Chapter 573: Side story 3

Andrew was sitting, finally relaxing in the room while he waited for Maxwell to call for him once he was done in the bathroom.

He was on his phone, scrolling while he looked for a distraction from his thoughts, planning to top off Maxwell’s orange juice cup once he was out.

"Andy?" Andrew’s hair stood on end as soon as he heard Maxwell’s voice. That wasn’t a normal call. He stood immediately, shoving his phone into his pocket. It was one of the few moments where Andrew and Maxwell didn’t have someone else in the room with them.

Andrew rushed to the bathroom, hesitating for only a second before he pushed open the door. Maxwell was sitting on the toilet, his eyes wide, and Andrew realised pretty quickly what was going on.

"Angel, did your water break?" Andrew asked, noticing that there was a small pool of water around the toilet. Maxwell’s face was a little paler than normal, his eyes big and terrified and Andrew reached for him, taking Maxwell’s shaking hand in his.

"I’m not peeing." Maxwell admitted and Andrew gulped.

"It’s okay, my love. This is...normal. Let me just go let someone else know, okay? I’ll be right back." Andrew knew that he was freaking the fuck out, but he also knew that Maxwell did not need that from him right now. Maxwell was panicking.

He rarely panicked, but who the hell wouldn’t when something was pouring out of you that you had no control over? Yeah, if Andrew was panicking, Maxwell had every right to panic.

Maxwell’s grip on Andrew’s hand tightened, and that did something to Andrew’s heart. He didn’t want Andrew to leave, but there was no one else in the room right now.

"Can you stay for a little longer?" Maxwell asked and Andrew couldn’t find himself. He rooted himself to the ground closer to Maxwell, taking both of Maxwell’s hands in his own. Maxwell took a shaky breath, his legs shaking slightly and Andrew squeezed his hands.

"Of course I can." Andrew told him lowly, his whole heart in his words. Maxwell’s eye twitched, his lips shaky and Andrew could feel his pheromones leaving his body. He was scared, and god, that did something to Andrew’s insides. "Let me grab my phone. I can message your Mom and let her know. She’s just downstairs grabbing lunch with your Dad." Andrew told him carefully and Maxwell, all big eyes and fear, let go of one of Andrew’s hands.

Andrew reached for his phone, pulling it out and he didn’t text, he called. Thankfully, Luis was pretty high up in his contacts since he didn’t call people often.

She answered on the second ring.

"Andy? What’s wrong? Is Max already out of his orange juice?" Andrew appreciated that her first reaction wasn’t one of panic. She didn’t even consider that something could have happened to him.

"Max’s water broke and I’m unable to leave his side. Can you let Will or someone know?" Andrew spoke calmly, or as calmly as he could into the phone. Andrew heard the sound of chairs scraping against the floor.

"O-Oh. Alright. We’ll be right up. Tom can’t spend too much time since, you know, he’s replacing Maxy right now, but we’ll be there shortly." Andrew had no doubt that they both would. Andrew shoved the phone back into his pocket, taking Maxwell’s other hand in his own.

"You heard that, right? Both of them are going to be here soon. They’re going to be notified that your water broke and everything is going to be fine." Andrew told him, not knowing if Maxwell needed to hear this, but Andrew did.

Maxwell nodded, gulping, and slowly the sound of liquid leaving Maxwell came to a halt. By the time that Andrew was wondering if he should move Maxwell from the bathroom, Andrew could hear voices from the other room. Then Luis tentatively poked her head into the bathroom, a nurse behind her.

"Maxy, baby, are you alright? Can we come in?" Luis asked and Andrew shuffled back slightly so that both women could see Maxwell, but he didn’t leave his side or take his hands away. This was Maxwell’s decision, not his.

Maxwell gave a nod, his eyes still giant, and both women didn’t hesitate.

"How recently did the sound stop?" The nurse asked Andrew, and Andrew rattled off an answer, his professional mode kicking in even as he watched Luis stroke her son’s face. Andrew was thankful for the nurse who helped soothe everyone.

Shortly after, Andrew was by Maxwell’s side as the doctor checked to see if Maxwell was dilated. Maxwell was gripping onto Andrew’s hand, Luis and Tom on the other side. Everyone was anxious, and when the Doctor pulled back, she had a rather serious expression.

"We’ll have to push up the C-section. Get it ready." She told the nearby nurse. Andrew sucked in, going immediately into panic mode. Instead of letting any of it leak out, he turned to Maxwell, pressing a kiss against his forehead.

"They didn’t want to wait." Andrew joked, trying to break some of the tension in Maxwell’s body. For all of the big talk that Maxwell had spewed, he had to be scared too. Andrew had just let him stroke Andrew down from the edge, but now it was his turn to repeat it in kind.

Luis let out a soft, humour-filled noise.

"Sounds like something Max would do." She commented, her skin pale but her eyes warm. That was when a soft knock sounded at the door and everyone turned. Michael entered the room, his clothes a little askew, but his grin huge.

