Chapter 57: Chapter 57: Five Years Ago, the Person He Liked Was You

"Cole!"

Serena Kane looked shocked, her eyes welling with tears as she gazed at him. "Did Nina Thorne say something to you? How could you not believe me at all?"

"She said I went abroad because I did something wrong back then. Why doesn’t she remember how many times you two fought because of me?"

"I really don’t want to ruin your relationship. Don’t you even believe me about that, Cole?"

Serena Kane’s tears streamed down her face, and she cried as if her heart was broken. "Then what was the point of me spending the last three years abroad?"

Her crying threw Cole Kane into a state of confusion. "Okay, okay, stop crying. I was just asking."

Through her sobs, Serena Kane said, "Asking me means you don’t believe me. Maybe Nina broke off the engagement this time just to force me to go abroad again. How could she slander me like this?"

"Will she get back with you and marry you if I go abroad? If that’s the case, I’ll leave tomorrow."

After speaking, Serena Kane got up and started packing her luggage.

Cole Kane felt like his head was about to explode.

He tapped his head a couple of times, then got up and walked toward the room.

Serena Kane was crouched in front of her suitcase, but she hadn’t put any clothes in it yet. Only when she heard footsteps approaching did she start taking clothes from the wardrobe, folding them one by one, and placing them inside.

When Cole Kane entered the room and saw this, he immediately reached out to stop her.

"Serena, I never said I believed her. I just want to know the reason you went abroad." Cole Kane was very strong, and she couldn’t break free from his grip.

With tears in her eyes, Serena Kane accused him, "But you don’t believe me, Brother. I know you love Nina Thorne, but you... you don’t believe me..."

Seeing her tear-streaked face, Cole Kane’s heart ached for her. He wiped her tears away while comforting her, "Alright, don’t cry. It’s my fault, okay?"

"I don’t disbelieve you. It’s just that Nina was so insistent on her story, I had to ask you properly. I just never thought she would deliberately try to sow discord between us."

That’s what Cole Kane said, but ’it wasn’t what he was really thinking.’

’In the past, Nina Thorne had loved him. She had loved him to the bone, and it seemed like she would never leave him.’

’But this time, he could clearly sense a difference. She was truly letting go, ready to cut ties with him completely.’

"Really?" Serena Kane’s voice was soft and delicate as she looked at him with a pitiful expression.

"Really. When have I ever lied to you?"

Serena Kane threw herself into his arms, hugging him tightly. "You’re terrible, Cole. Don’t ever treat me like this again. You’re all I have..."

Cole Kane said, "Okay," but his brow furrowed slightly as he fell into deep thought.

...

The producer informed Nina Thorne that the vertical-screen project had been greenlit and filming would begin in a week.

The director needed Nina Thorne on set to make timely script revisions during filming, and Nina readily agreed.

The day before she was due on set, Macy Lynch happened to be back in Sylport and asked her out for dinner and shopping.

Today, she had dressed up for the occasion, wearing a black skirt with a purple blouse and the starry-sky watch Justin Kane had given her. The look was stylish and elegant.

During the meal, Macy Lynch exclaimed, "Wow, look at you glow! A happy relationship really makes a woman beautiful, doesn’t it? Babe, you’re looking more feminine than ever."

Nina Thorne laughed and chided her, "There you go with that glib tongue of yours. How many younger guys have you charmed with those words?"

Macy Lynch launched into her progressive theory on love. "A man has to have either looks or money, or he has to provide emotional support. If he doesn’t have any of that, what’s the point of keeping him around?"

"I can make my own money, so I don’t need to find some master to wait on. That’s why, babe, dating younger guys is the lowest-cost investment."

"It’s all physical, no strings attached."

Nina Thorne had always admired Macy Lynch’s clear-headedness and didn’t think there was anything wrong with her perspective.

On the contrary, she envied her for knowing exactly what she wanted.

After dinner, the two went to a shopping mall.

