Chapter 20: Weekend (Part 1)

The weekend had come, and Quinn slept in that morning. There was no school today, and he planned on getting every wink of sleep he could get. When waking up from the glaring sun’s rays through the window, he noticed that he had gotten a few notifications during the night.

[Erin has gained 5+ EXP for drinking 2 liters of water]

[125/200 EXP]

[Erin has gained 5+ EXP for avoiding sunlight for 8 hours]

[130/200 EXP]

Blinking himself awake, he was trying to get himself fully conscious.

Examining the notifications in his messages, he was considering going a little easier on her, and easing her into the whole situation about the discrimination low levels faced. What surprised him, however, was that Erin made the first move.

{Erin} Quinn.

{Erin} I noticed your glasses were broken.

{Erin} When you wake up, I’m getting you to get another pair.

{Erin} You can’t exactly fight off your opponents if you can’t see.

Quinn sat up more upright in bed, and looked around for Peter. He seemed to be fast asleep, learning about the earth ability must’ve taken a lot out of him. Strangely, Fex was nowhere to be seen.

As Quinn got changed into his school uniform since he didn’t have very many clothes, he noticed Peter sleepily waking up, sitting upright in his bed but eyes still closed.

"Morning," Quinn said, "Want me to get us breakfast?"

Peter groggily looked in the direction of his roommates voice, slowly nodding his head before dropping back down into his pillow.

Quinn chuckled a little at the sight before getting himself ready to go out.

He was a little worried for Peter, but given that it was the weekend, and the bullying usually lightens up at this point, Quinn thought it was fine to leave him alone.

{Quinn} I’m up.

{Quinn} But I’ll be stopping by the convenience store first.

{Erin} Good, we can meet up there.

[Erin is being hit by direct sunlight. All stats will be halved]

"She’s outside so quickly?" he whispered to himself, as he left his dorm room.

Erin was wearing a long white floral dress along with a large sunhat. This was one of her casual outfits that she hoped would provide two benefits to her. She was thinking that with her hat giving her shade, she’d be able to avoid the sun, but she was still sweating buckets. Thankfully, her dress was very light and allowed for air flow, which helped cool her down. Erin was going to need to test out the limits of her sun weakness soon, and potentially ask if that sniffing teenager had some sort of solution to this.

She stood outside of the nearest convenience store, looking around for Quinn. She had to remind herself that since he was a weak human, and didn’t have the resources to train himself, that it’d only make sense that she’d have to wait for him.

Erin wasn’t the only kid outside the convenience store, as a few students would also visit to grab snacks. Hiding from the other students, she had her hands held behind her back to cover her watch. Just in case they were true, she was taking Quinn’s words seriously.

"Holy crap, is that THE ice queen?" A kid spoke to his friend a distance away, "She’s even prettier in person!"

"Why do we call her the ice queen anyways? If anything, she should be called the ’Medusa’ with her stoney stare," His friend replied.

Twisting her head in that direction, Erin glared them down, which caused the two to freeze up in fear before running off from her sight.

Getting annoyed by the sun sweating her down, Erin decided to enter the store. When training, she’d rather have food brought to her, meaning that she actually didn’t go to corner stores like these very often.

[You are no longer being affected by sunlight]

[All stats have returned to normal]

Erin let out a sigh of relief as she was finally able to relax. As she looked through the aisles, she grabbed a few snacks that she liked, and purchased them. As she left the convenience store, sticking to the shade, she took a bite out of a chocolate bar. Chewing on it, and swallowing, she wondered if she just had a bad batch due to the fact that it was very plain. Grabbing another snack, a twinkie, she ate it only to get the same flavor of eating flavorless mush.

’Are you kidding me?’ Erin thought.

Why was her food suddenly tasting so bland now? The only reason she could think of was that it was related to her going from human to halfling. Didn’t her roommate mention something about how vampires couldn’t eat normal food?

If the cost of being able to grow stronger was no longer being able to taste food like normal, then Erin was just going to have to be fine with it. She would continue to eat her snacks, just slower due to the lack of flavor. It still helped with hunger in a small way.

In the distance, she spotted Quinn running over, but he seemed to be frantically looking around, struggling to find someone.

"Erin!" Quinn called out.

"Over here," Erin casually waved her arms, which caught Quinn’s attention.

He followed her voice, and the two stood in front of each other. Quinn was squinting looking at the girl in front of him.

"You’re Erin, right?" Quinn asked, just to be sure.

"Of course I am, idi—" Erin paused her insult, and cleared her throat, "...Well, like I said earlier, I’m getting you another pair of glasses."

Quinn didn’t look too amused with Erin’s almost-insult, but he did promise to get Peter breakfast first before going off with her.

They entered the convenience store together, and Quinn got some easy to make microwavable meals for himself and Peter. Right as they were about to check out, Erin took out her watch, ready to pay for the food, which Quinn politely pushed away.

"Don’t worry, I can pay for this myself," Quinn told Erin, as he bought the goods.

Even though Erin was strangely willing to help him today, he didn’t want to be in debt to her after she was already getting him new glasses. They only knew each other for 3 days, and he knew glasses weren’t cheap.

Once they were done, they dropped by the boy’s dorm room again, and Quinn entered inside to talk to Peter.

He only just got done with brushing his teeth, which was good timing for Quinn to microwave some of the packaged food. When the microwave beeped, indicating it was done, Peter began digging in with a plastic fork.

"Aren’t you going to stay and eat?" Peter asked after he gulped down a bite.

"No, I got plans," Quinn replied, "While I’m here, promise me you’re not going to get into trouble?"

Peter seemed a little off put by that question, but he knew what Quinn meant.

"Don’t worry about me Quinn, I’m fine."

Quinn wanted to say more, but he didn’t want to keep Erin waiting.

"Seriously, Quinn, I’ll be fine," Peter said.

Quinn sighed, but he was just going to have to take Peter’s word for it. Grabbing his plastic bowl of microwaved spaghetti, he left the dorm room, and met Erin outside the door.

The reason why Quinn had been worried about Peter was the fact that he was alone. Ever since Quinn had come to the school, there was an unspoken rule between him and Peter where they would travel in pairs or in groups due to the fact that they were less likely to be attacked that way. They didn’t do this all the time though, and sometimes it was just faster to go somewhere alone.

They left the school for the local eye doctor, and Quinn ate as he walked. Since Erin was in sunlight, she was slower, it allowed Quinn to keep up with her.

Inside the eye clinic was a brightly well lit room, and had walls and walls of different glasses, all in different shapes and sizes. Due to the fact that it had been years since Quinn last checked his prescription, it expired. Thankfully, the eye doctor was no longer on leave, and began to check out his eyes.

While Quinn was having his eyes checked out, elsewhere in the military staff room, a bulky man was examining something on his computer...
