Chapter 307: A caring older brother

Who was he trying to contact?

Amir’s grandparents, of course. Specifically, his grandmother. They had told him to reach out, and now was the time. He wasn’t sure if he wanted something custom or something that he could customize. He had no idea. He’d never had to buy a ring before, he just wanted to get something that would make Maxwell happy.

It was also a quiet declaration of intent that he knew would get back to Maxwell’s parents. He didn’t think that Maxwell’s parents would be upset that Andrew and Maxwell were taking the next step. They were the ones who had been joking about when to hold the wedding, but Andrew was just nervous. Any man, hell, any person would be when the news of their intentions towards one of in-law’s kids became known.

That was all to say, Andrew had to reach out through Amir to get his grandparents’ contact since he wanted to make sure it was okay to contact them. Amir, knowing damn well what his grandparents did for a living was giddy when he called Andrew during lunch, harassing him about what he was doing, but in an excited way.

He asked Andrew a bunch of questions that Andrew wasn’t able to answer since he wasn’t going to risk looking up rings and that kind of stuff when he knew Maxwell could watch the security cameras and his computer screen faced the door. He wasn’t facing away like Dr. Piper and Richard’s desks were.

Amir didn’t care, and just sounded like he was excited to hear good news. Andrew then asked how the pregnancy was going and Amir, bless him, was trying his best not to gush. He said that it was hard, but they had gotten past the point of where they had lost the pregnancy so he was feeling a bit better. Andrew felt warm hearing that, and told him to reach out if he needed anything.

Andrew meant it, and he was sure that Maxwell would agree with his words as well. Amir was too precious of a person to be neglected, and this child meant so much to him and the rest of the Beckett family that he knew everyone would have his back.

He didn’t expect the Ben call shortly after he hung up with Amir, but he should have. Andrew had answered the phone, expecting it to be someone else but when he heard Ben’s voice on the other line he tensed.

Ben was cordial, calm, confident. Andrew worried that the man was going to tear him a new one for not...asking for Maxwell’s hand? He wasn’t sure if that was something rich families did, but he had a feeling that Andrew was doing something wrong and therefore, Ben was calling.

Instead, Ben didn’t talk about what Amir had spoken to him at all. He actually asked about Andrew’s feelings about buying a house with Maxwell, and about how Richard was doing. It was...a switch up, but Andrew didn’t drop his guard. Even though he appreciated the concern.

Andrew relayed everything that was going on with Richard since he was sure that Ben of all people was allowed to know everything. Andrew even told Ben about how he and Maxwell had pushed forward with getting a house to live in because they were worried about Richard.

Andrew didn’t actually consider it too much of a big move. Maxwell and Andrew had already had a huge fight, Maxwell had helped him through his manifestation, finding out that his Mom had lied to him, meeting his extended family, all of that. Getting a house together? That didn’t feel too big compared to everything else.

Plus, Andrew couldn’t even see him and Maxwell breaking up again. They were...if something came up like before Andrew knew that they were going to speak to each other about it instead of just shutting down on each other. They were better than that, and Andrew would do his best to fight his instincts to just leave. Maxwell was worth it, and Maxwell considered Andrew worth it too.

Ben was happy to listen to Andrew rant, excited about the future and how well everything was going. That was when Ben dropped a small bomb on Andrew.

"The government is doing an investigation into your former workplace." Andrew didn’t even know what to say to Ben’s words. Ben then continued to speak, giving Andrew the full rundown.

They, as a company, had finally moved forward through the proper channels to tear down the company. It had only taken this long because they had wanted to be absolutely sure of everything, and that their case was rock solid. Maxwell had, at first, wanted this to be a rush job, but as he had time to stew with Andrew back at his old house, he’d changed his mind.

Maxwell had wanted the whole world to know what they had lost, and through every legal channel possible, so, it had taken longer. They had submitted the papers and files to the appropriate channels a while ago and finally got news that they were going forward with the investigation. Ben only knew because he had connections to the department in question. freewebnoveℓ.com

Connections he’d made long before Andrew was in the company and his life, so he didn’t have to think he’d gone out of his way to do so.

Everyone was going to be looked into, and Ben warned Andrew that they might come asking for him to speak about his treatment. He told Andrew that he didn’t have to speak to them if he didn’t want to, they had a solid enough case. But if Andrew wanted to get some closure, this might be how he could do it without having to speak to them in person.

