as she was.
Yes, the world was indeed cruel, and it would torture and break the most powerless people, drowning them away in bitterness if they had no branch to grab onto...
Something suddenly dawned on Anne.
People can only put you down, step on you because they’re more powerful, but if she had a special method to fight back...
"Anne, what do we do? They can’t take Kristen off life support, he’ll die!"
Anne’s eyes suddenly lit up as she said some words to Jasmine, then took off on her own.
"Where are you going?" Jasmine called after her, but she didn’t stop.
Jasmine went on to do as Anne requested of her. She dashed into the office to try to stall this couple just as Anne had requested.
A branch to grab onto... Anne thought as she stood outside in the cold, her nerves rising with every passing second.
She was drowning right now, and she would hold onto any branch, if it would save her brother, no matter how shameless it would make her appear.
Taking out her phone, Anne made a call.
Mark and Hannah both feigned tears as they went to look upon Kristen for one last time.
Such unexpected fortune landing right upon their doorstep—of course they could force out a tear or two.
Mark sighed, speaking to Doctor Steve who was next to him.
"That niece of mine has always been stubborn. She won’t let her brother go no matter what, but I know my nephew is only suffering. How can I continue to watch that?"
Doctor Steve sighed sadly.
"I informed her prior to this, but Miss Anne was insistent on the surgery. It was her call, and I didn’t want her to have any false hope."
"Please, doctor, make sure our nephew goes as painlessly as possible. Let him get his rest peacefully," Mark pleaded with tears shining in his eyes. He truly portrayed the role of a caring uncle.
"Of course, Mr. Thompson."
Doctor Steve had seen so many situations similar to this. And in almost every case, they ended up sadly losing the patient.
He understood Anne and knew it was difficult to consciously let go of a family member. Luckily, she had elders in the family who could be more rational.
It was best to be realistic and take the hard decision. In the end, she’ll find peace as time goes on. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Doctor Steve gave the instructions to his colleagues.
"Go ahead and get it done now."
The hospital staff moved to enter the ward and get it done. They witnessed tons of deaths every day, and this one wouldn’t be any different.
Mark and Hannah shared a triumphant look beneath the fake tears they were shedding.
This was indeed their good luck—perhaps they had just amassed good fortunes from all their previous lifetimes.
Wealth seemed to always drop into the palm of their hands from heaven, and it always came from his brother’s children.
They truly were his key to success.
Good thing this came at the right time. That two million will be more than enough to pay off the debts he’d taken for his business about a year ago.
After paying back the debts, he would use the rest of the money to further grow his business and also improve his network.
His daughter was growing up beautifully each year. The next step would certainly be to invest in her so he would marry her into high society.
As those plans settled in Mark Thompson’s mind, he watched the doctors move into the ward, about to disconnect the very machines currently keeping his young nephew alive, when a loud authoritative voice suddenly interrupted the whole scenario.
"Stop! Who authorized this? Doctor Steve Johnson, how dare you carry out such an operation without authorization?"
When all gazes turned, they found a stern-looking middle-aged man. His gaze was sharp and strict.
Doctor Steve quickly lowered his head respectfully.
"Sir, this patient has been under my care. I merely did my job by recommending the best solution to his family members."
The man who just arrived was Frederick Lane, the Chief Managing Director of the hospital.
"Recommending the best solution, by killing off your patient?" the man bellowed.
"Sir, it’s not what you think. The patient’s family members all gave their consent for this. I only..."
"Hmph! A doctor whose focus is not solely on saving his patients’ lives but recommending to take them—how can you continue to call yourself a doctor? You are dismissed from this patient’s case. Bring your license to the hospital board and plead your case. Otherwise, drop your resignation immediately."
Doctor Steve’s eyes widened. He couldn’t believe he was being subjected to the board’s scrutiny for something this small.
"Sir, you can’t do this. I’ve done nothing wrong!" Doctor Steve defended himself.
"You should have thought about that before taking such a careless step." The man eyed the young doctor before yelling,
"Security!"
Uniformed men hurriedly ran to the spot.
Frederick Lane looked at the couple before him with evident disdain in his eyes.
Such average people, yet they dared to offend that person?
"Take these people out of here. They aren’t related in any way to the patient in this ward. Don’t you ever let them step a foot in this hospital again. Is that understood?"
"Yes, sir!"
Mark and Hannah were not even allowed to say a word as they were ruthlessly dragged away by security. It all happened so fast.
One moment they could see wealth dangling right before their eyes, and the next... it was gone!
Mark Thompson knew Frederick Lane. He was very famous and reputable, though not many had the honor of seeing his face, not to mention getting him to interfere in such a small case.
Right at that moment, Mark spotted Anne watching him with firmness in her light brown eyes.
This girl... how had she done it?
Not only did she raise that huge amount on her own, she’d actually managed to get Frederick Lane to interfere in her case.
Could this girl actually have a very powerful backer?
The couple could only struggle as they were dragged out by the bulky security guards.
