Chapter 42: start of the competition

Wednesday, At the Dragonic Magic Academy.

The air in the academy was tense, filled with excitement and anticipation. This was because it was the last day for those who had yet to register for the competition, and also the start of the competition!

Students barely focused on classes as they talked about the competition, and the discussions were heated.

The teachers didn’t mind this and allowed the students to engage themselves, after all, the competition was a big thing for them since it would decide who would represent their academy during the all-star academy tournament next month!

During classes, students of the fourth year were very calm and not too excited about the competition. They were confident and believed that the people who would represent their academy in the tournament would definitely come from their class.

This didn’t prevent them from still chatting about it. Although they were confident that their class would produce the winners, the big question was still "who" was going to be the winners?

They already considered Laura as one of the winners, they were debating who the other four were going to be.

Some even joked that Alex could shock everyone and become one of the four; they didn’t hold back in washing him with their tongues.

During classes, Alex was calm and ignored the chatter of the students around him. While some of the students were nervous and excited, Alex already knew what the results were going to be.

For himself, of course, he didn’t know about the others.

Time flew quickly, and classes were soon over. Before the teacher who taught them their last class for the day left the classroom, they were informed that all students should gather at the academy’s field.

Those who had registered for the competition were also given numbers that they would pay attention to when they reached the field.

Alex was given a tag with the number "28" written on it.

Everyone was already aware that Alex had registered for the competition, so they were not too surprised when he was also given a number tag.

After this teacher left, all of the students immediately swam out of their classes and rushed toward the field.

The field was actually a wide space that was in the heart of the academy, the academy building was built around it like a dragon curling around a mountain.

The field had a concrete floor and looked like a circular ring that was fifty meters wide. A sitting area spiralled around the field and stretched high up, the place could hold over five hundred spectators.

Reaching the field, the students saw a figure standing in the middle of the fifty-meter-wide ring. It was a woman with short black curly hair who looked to be in her early forties, who wore a long green robe that covered her shoulders down to her legs.

The students immediately recognised this woman, she was the vice dean of the Dragonic magic academy!

The vice dean smiled at the students who were looking at her, causing them to blush before they ran to find seats for themselves.

Alex also saw the vice dean when he appeared, and he raised an eyebrow in surprise; he could not see through her rank!

The vice dean also looked in his direction, and their gazes locked. The two stared at each other for more than five seconds before Alex realised what he was doing and looked away. He lowered his gaze and walked to the sitting area.

The vice dean kept her eyes on Alex as he walked away.

"This kid..." she mumbled to herself with a complicated expression on her face.

As the vice dean of the academy, she naturally knew who Alex was. After all, he was the only student with a rare element in the academy, and his reputation as a trash mage was not a secret.

She was surprised when Alex locked eyes with her; other students would usually be flustered after crossing eyes with her, but this Alex kid was different. He had maintained eye contact with her, and she couldn’t sense any nervousness from him even after he looked away.

Rather, it felt like he realised that he was doing something wrong and had quickly retracted his gaze.

"Interesting, he has finally reached the Adept rank as well." She said with a small smile, she decided to pay special attention to Alex during this period.

Time passed, and all the students finally gathered in the field, and the teachers of the academy were also present.

The vice dean began to speak, she first addressed the students. Praising those who had worked hard and encouraging them to keep working hard, as this was only the beginning.

After which she moved to why they had gathered the students here.

"You must all have been informed by your teachers, so I would speak much about the competition. I just want to add that the academy is implementing this new method to give every student a chance.

Being a class four student doesn’t necessarily mean that you are stronger than those in class three or class two..."

The vice dean talked for a bit, she informed the students that they should not expect any weak opponents and to do their best during the competition, as only those who have reached the Adept mage rank were allowed to participate.

Plus, she reminded those who were going to compete about the importance of the All-Star Academy tournament. It wasn’t just a simple tournament between the different academies in Balon City, but also a way for the various Mage universities to scout young talents that they would consider for admission into their universities.

Representatives of different Mage universities would usually attend the all-star academy tournament and take notes of promising students; these students would then receive admission letters from the universities.

To put it simply, it was a chance for the students to shine.

Listening to the vice dean talk about the Mage universities, the blood of the students boiled, and they were getting more excited for the competition; they could not wait for it to start so that they could claim a spot and qualify for the tournament next month.

After all, each academy would send five students for the tournament.

After talking for a bit more, the vice dean went on to announce the rules for the competition as two teachers walked up to the ring.

They would be the ones to step in when they noticed that things were going out of control with the students.

The students were going to compete and make it into the top five to qualify.

There were a total of 350 students participating, and every day, half of the students would be eliminated.

The competition would last for five days, and the students needed to have five straight wins to enter the top five.

After saying her piece, the vice dean disappeared from the stage, causing the students to gasp in astonishment.

But Alex and the teachers were calm because they had seen what had really happened, thanks to their high rank. The vice dean didn’t truly disappear but had run out of the stage at a speed that shocked Alex slightly.

’ She’s stronger than the Expert mage rank,’ he thought to himself.

Meanwhile, the teachers had started to call the students who would be participating. Currently, two boys are standing opposite each other in the ring.

One was wearing the academy’s uniform with a dark blue cloak around his shoulders, while the other was a boy with a bright red cloak.

A fourth-year student with the water element and a third-year student with the fire element!

"Begin!"
