Chapter 106: Negotiate

Evelyn had been running away now, and she was out of breath. She wondered what was happening back there. Was Luca safe?

He did say there was a little bit of time before Valerio would be back. Did he manage to erase the CCTV cameras?

By her calculation, it should be almost an hour by now and Valerio should only be arriving home. And if he had, she was sure that she’d run far enough. So by the time he found out she was missing and sent men to find her, they wouldn’t be able to find her.

The thing though was that this place was isolated. She’d been running for a while now and she hadn’t seen a single soul. She was even on a bridge which was clearly meant for cars, yet no one was driving by or even walking by.

What was going on and where in the world was she?

Who was she supposed to find in this deserted place that might even have a phone?

Walking over to the railings, she looked down, pausing at the sea beneath.

"What the...?" Where in the world was this place? She hasn’t even seen a single sign that might just give her a clue about where she was.

Evelyn wanted to scream for help. But she knew better than to do that. If Valerio had possibly already sent someone after her, screaming was basically the same as asking them to come find her right where she was. So she kept silent.

Dragging her fingers through her hair in frustration, she looked out furiously, searching for anyone, anyone at all that might be able to—

"Hello? Are you lost?"

The male voice made her freeze, fear rushing through her body.

Had they found her? It couldn’t be.

No, if it were one of the guards, they would already know it was her. Yet, this man was asking her if she was lost.

Turning, she slowly met the eyes of the man. Brown, slender, but tall. At least six feet in height.

"W-who are you?" she asked.

"I live around here," the man responded. "The name is Gallo. I saw you wandering around like you were lost. Got curious is all. Do you need help?"

Evelyn watched him cautiously.

He smiled at her. "Nothing to be wary of. Not many people live around here, so it’s easy for new residents to get lost. It’s also nighttime, so you’ll hardly find anyone out. What’s the problem?"

She swallowed.

What would be the point of being scared to ask for help?

Anything was better than being found by Valerio. She might never get a second chance to escape again.

"Do you have a phone?" she asked.

The man’s narrowed his eyes. "My phone?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I’d like to make a call and call someone I know," she said. "If you do have a phone, please help me out."

The man, Gallo nodded. "Alright." He plucked his phone out of his pocket, giving it to her.

Evelyn took it and the only number she knew, being Zayne, she proceeded to dial him. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

The call went through and just as she’d hoped, Zayne answered.

[Hello?]

His voice. She’d missed it and even thought she’d never be able to hear it again. Her eyes welled up with hot tears and she sniffled.

"Z-zayne?"

There was a pause on the other side of the phone, before a big inhale was taken. [Evelyn? Evelyn, is that you?]

"Yes." She rapidly nodded, bawling her eyes out. "It’s me. Zayne."

[Where are you? Wait, no, I know where you are and I want you to sit tight. I’m coming to get—]

The phone was snatched from her, and the call ended.

She tried to quickly turn, but she was grabbed, and a metal tip was held to her temple. "Don’t move, girl or you’re going to get really hurt."

Evelyn froze.

Her instincts had been right. She never should have answered this man. She should have kept running.

But Luca had told her to borrow a phone from someone and make a call and all night, this man had been the only person she’d seen.

"W-why are you doing this?" she asked in a shaky voice. "Please...please let me go."

"Oh, sweetheart, I can’t do that."

He chuckled.

"Don’t get it wrong though, I have no business with you. But you see I work for Valerio and I happen to find you here which can only mean one thing. You escaped and I’m sure he’s looking everywhere for you. So I’m going to give him a call, and knowing my boss, I’m going to be earning real cash tonight for finding you."

She couldn’t even cry anymore at this point but began to plead. "Please...don’t do this to me. I’ll pay you however much you want. Just let me go, I’m begging you."

"Oh?" He hissed in thought. "Well then we’re going to have to negotiate. Who are you and what is your name? Let’s see what family you’re from."

———

Zayne had tried calling the number over and over again, but no one was answering.

Well, so be it.

He already found Evelyn, and nothing was going to stop him from saving her tonight.

Staring at the mansion that was almost similar to the one he’d almost saved Evelyn from, Zayne approached the doorway and as he did, he fired bullets silently, killing the guards who were prepared to stop him.

He had no time to feel bad for anyone, Evelyn was his one and only objective.

He barged into the foyer where he came to a stop, everything going slow-mo in his eyes.

Valerio was standing there with his gun aimed at a man who was on his knees, a beat-up mess. He was about to shoot him dead, and—

Zayne fired the shot. It was precise, aimed, the bullet bursting through Valerio’s hand, shooting the weapon out of his hand.

His blood flowed, dripping drop by drop to the floor.

Silence fell everywhere and then...

...His scream erupted into the air.
