Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Cole Kane, I Don’t Like You Anymore

Nina Thorne was inwardly calm, her eyes holding an unwavering, cold light. "Are you finished?"

"What do you mean?" Cole Kane was startled. He hadn’t expected her to be so calm.

’Shouldn’t she be getting angry like she always did, questioning why he wasn’t on her side?’

"If you’re done, then get lost. Don’t stand here embarrassing yourself." Nina Thorne shot him a glare and took Macy Lynch’s hand, preparing to leave.

But she wanted to leave, and Cole Kane wasn’t about to let her.

He suddenly grabbed Nina Thorne’s shoulder with force, yanking her back. "Get back here and make yourself clear!"

Nina Thorne stumbled back several steps before steadying herself, a sharp pain shooting through her left shoulder.

"Cole Kane, are you insane?" Nina Thorne gritted her teeth against the pain and turned to roar at him.

The moment she got angry, Cole Kane felt a smug satisfaction.

’That’s more like it.’

In the past, whenever Nina Thorne was displeased, she would throw one of her spoiled tantrums. That’s how he knew she still cared about him.

Instantly, most of Cole Kane’s earlier annoyance vanished, and his tone softened.

"I admit, it was my fault for letting Todd Grant give Serena credit for your script."

"But you’re the one who caused Serena to need stitches in her head, and you also scalded her chest with hot water. So let’s just call it even."

"Besides, Todd Grant was kicked out of the company and Director Young was dealt with. You should let go of your anger by now."

Cole Kane rubbed the bridge of his nose, suppressing the dissatisfaction in his eyes. "And besides, there’s something I haven’t even brought up with you yet."

Nina Thorne frowned at him, her pale face filled with confusion. "What is it?"

Cole Kane looked at her and let out a long sigh. "I know Grandpa has always doted on you, but at the fundraiser, those few classmates of ours just questioned you a little."

"But then you had Grandpa step in, and what was the result? One by one, their companies collapsed and they lost their jobs..."

Listening to Cole Kane’s long string of accusations, a desolate sorrow spread through Nina Thorne’s heart.

’How pitiful. To think she had once been so pathetic in his eyes that even when she said she wanted to break up and call off the engagement, Cole Kane just assumed she was throwing a tantrum.’

No matter what happened, Cole Kane’s first instinct was always to blame her.

"Cole Kane..."

Nina Thorne suddenly felt drained, too exhausted to even curse at him.

Macy Lynch, however, had heard and understood everything Cole Kane said. She suddenly exploded, swinging her handbag at him.

"Cole Kane, you son of a bitch, are you even human?!"

The handbag struck Cole Kane hard across the face as Macy Lynch cursed:

"You know damn well why Nina gave up her own major to become a screenwriter! And you, you heartless bastard, you took her work and gave it to that snake Serena Kane."

"It’s not that you got your brains kicked in by a donkey, it’s that you have no brains at all! You’re a fucking idiot! A pure-bred one!"

Cole Kane raised his arm to block the blows, his voice low. "Macy Lynch, stop it right now, or I won’t hold back..."

"Oh yeah? Just try me!"

Macy Lynch wasn’t the least bit afraid. "That bunch of trash slandered and questioned Nina with baseless accusations, without any regard for the truth. Let’s not even get into the fact that Nina didn’t do it."

"Even if she had, they would have deserved it! You have no right to say a single word against her."

Macy Lynch kept cursing as she relentlessly slammed her bag into him, forcing Cole Kane to retreat step by step, unable to withstand her ferocious assault.

Seeing this, Serena Kane tried to step in and help, attempting to pull Macy Lynch away, but she only ended up getting hit as well.

Serena Kane shrieked as she was hit, "Macy Lynch, are you crazy? Stop hitting us, stop it..."

"If heaven won’t take a bitch like you, then I will!" Macy Lynch only grew more incensed, hitting Serena Kane so hard she cried out in pain again and again.

Nina Thorne watched coldly from the side. Seeing the wretched pair getting beaten, she felt a profound sense of satisfaction.

Then she looked at Macy Lynch, who was holding nothing back to vent Nina’s anger for her, and a wave of emotion washed over her. As she watched, her eyes couldn’t help but well up with tears.

After her parents passed away, besides her grandfather, Macy Lynch was the only one who protected her like this.

All these years, Macy had stood by her through thick and thin, cherishing and protecting her, doing a better job than Cole Kane, her so-called boyfriend.