The kindness, the care that was in Ben’s voice. How he had waited, listening to Andrew ramble about how happy he was and how everything was going his way? How he wasn’t trying to pressure him into anything and just updating him on the situation at hand? Andrew wasn’t sure what to do with himself.

He hadn’t expected that Maxwell’s family would accept him to this extent. He felt emotional just experiencing it firsthand. If only his Mom could have known her in-laws and their children.

Andrew knew he was emotional and that probably meant that his pheromones were out of whack. Taking that into consideration, he headed for the storage room to compose himself. Ben waited on the other line, silent, but supportive all the same.

It took Andrew a few minutes to compose himself.

"Thank you, Ben." Andrew finally said. "Thank you for being so kind, and accepting of everything that happened to me, and allowing me into your family." Andrew felt choked up as he listened to the chair creak on Ben’s side as he leaned back.

"You have nothing to thank me for." Ben replied, his voice also tight. "There is no one, not a single fucking soul who could hear what happened to you and sit back. Besides, accepting you into the family? Are you kidding me? It’s a blessing to have someone like you in the family, and as if our opinions really matter when it comes to who Maxwell wants in his life. We’re lucky that it was someone like you. Just don’t make my brother wait too long to tie the knot, alright? He might take matters into his own hands and you might think you’re going on a vacation but surprise! It’s your wedding." Ben’s voice was warm, and Andrew pushed his glasses up, wiping his eyes. They were happy tears.

"I can see him doing that." Andrew said, chuckling. "It won’t happen. At least, I hope not. We’ve been open and honest about our intentions with each other." Andrew told Maxwell’s older brother and Ben chuckled.

"Good. I know it probably feels fast, coming from the life of a beta, but I promise you, you two are taking it pretty slow compared to some of the other alpha and omega relationships I know. Me and Amir? We put off meeting each other for years. Said we never wanted an arranged marriage. When we met? It was two weeks later when we woke up from the fog of what we’d done and demanded that we get engaged. We were bonded and marked only a month later." Ben chuckled, happiness in his tone. "That was years ago now, and we’ve had several ups and downs since, but that’s...pretty normal. Granted, every couple is different..." Ben trailed off and Andrew smiled through the few tears he was shedding.

"That’s pretty romantic. I doubt I can be honest about how Maxwell and I got together." Andrew joked and Ben chuckled.

"Hmm. You can just say that you started as friends first. Not everyone needs to know the details." Ben suggested and Andrew laughed.

"I just have a feeling Max might mention that he saved me from a terrible ex. Not because he wants to be a hero, but to declare that she wasn’t worthy of me or something." Ben’s big laugh on the other end of the phone felt good.

"That very well might be true. I’ll look over his speech before he says it. Make sure he drops any mention of that if it isn’t vague enough." Ben told him. Andrew glanced around the storage room, a soft, warm feeling in his chest.

"It’ll be nice to be able to use my real name soon." Andrew said quietly and Ben made a noise of agreement on the other side.

"I apologise that this was the best we could do given the circumstances. Soon your name will be cleared, Andrew. Thank you for having patience with us." Andrew shook his head, smiling.

"No. It was no hardship. It was a worry when I thought I was just a regular person, but so many things have changed in the last few months that it’s just nice...knowing that you guys cared enough to do this level of research. Do I owe you anything for that, by the way?" Andrew asked and Ben grumbled.

"There is no way in hell I’m charging you anything for this. One, it was our intention to do this investigation and two, it benefits us if their misdeeds are exposed. Besides that, think of this as a Christmas gift. So you really don’t owe me anything. Or Maxwell, or Mom, or Dad. We all just want to make sure you feel accepted and safe. That’s our biggest concern. Our hope is that this chases out that treacherous harlot of an ex of yours, as well as her connections so we can get to the root of this." Andrew smiled down at his feet, his chest warm.

"Thank you for doing all of this, Ben." Andrew thanked him again and Ben sighed.

"You’re welcome Andrew. I just thought you should get a heads up, and once again, I’m glad to hear that Richard is doing well. He’s a good man, and it’ll be an honour to have the Gates family as our in-laws, as well as the Proctors." Ben didn’t even hesitate to say that, and Andrew felt another wave of tears fill his eyes.

He hadn’t expected this kind of treatment from the Beckett family when he’d heard about them initially, but he was glad that this was the outcome. He had to brag about his in-laws to his Mom soon.
