(BL) Mafia Love; He who falls the hardest loses-Chapter 161: Believe me
He glanced at the clock on the watch and it was almost midnight. He rubbed his palms together and rose up, it was never too late. He went to the closet to change from his pyjamas into a comfortable shirt and tailored pants.
He grabbed his car key and phone and walked out the door, his legs moving fast as he held back from sprinting. It took even more self-control to drive below the speed limit.
He wanted to see Haruki. It has been so long, it felt too long. He was not locked up, he was busy and made himself even busier but he still missed Haruki.
Unlike usual, he was stopped at the gate, his car wasn’t let in. This has not happened to him before. They needed to confirm if he was allowed in or if Haruki had called him in.
Hiroshi looked at the digital clock in the car, hating the fact that all the rushing he had done was made futile by the guards. As much as he understood why they were doing it, it was difficult not to feel a bit displeased experiencing it.
"You can come in," one of the guards finally said. It has been almost thirty minutes since he arrived and the time spent wasting had cooled him down, he had begun wondering if it was a good idea for him to come, he was planning on leaving until the morning.
With a sigh of relief, he drove down the driveway towards the mansion. When he got into the building, he was met by Kiyoshi. The man was dressed in black pajamas looking half awake.
"What are you doing here?" Kiyoshi asked scanning Hiroshi. It was easy to note the hurry in Hiroshi’s movement which was strange considering how calm Hiroshi always was.
"I came to see your boss," he replied wondering why he was suddenly asked that.
"Why?" Kiyoshi asked noting a bit of suspicion. He was beginning to worry if he had made the wrong choice of inviting Hiroshi in. Was it safe?
"I just . . ." Hiroshi began. He massaged his brow hesitating before finally adding, "I just wanted to see him. I don’t want him to forget me." That was the fastest answer he could give.
Hiroshi endured Kiyoshi’s sceptical gaze until the man finally nodded and turned to leave after saying goodnight.
Hiroshi sighed. He was delayed at the gate and searched afterwards. It was more than they made him go through on the first day he arrived in this mansion.
With hesitant hands, he pushed open the door of Haruki’s room and stepped in. The room was dark and silent.
"Don’t move," a cold voice came close to his ears as a cold metal was pressed against the back of his neck.
Hiroshi froze instinctively. That was the command of someone who won’t hesitate to pull the trigger if need be. This was the first time he heard Haruki speak so coldly. There was cold killing intent in his voice it felt icier than the metal pressed against his neck.
"Who are you?" Haruki asked, threateningly.
"It’s me, Hiroshi," Hiroshi hurriedly responded.
"What are you doing here?" Haruki asked surprised.
The metal moved but feeling the tension, Hiroshi still couldn’t move, he could sense the scepticism in Haruki’s voice. "I came to warn you about what I saw," Hiroshi replied firmly.
He heard Haruki take a step back before the lights in the room turned on. Hiroshi turned to look at Haruki who was in his pajamas but his eyes shone cautiously.
"I am sorry I came without calling first but I had to come see you myself," he apologised as Haruki continued towards the sitting area without putting the gun away.
Haruki sat down and gestured to the sofa opposite him. "Sit," he said calmly watching Hiroshi’s every move.
Hiroshi felt like he could sense the suspicion from Haruki and it hurt him. He had obeyed Haruki when he told him to leave. He had stayed away waiting to be called but this time, he just couldn’t hold back anymore.
"There’s so much at stake that’s why I came this late," Hiroshi said as he sat down. He rested his hands on his knees making them as visible as possible to Haruki.
"Oh, really?" Haruki asked placing the gun on the armrest as he relaxed against the backrest.
Hiroshi held his breath realizing what he was about to do and the weight it held. His hands trembled and he held back that itchy need to shake his legs. This was very risky, it will be over if Haruki doesn’t believe him and begins to distrust him.
"I know why you kept me away from you," Hiroshi broke the heavy silence that followed the question Haruki asked. "I know I am not supposed to be curious. I was supposed to trust you but I couldn’t help worrying about you."
Even with his explanations that followed, Haruki simply looked at him calmly and waited for him to continue as though asking him to say what he came to say.
"Ren is working with Aiichiro," Hiroshi unable to endure anymore blurted out.
He hated the position he was in. The man he loved had pressed his gun against him and even when he placed his gun down, he was still watching him calculatingly.
It hasn’t been two weeks since that morning, and it felt as though they have become strangers. No, he hated this even more than being a stranger.
"How do you know?" Haruki asked watching the man whose hands wouldn’t stop trembling. The always calm doctor had completely lost his cool.
"I had my lawyer investigate. I paid a few million to an international information organisation," Hiroshi replied.
Few millions? Haruki could almost immediately guess which organisation Hiroshi had paid to investigate. They were a group of secret agents working in intelligence bureaus of different countries who came together secretly on the dark web to sell information to anyone willing to pay enough.
Haruki had never really needed their service directly since he always had a good network but it was not inevitable that Ren might have contacted them a few times for some serious information especially with the last few breaches in their security.
"There is no way you would have found out about it because Ren is in charge of your underworld network," Hiroshi moved forward in his seat but he seemed to be careful with his movements as he kept his hands on his knees.
Haruki felt the urge to scoff. He could not imagine when his relationship with Hiroshi had changed. The man spent millions to investigate Aiichiro and came running to him with the information.
"Aren’t you scared?" Haruki asked. Hiroshi raised his head and met Haruki’s gaze as though he could not understand why Haruki had asked that after what he just said. "Aren’t you scared for your life with what you just said?"
"I am not scared," Hiroshi finally answered hastily after Haruki repeated his question. "I found out what they did and I had to tell you."
"First snooping around my business, second entering my house when I cleared sent you away . . ." Haruki began. The stress of the past week had been too much.
Even if his aunt’s family hadn’t taken into serious note the connection of her death to him, his grandaunt’s children who had been part of this world for long could see the pattern.
No one boldly confronted him during her funeral but he could feel their gazes and could almost read their thoughts through their stiffened expression.
Even if they didn’t ask, he had to provide them with an answer. All that had weighed heavily on him was remembering the deal he had with Aiichiro. He was going to get engaged but could he trust the man to kill his spies?
The feeling that he could trust no one was even more overwhelming, he had lived all his life with the right support, which was the only reason he was as successful and to live each day suspicious of those around him was torturous.
The moment the doctor had walked into his room, he came to the conclusion that perhaps he really brought the wrong people close to himself. He took in deep breaths, could he trust Hiroshi’s words?
"Third, claiming my mentor betrayed me, must take a lot of guts," Haruki continued as he watched Hiroshi fidget with every word he said.
"You . . . you have to believe me," Hiroshi replied firmly as he moved farther from the backrest of the sofa. "I have pictures of them together."
"I’ll see the pictures first," Haruki replied tapping his fingers on the armrest of his sofa. "But that won’t guarantee that I believe you."
"Fine but please take your time to read through the report," Hiroshi said as he moved his hands slowly from his knees to get his phone.
He tapped on the screen for a few seconds before pushing it towards Haruki. "I will read it first," Haruki replied calmly as he took the phone from the doctor.