Their last shopping trip had been ruined by running into Serena Kane, so Macy hadn’t bought enough. Taking advantage of her good mood this time, she bought quite a lot.

When they entered a luxury boutique, Nina Thorne merely glanced at a handbag for a few extra seconds before Macy Lynch told the sales associate to wrap it up.

"This bag is perfect for you, especially with the outfit you’re wearing today. It’s a perfect match. Come on, I made a lot on my last project. My treat," Macy Lynch said magnanimously, proving how generous she was.

The bag cost six figures, at least.

Nina Thorne felt bad, knowing Macy didn’t earn her money easily, but she found she couldn’t refuse the gesture.

Macy Lynch feigned anger. "What, are you looking down on me? You took such good care of me back in school. I wouldn’t be where I am today without you. Just take it. Don’t make things awkward."

Nina Thorne gave a helpless smile. "Alright, then it would be rude of me to refuse."

Macy always said that she had helped her, but all Nina had really done was give her food and clothes when Macy was going through her toughest time.

It wasn’t as if she’d provided some monumental help.

Not wanting to accept the gift for nothing, she steered Macy into a luxury watch store—which happened to carry the same brand as the watch on her own wrist.

She picked out a watch and asked Macy if she thought it was beautiful.

Macy Lynch’s eyes lit up. "It’s gorgeous! You have great taste. Is this a limited edition?"

"Yes, ma’am. This is indeed the newest model from our latest collection. There are only ninety-nine in the entire world."

As soon as the associate finished speaking, Nina Thorne told her to wrap it up.

After paying, Nina Thorne put the watch directly on Macy’s wrist. "Since you like it so much, it’s yours."

Macy was astonished. "For me?"

Nina Thorne hummed in affirmation, smiling as she continued to fasten it for her.

Macy was both shocked and delighted. She grabbed Nina’s head and planted a firm kiss on her forehead. "I’m selling myself to you! From now on, you’re my sugar mama."

Nina Thorne: "..."

The sales associate complimented their deep friendship, then her gaze fell on the watch Nina Thorne was wearing. She recognized it as being from their brand, but she had never seen it in any of their collections.

Nina Thorne noticed the associate’s expression and asked, "Is something wrong?"

The associate smiled and explained politely, "The watch you’re wearing, ma’am, seems to be a custom piece from our brand..."

Nina Thorne and Macy Lynch exchanged a surprised look.

Macy pressed, "Custom? Are you sure?"

The associate gave an awkward smile and shook her head, saying she wasn’t certain.

Nina Thorne recalled that when Justin Kane gave her the watch, she had also thought it looked similar to a model the brand had released five years ago, but not exactly.

Just then, Vanessa Walsh’s voice sounded from behind her. "Nina Thorne? What a coincidence. You’re here too."

Nina Thorne looked over and broke into a delighted smile when she saw who it was. "President Walsh, what a coincidence."

"Still calling me President Walsh? Have you forgotten? Just call me Vanessa." Vanessa Walsh walked toward them with an easy grace and a charming smile.

Nina Thorne made the introductions.

After being introduced, Macy Lynch and Vanessa Walsh greeted each other politely.

Macy Lynch, being socially savvy, excused herself to go look at clothes in the boutique next door, leaving them to talk.

Once Macy was gone, Vanessa Walsh’s gaze fell on Nina’s wrist. "Kane gave you this, didn’t he?"

Although it was phrased as a question, she seemed to already know the answer.

Nina Thorne replied softly, "Yes."

Vanessa Walsh looked at her in surprise, her expression shifting as if she had just discovered something.

"As far as I know, Kane had this watch custom-made by this brand five years ago."

Nina Thorne stared at her, stunned, but before she could ask a question...

Vanessa Walsh grabbed Nina Thorne’s hand, her eyes filled with joyous surprise. "Nina Thorne, so you’re the one he was in love with five years ago!"
