Bought For A Baby, Kept For A Lifetime-Chapter 168: Daughter In Law Or A Stranger
"I said, get her out." Jennifer said these words in a tone that almost sounded like a growl. She never did well with situations where she didn’t get what she wanted, just like earlier when her husband had instructed her to go find his son’s new wife and try to get along with her as she seemed to be the ticket for them to get close to his second son who was the hardest to get along with.
The maids had been following Jennifer around on her husband’s instructions because he wanted her to feel like a queen in this gigantic estate that looked like a mansion, but Jennifer never thought that the moment she arrived at the entrance of the parlor room, she would hear these two women instigating the girl supposed to be her daughter in law to fight against her.
Before coming here, Micheal Sterling had already told her about all the enticing benefits she would get as the mistress of the family, Jennifer couldn’t wait to experience that, so on getting here and finding out there was competition, she naturally wanted to put a firm foot down and perhaps through that, the girl would grow afraid of her and back down from the position. Hence Jennifer decided to show a ruthless side of her by teaching one of the women a lesson.
Knowing she could do whatever she wanted, she ordered the woman to be tossed out after all, she wasn’t truly a member of the Sterling family, but she didn’t expect the girl who claimed she didn’t want the position to actually counter her orders.
Was she pretending? And why were the maids listening to the girl more than her?
"Who are you to stop them from doing as I said? You’re just a younger daughter in law of this family and by position I have more say than you do." Jennifer spoke while staring down at Anne with a strict face, "It’ll be in your best interest not to disobey me if you want me to treat you like a daughter and family rather than a stranger. And trust me you don’t want me to see you as a stranger, you’ll be ending up following her out of this house."
The woman was already speaking with so much authority, one would think she’d been living at the estate for years rather than the very day she arrived.
"I’m not trying to upset you, I just think that...throwing her out is too much. Grandfather sees the second family branch as the Sterling’s true family members and he probably won’t like it if he finds out about this."
Anne had been told that the second branch were related to elder Sterling’s wife, and also about how he never toyed with anything that had to do with his wife. The old man cherished her memories preciously hence he took her family as part of her memories he cherished, that was why the second branch family could do as they absolutely pleased and elder Sterling would have their back.
Hearing Anne’s words, Jennifer went still momentarily. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
The truth of the matter was that her husband had indeed told her she would be treated like a queen at the estate, but he’d also warned her that no matter what she did, she wasn’t supposed to upset his father.
The girl was right, she couldn’t afford to offend the old man when she’d only just arrived.
Jennifer began to second guess her actions but didn’t want to make it seem like she was giving in out of fear, so she cast a disdainful look in Elara’s direction, confidently walking up to her before leaving a warning in her face.
"Try to stay out of my way from now on, or else when I come for you, you definitely won’t see it coming." She sent Anne a sharp gaze knowing deep in her heart that there was an obstacle for her in ruling this house the way she’d envisioned to, and that obstacle was Anne.
If Anne had chosen to be quiet and meek and agreed with her, maybe she would have liked the girl, but in this situation...the battle lines were drawn.
Her heels clanked as Jennifer exited the room with a sound of annoyance to her steps completely forgetting what her husband had sent her here to do in the first place, she no longer had any desire to get along with Anne at all as she began to view the younger woman as a rival.
Elara let out a sigh in relief, despite her arrogance, she knew it when someone else was more powerful than her. The woman now realized that this new addition to the Sterling family was someone she didn’t want to cross ever again.
After the weird situation, the two women from the second family branch politely left the estate no longer wanting to get into more trouble.
Anne found herself waiting at the estate for hours as one of the butlers had informed her that Andrew had left a while ago and would most likely be coming back to pick her up.
Anne had known that it was most likely not to happen, earlier he’d said things to her that made the line in whatever their relationship was extremely clear. He wouldn’t be coming back to pick her up.
Since the family breakfast had been over a while ago, Anne had also meant to leave the estate, however elder Sterling had sent one of the servants to call for her.
She was led towards an elevator that took her to a secluded part of the estate.
Though the hallways had the same crisply pristine design that the whole house had, it still was evident that many didn’t frequent this part of the estate due to the sharp echo of their footsteps as she followed the maid through a hallway.
Anne felt very wary due to what had happened to her once before. In her small clutch bag she’d kept a discreet bottle of pepper spray and little pocket knife as a form of protection for herself.
After what happened to her once at the Sterling estate anniversary event, Anne had decided to take even more caution in protecting herself.
Most of her life she’d been a victim, she wanted to break that streak. So if someone meant to harm her, she wouldn’t hesitate to harm them back, if someone meant to hurt her, she wouldn’t hesitate to hurt them back, but if someone meant her good, she would do all she could to be good to them as well.
The maids stopped outside the door to a room, this specific door was different from all the other doors in the estate as it looked worn by time.
"Old master is waiting for you inside." The maid said but Anne hesitated to enter until she heard the older man call from inside.
"Is that you Annelise, come right in."
Hearing the man’s voice, Anne instinctively relaxed.
The maid pushed the door opened and when Anne stepped in, what she saw inside astonished her.