"Thank goodness I was nearby. I got here in time." Michael said warmly. "I’ll be helping with the birth, so you’ll be in good hands." Michael told them. Andrew, despite everything and how much he trusted the other doctor’s, felt his shoulders drop in relief.

"You help people give birth?" Maxwell asked incredulously. Michael laughed.

"Of course! Well, I’ve also been branching out and learning more recently. Andrew going back to school gave me crazy ideas." Michael teased. He smiled down at Maxwell, before turning his gaze to Andrew. "Plus, if I’m already a specialist in alphas, I was bound to show interest in omegas as well." Michael said warmly. "I’ll see you in there, Maxy. No matter what, we’ve got you." He promised before rushing out of the room. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

From that moment on, it felt like everything moved rather quickly. Andrew stayed by Maxwell’s side as long as he could before he trailed behind his bed, following him to the next room. It was on the same level, something that Will had wanted for the maternity ward since it made things easier in such an urgent environment.

Of course, that only worked in situations like Maxwell’s. Andrew wasn’t a fool and knew that in most cases, this would be performed in the room that they had been placed in. The babies were giving Maxwell just enough time to get to the room he was supposed to deliver in. How kind of them.

Andrew had to wait while the team in charge of Maxwell got everything ready. They waited until the last minute to give Maxwell the anesthetic and then it was go time.

Maxwell held Andrew’s hand like a life line, both men staring at the blue cloth that covered their view of Maxwell’s lower half. Maxwell winced at one point and Andrew felt his pheromones slither out, wanting to punish those who did that to him.

Andrew managed to control himself, even as a few of the more sensitive members of the team gave him wary looks. He swallowed thickly, keeping his attention on his omega.

If he looked over that curtain, Andrew wasn’t sure what he was going to do.

"Everything is going smoothly, you two. You’re doing great, Maxy." Michael’s voice was a balm in this situation. Maxwell’s labored breaths, his painful grip told Andrew that he needed that assurance. That was something he could focus on.

Andrew bent, pressing his lips against Maxwell’s damp forehead, not caring about something so trivial.

"You’re doing great, Daddy. Just a little bit longer. Hold out just a little bit longer, okay?" Andrew felt the man nod, his breaths still labored, his pheromones curling around Andrew, asking for support.

Then, there was rapid movement. Andrew knew what it meant and only a few seconds later, the piercing cries of two new members of the Beckett family filled the air. Andrew gasped, Maxwell’s breathing stuttered, and Michael’s head popped over the edge, a brilliant grin on his face.

"Congratulations, you two! Two healthy, hearty babies! Give me a few minutes to patch you up first, Maxy, and then you can hold them. Andy, come here and welcome your children into this world." Andrew hesitated, but Maxwell let go of his hands.

"Go." Maxwell whispered, and Andrew went. Andrew did his best not to look at the crime scene that was Maxwell’s lower half and instead focused on the two, mostly wiped off babies in the two nurses hands.

Michael already had their umbilical cords clamped so all Andrew had to do was cut them. He did and their children were whisked away again. Andrew was a little stunned, his heart racing in his chest as he turned back to Maxwell.

"Did they look okay?" Maxwell asked when Andrew came back and Andrew couldn’t stop the tears from spilling over.

"So healthy." Andrew whispered, pressing his face against Maxwell’s shoulder. "Very healthy." Maxwell raised his hand up shakily, patting the side of Andrew’s head.

It felt like eons later before two squirming little raisins were brought over, colour-coded blankets wrapped around them as they were gingerly placed on Maxwell’s chest. Maxwell, a man who normally didn’t cry much, began to cry.

"My babies." He whispered and Andrew thought he was going to fade away from the sweet, tender moment. Andrew helped Maxwell hold both of them, their sweet little angry faces scrunched up. They clearly did not want to be out in the world, and that only made Andrew laugh.

"Look at them. They’re angry that they’re out, but they are the ones who forced the issue." Andrew joked and Maxwell let out a wet laugh. His gaze hadn’t left them as soon as they had been placed in his arms, and when he finally looked up at Andrew, Andrew couldn’t help himself. He bent, kissing the man who had carried his children safely, who had made it out on the other side without any major complications thus far.

"I love you so much." Maxwell whispered when Andrew pulled back. Andrew swallowed the knot of tears that wanted to fall. "You gave me so much more than I ever thought I would get. Two children? A boy and a girl? What kind of karma did I do in a past life to get a life this good?" Maxwell asked and Andrew kissed him again.

"Don’t take the words from my mouth." Andrew accused and Maxwell let out another wet laugh. They were lost in their own moment, a bubble of happiness around the couple before the nurses had to take the babies back for their checkups.

Maxwell watched them like hawks and Andrew knew that he had no worries. Maxwell was going to be an amazing father. They were going to be amazing Fathers together.
