Chapter 110: Rumor

Immediately Anne entered the company, all the hairs at the back of her neck stood on end. She could feel a pair of eyes from behind watching her and when she stopped to turn and have a look, she found two unfamiliar guys looking in her direction, their lips moving in conversation but she couldn’t make out what they were saying.

Despite the fact that she was looking right at them, they didn’t look away or show any guilt at being caught staring, instead they continued to do so unabashedly which made Anne frown subtly before turning away to head for the elevator.

The elevator dinged open and several employees were already inside, but the weird thing that happened was; the moment they all saw her, their eyes widened as if they’d seen a ghost, then one after the other everyone began to file out of the elevator.

Anne wondered if everyone was going to this particular floor for them to empty the elevator at once, and no one had made any intentions to leave until she arrived.

"Must be nice to have a wealthy man to cater to one’s every needs. Women are so lucky, they always have a shortcut, if I had someone to pave ways for me, I’d go on to become a model too." A cute looking guy with round glasses on his face spoke to a couple of girls as they all exited the elevator.

"Not everyone is shameless enough to use their body to pave a path for themselves, if everyone can be that shameless, we’d all be supermodels by now, she isn’t the only pretty girl in the world." One of the girls replied.

The group laughed among each other, the sound fading away as Anne entered the elevator.

She didn’t think too much about that conversation because it had nothing to do with her, perhaps they were gossiping about someone in their department.

It’s weird how some people think they can just gossip about people judging their character as if they were the lord’s of good morals on earth. Everyone has done something wrong at some point in their lives but when it comes to judging other people, everyone forgets their own wrongs and hate on others for making mistakes.

Sighing to herself, Anne pressed the floor on the elevator.

At some point the elevator opened on one floor with several people waiting to enter but once the doors slid open and people saw her inside, they would scramble away without hesitating at all leaving Anne stunned until the elevator doors closed on its own again.

Anne frowned.

Why did she have the feeling that these people didn’t want to get into the elevator with her?

But why would they do that when they didn’t even know who she was? It was unlikely they refused to enter the elevator because of her, she shouldn’t overthink it.

For some reason, it suddenly reminded her of what happened to her at the event. The employees at the company couldn’t have something to do with it right?

Why would employees she didn’t know personally want to hurt her? No matter how she thought about it, it didn’t make any sense so she dismissed the thought, however Andrew Sterling’s thoughts replaced that spot in her mind.

When she woke up yesterday morning, finding herself in his room again, she realized he still wasn’t anywhere around. He hadn’t returned to his own room ever since he brought here there.

She couldn’t help but feel strange about it.

He had saved her, but didn’t wait for her to wake up and left then didn’t come back at all.

Anne left the Sterling estate very early that morning since Andrew hadn’t returned, perhaps he truly wasn’t comfortable with having her in his space after all. So she had left even without seeing him.

Truth was, she told herself she lingered because she wanted to thank him, but in reality maybe she’d just wanted to see him and she’d felt disappointed that she hadn’t.

Anne tried to shake off the thought, but the elevator doors opened at another floor, again the same thing happened. The people waiting to enter, rushed away in different directions the moment they saw it was her in the elevator.

This was really getting weird.

Were people avoiding her?

Why?

The doors opened when she finally reached her floor, she stepped out and went in the direction of the PR department, while she was walking ahead she turned around for a while only to see people rush into the elevator she had just come out from.

People were really avoiding her, and she had a strong feeling it had something to do with what happened at the event.

If the nagging feeling she was having inside wasn’t wrong, the person who’d wanted to harm her was in this company with her. And if that person truly was here, they would try to attack her again.

Thinking about that, Anne couldn’t help but remember a sentence the giant tornado had once said to her.

It was at the time he’d punished her by making her clean many floors, back then she’d told him that he shouldn’t be hung up on his power, and he’d said something like,

"People like you will always remain in the same spot for the rest of their lives."

Right now, Anne couldn’t help but think that he wasn’t entirely wrong.

People like her worked with emotions, she was kind to others because it was the right thing to do, but it seemed being too kind attracted enemies. And the type of enemy who would want to hurt her enough that she would see her life flashing before her eyes shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Anne proceeded into the department, hoping to get every pending work done before the official ad they’d shot for the new product launch would be released in a few hours, however just like everywhere she’d been this morning, all eyes turned to her the minute she entered the office.

"Well, look who decided to show up early. I was beginning to think that since you not only gained a sugar daddy but also have the Sterling sons looking at you, you might have become arrogant and refuse to come to work." Rebecca began with an unmistakable air of disdain in her voice.

Hearing what Rebecca said, something seemed to click in Anne’s mind.

All the company employees had been talking about someone getting a shortcut from a sugar daddy. And they all had been avoiding her like a plague.

So all that gossip in the whole company had been about her?

Anne heard someone chuckle somewhere in the office.

"Personally, I don’t think she’s that pretty. I mean even Gabriel Sterling wanted to spend time with her at the party, there must have been something to it." Kendra was the one who spoke this time.

It was infuriating how she was right in front of them, yet they were speaking so openly about her in this manner.

"What are you all talking about? Were you the ones spreading gossip about me all over the company?"

At Anne’s question, the gang of employees exchanged glances and laughed.

"What makes you think we’d all waste our times spreading gossip about you? Yesterday’s event was a banger and since we handled it, we’ll be getting rewards for our hard work, now with something so enticing, would we bother to go around telling people the obvious? Naturally people have eyes, and they can spot a scheming little gold digger from a mile away." Rebecca’s ridiculing tone echoed around.

Anne’s gaze turned cold, "Mind your words Rebecca, you’re accusing me to my face. You know nothing about me, what gives you the right to decide who I am?"

The sudden sharpness of her gaze and the chill in her voice made the group momentarily silent, before they recovered immediately and Jessica chimed in.

"See how her tone changed? She’s already riding on a high horse even though she’s still a nobody. Delusions aren’t reality so stop acting like someone who has ascended to heaven all because of some man.

Just looking at you disgusts me, you call yourself a woman but sleep your way into a billboard for money and fame." Rebecca grounded out bitterly.

The more she looked at Anne right now, the more something burned in her chest.

When she’d seen that billboard on High square the previous day she’d almost sank to her knees. It should have been her sent to that shoot that day. They had clearly both been assigned the same work, If she’d gone there that day it should have been her own face in that ad.

Anne had had enough of the strange interrogation.

So someone was spreading rumors about her, looking at Rebecca’s face Anne tried to find out if the person who had her locked in a cold room the other day could be her but it was unlikely.

What she could see in Rebecca’s eyes right now was petty jealousy, not enough hatred to fuel her to do something like that to her. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

If that person was anywhere around her, Anne knew it was only a matter of time before she would see through them.

Looking squarely into their eyes one after the other, a sarcastic smirk pulled up Anne’s lips.

"So what if I have a man backing me up, what are you all going to do about it?"

They were all taken aback by the strange reply she gave.

Shouldn’t she be crying and trying to prove her innocence to them?