But recently, it seemed she had gained another source of care—the one from Justin Kane.

"That’s enough!"

Cole Kane’s voice rang out, filled with rage.

Nina Thorne saw him holding Serena Kane, protecting her tightly in his arms. He had one hand clamped on Macy Lynch’s handbag, his face lifted to glare furiously at Macy, his eyes bloodshot.

"Macy Lynch, I’ve had enough of you. It seems if I don’t teach you a lesson today, you’ll never learn your place."

Cole Kane’s expression was savage, a murderous look appearing in his eyes. With that, he aimed a kick at Macy Lynch.

"Watch out..."

Nina Thorne’s eyes widened. She hurriedly shoved Macy Lynch aside, and Cole Kane’s kick landed heavily on her side.

With a pained scream, "AHH!", Nina Thorne’s body was thrown a meter away.

It was a powerful kick.

"Nina!"

"Nina!"

Two voices cried out at the same time—the first in fear, the second in shock.

The first voice belonged to Macy Lynch, who rushed forward and lifted Nina Thorne’s upper body, her eyes filling with panicked tears. "Nina, how are you? Are you okay?"

"Nina..."

Cole Kane let go of Serena Kane and approached Nina, only to be met by Macy Lynch’s furious, red-eyed glare. She roared at him in a hoarse voice, "If anything happens to Nina, I’ll never let you get away with it."

Stunned and guilt-ridden, Cole Kane stood there, at a complete loss.

Serena Kane had seen Cole Kane kick Nina away with her own eyes, and she was secretly thrilled, but she didn’t dare show it openly.

She quickly went to Cole Kane’s side and said angrily to Macy Lynch, "If you hadn’t been going crazy and attacking us, how would my brother have accidentally hurt Nina?"

"When you think about it, you’re the one to blame. If something happens to Nina, you’ll be the first person held responsible."

Macy Lynch gritted her teeth and glared at her. Right now, her entire focus was on Nina; she didn’t want to waste time in a war of words with them.

"Nina, how are you? Quick, tell me where it hurts." Macy Lynch’s gaze returned to Nina’s face, her own eyes quickly turning red.

Nina Thorne was in so much pain she was breaking out in a cold sweat. It felt as if her waist had been nearly broken in half, and her teeth were chattering.

She didn’t want Macy Lynch to worry, so she shook her head, her small face pale. "I’m okay... it just hurts."

Macy Lynch knew how hard that kick had been. Having not shed a tear in years, she instantly burst out crying from anxiety.

"Are you an idiot? Do you have any idea how dangerous that was? If your back was broken, what would I do for the rest of my life?"

Nina Thorne regulated her breathing, and the pain did indeed lessen. She then forced a smile and raised a hand to wipe away Macy Lynch’s tears.

"Don’t cry. It’s not a good look on you."

Macy Lynch’s heart ached, but she still let out a small laugh. "It really isn’t..."

"Nina," Cole Kane said, a rare look of guilt appearing on his face. "Let me take you to the hospital."

Nina Thorne was in too much pain to have any strength, but she still managed a cold rebuke. "Don’t touch me."

Her voice was laced with disgust, and she didn’t even spare him a glance.

Cole Kane froze.

Nina Thorne had Macy Lynch help her up. Enduring the excruciating pain in her side, she looked at Cole Kane with an indifferent expression on her deathly pale face.

"Cole Kane, was I not clear enough before? I told you, we’re breaking up, calling off the—"

"Okay, okay, okay, whatever you want is fine. But for now, can we please just go to the hospital first?" Cole Kane said, his face anxious as he tried to coax her softly.

This was the first time Nina Thorne had ever seen such urgency and worry on his face.

Suddenly, it reminded her of four years ago.

A young Nina Thorne had been sick and needed an IV, but she cried from the pain. A young Cole Kane, flustered and not knowing what to do, had stretched his arm out to her and said: ’If it hurts, you can bite me. That way, I can hurt with you.’

Back then, Cole Kane had truly, genuinely cared for her, cherished her...

Thinking of the past, waves of sorrow and bitterness washed over Nina Thorne’s heart, like a cold wind brushing past.

Pulling herself back from her thoughts, she looked at Cole Kane with desolate eyes and said weakly, but firmly, "Cole Kane, whether you believe it or not, I don’t love you anymore."
