Chapter 27: Familiar

The contract stipulated: Party B will receive twenty percent of the incentives after the first step, which is mutual copulation between both parties. Another thirty percent when the copulation yields fruit, and the remaining fifty percent after childbirth.

It was the most unbelievable business transaction in existence, yet Anne was a party to it.

She sat in her cubicle within the office contemplating the next thing that would happen in her life. She’d never allowed herself to think this far before. Ever since she signed the contract, whenever such thoughts came to her mind, she always pushed them down with thoughts of Kristen looking healthy and back to the way he was again.

She recalled a scene she witnessed at the hospital, a mother holding her newborn child tenderly in her arms. That scene had stopped her, rooting her feet in the same spot with a sinking realization.

Someday, this would be her... but when that someday comes, she would have to drop her own child and turn her back on it.

That thought had caused her heart to tighten in pain.

Anne was suddenly dragged back to the present by a voice that interrupted her thoughts.

"You look lost, is everything alright?"

Anne raised her head to behold Clara’s gorgeous face masked with a curious concern. Pushing back her unease, she put a smile on her face and replied, "I’m fine, was just distracted for a moment."

Clara nodded and then handed her some documents.

"These need to be delivered to the Chairman’s office. Everyone else is caught up at the moment. I would have sent them myself but I’m pretty occupied too, can you please..."

"Of course, I’ll deliver the files to the Chairman’s office." Anne quickly took them out of her hands.

"I have a favor to ask, if you won’t mind, that is." Clara’s hand rested on Anne’s shoulder with a friendliness one wouldn’t find between an employee and her superior. The gesture caused many members of the department to turn their heads and stare at them.

"Sure, what favor?"

Anne still had a debt of gratitude towards Clara, hence she was ready to do anything to repay it.

"Since you’re going to the Chairman’s office, can you please pass by the cafeteria and get me coffee? I would have gone myself but..."

"Done, how do you like your coffee?" Anne hugged the documents to her chest, ready to leave.

"A latte, with a drizzle of cream and no sugar."

"Got it."

Just when Anne was about to leave, Clara stopped her once more. A look of awkward apology sitting on her beautiful face, "That’s not all," she said and went on to further instruct Anne on some things to pick up on the way.

It was her job, hence Anne didn’t find anything off with the instructions Clara had given her.

When Anne reached the Chairman’s office, she knocked politely until she was asked to come in.

Elder Sterling was sitting behind the desk, immersed in his work. When he raised his head to see who had come into his office, a look of pleasant surprise appeared on his face, replacing the stern lines of a constant frown that always sat on his face.

"Little Anne, it’s you," the man called pleasantly. "Quick, come take a seat." He ushered her onto the comfortable-looking couch at the side of his office instead of towards the desk seat.

The older man was beaming as if the sight of her had just made his day.

"I’ve been meaning to come down there to check on you, but I didn’t want to attract too much gossip to you, so I sent my brats to check on you. How’s your new job? Is it comfortable? If you have any complaints, you can always come to me and I’ll move you to a better department."

"Thank you very much for your concern, sir. I’m doing very well. And the department is really good too, my new job is quite fun and challenging enough that I enjoy it."

He laughed. "That’s great to hear." Though he would have preferred she addressed him as grandfather, he didn’t want to push the girl too much, so he just let her call him what she felt comfortable with.

"I was tasked to bring over these documents." Anne slid the files onto the glass table before rising with the intention to leave. "I’m still on working hours, so I can’t stay for too long, but I..."

She was in the middle of trying to excuse herself when the office doors were suddenly pushed open. She was shocked someone would do that at first, considering this was the Chairman’s office, but the shock faded away when she saw who it was.

"Hi Grandpa." Donald Sterling strode in casually like someone walking into their own home. When his gaze landed on Anne, he stopped short, a bit surprised to see her there. Then his eyes lit up and he pulled back the hoodie covering his head.

A head full of blonde hair cascaded down in tendrils over his face. He stood like a model ready for a magazine shoot.

When Donald registered the shock that came on Anne’s face upon seeing his hair, he smirked.

Now that was more like it. She was smitten, wasn’t she?

What could he say? He sighed internally. He had that effect on girls no matter who they were.

And she had dared to call him a kid to his face.

With this new hair of his, surely she must see that he looked more mature, right?

Donald trailed his fingers through his hair proudly and strode further into the room, deliberately sitting right opposite her on the couch so she could have her fill looking at him.

Elder Sterling, however, had a sour look on his face. "What have you done to your hair?"

"I’ve gone blonde, Grandpa. It’s the new style these days. Besides, I’m sure a certain someone likes it," he said, looking directly at Anne.

"I’ll be taking my leave now, sir." Anne said respectfully and immediately made to scurry out of the office before that kid would embarrass her in front of the Chairman by saying something weird to her again.

Donald was taken aback when she quickly fled the office and he immediately got on his feet with the aim to follow her. "I also have to leave now, Grandpa."

But before he could even flee, the old man called, "Sit. I have something important to discuss with you."

And just like that, he was stopped from following his target.

Anne hurried towards the elevator.

That young Sterling boy was a troublemaker, it was obvious by the glint in his eyes.

She definitely had to avoid him.

The moment the elevator doors opened, Anne suddenly halted just when she was about to step in.

A tall figure was standing alone inside the elevator, and his eyes met hers immediately the elevator doors opened.

His handsome face looked like it was carefully sculpted to perfection. Just standing there made him exude a majestic aura capable of repelling anyone around in fear of being frozen by his icy aura.

Andrew Sterling.

For some inexplicable reason, Anne felt her heart suddenly skip a beat the moment she looked into his dark eyes.

Those eyes...

Why did they feel so familiar?
