Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Annul the Engagement, Granting the Scumbags Their Wish

Nina Thorne organized her documents and contacted the lawyer Macy Lynch had recommended for a consultation.

After the consultation, she sent the documents over.

The lawyer sent a text, sounding hesitant. "If you want to sue them for plagiarizing your script, I’m afraid this alone won’t be enough evidence."

Nina Thorne asked, "What other evidence do I need?"

"You could try communicating with the company," the lawyer suggested. "Get some solid chat logs or even a recording of a phone call."

Nina Thorne understood the lawyer’s subtle hint and replied, "Okay."

’But what would count as solid evidence?’

’A recording?’

’She had one, but it probably wasn’t enough.’

Nina Thorne sent a message to Todd Grant, demanding an explanation.

Todd Grant asked her to come to the office on Monday to discuss it in person.

In the study, Assistant Cheney reported to Justin Kane that he had discovered Nina Thorne’s script had been plagiarized.

Justin Kane’s expression turned grim. "Go find Ryan Reeves at OmniCorp. Tell him if he doesn’t handle this properly, he can forget about keeping his company open."

His voice was deep and powerful, laced with a formidable, biting chill.

Assistant Cheney silently broke out in a cold sweat for OmniCorp. ’Of all the people to offend, they had to go and cross the missus.’

’Those people from the fundraiser must have been dealt with already!’

After dismissing Assistant Cheney, Justin Kane was lost in thought. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

His long fingers tapped intermittently on the desktop.

After a moment, he picked up the phone on his desk and made a call. "I’m recommending someone to you."

The person on the other end was surprised. "Who?"

"Nina Thorne." Justin Kane was a man of few words, but those words carried immense weight.

Hearing the name, the other person exclaimed in shock, "You mean your brother’s girlfriend."

As Justin Kane’s best friend, Seth Lawson might not have known everything about the Kane Family’s affairs, but he was familiar with the general gist of things.

A chill flashed in Justin Kane’s eyes as he corrected him. "They broke up."

Seth Lawson found this fascinating. "Everyone in our circle knows Nina Thorne was head over heels for Cole Kane. And they actually broke up?"

"Do you have too much free time?" Justin Kane’s voice was laced with an unmistakable chill that seemed to travel through the phone.

The Lawson Family was one of Sylport’s four great families, second only to the Kane Family and on par with the Thorne Family in terms of power.

However, the Thorne Family had become more conservative in recent years and had gradually faded from the limelight, allowing the Lawson Family to slowly surpass them.

Moreover, Seth Lawson ran the largest media company in Sylport, which meant he effectively had the city’s entire entertainment news scene under his thumb.

"Fine, fine, I’ll drop it, alright?" Seth Lawson said, though he didn’t mean it. "You were always nice to the girl. If they’ve really broken up, then this is your chance."

He expected Justin Kane to get angry, but instead, he heard him reply in an excellent mood, "You think I need you to tell me that?"

Seth Lawson was speechless.

’Something’s off!’

’Very off.’

He suddenly remembered what Vanessa Walsh had said a few days ago: "Justin’s been hitting it off with some girl lately. It’s like he’s in love."

At the time, Seth Lawson had scoffed at the idea. ’In all these years, no other woman has ever managed to catch his eye.’

So he’d gossiped with Vanessa Walsh, "Do you know her name?"

"Gas," Vanessa Walsh had said.

Seth Lawson: "?"

He had thought it was a strange name for a person.

Now, hearing Justin Kane mention Nina Thorne’s name, he had a sudden flashback to ten years ago.

At a banquet, a thirteen-year-old Nina Thorne had punched a boy her age just for saying she ate a lot.

Justin Kane had even joked to Seth Lawson, "She’s so young, but she has the temper of ’gas’."

Seth Lawson hadn’t understood. "What do you mean?"

Justin Kane had laughed fondly. "Highly flammable and explosive."

’So!’

’The "Gas" in Justin’s contacts... was Nina Thorne?’

Seth Lawson felt like he had just stumbled upon a massive secret...

...

Late that night, when Justin Kane returned to the bedroom, Nina Thorne was tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep.

The soft lamplight fell upon her. Her hair fanned out across the pillow like a brightly colored flower in full bloom.

But her fair face was clouded with a persistent sorrow.

"Still awake?"

Justin Kane lay down beside her, turning on his side to face her. "What’s on your mind?"

Nina Thorne answered evasively, "Just a little problem with the script, but I can handle it."

"I’m sure you can," Justin Kane said softly, his gentle features softening even more. "But if you need anything from me, don’t hesitate to ask."

Nina Thorne felt as if he already knew something, but then dismissed the thought as impossible.

She met his gentle gaze, and a trace of warmth seeped into her cold heart. "I know, Justin."

’She still wanted to resolve this on her own.’

「The weekend passed.」

Early Monday morning, Nina Thorne went back to the office to meet with Todd Grant.

In the conference room, besides Todd Grant and Director Young, there was also an unwelcome pair.

It was Cole Kane and Serena Kane.

The setup felt a lot like they were ganging up on her.

Nina Thorne shot them a cold glance, her lips curling into a frigid smile. "What is the meaning of this?"

Todd Grant spoke with an air of superiority. "We’ll pay you triple your usual rate for this script. How about you just quietly finish writing the remaining forty episodes?"

"Not interested," Nina Thorne said, her expression cold. "You plagiarized my script. That’s copyright infringement, and it’s illegal. I can sue you."

"You?" Todd Grant’s eyes flashed with malice. "Nina Thorne, do you have any idea what it means to be hopelessly outmatched?"

"Can’t I?" Nina Thorne’s expression was firm, her demeanor calm and unhurried.

No one at the company knew that she was the daughter of the Thorne Family.

After she graduated, her grandfather had wanted her to come back and help manage the family company.

But Nina Thorne’s passions lay elsewhere, so she refused and joined OmniCorp as a screenwriter instead.

Cole Kane felt her job wasn’t respectable and had urged her to quit several times.

If they had actually gone to get their marriage license that day, she really would have quit.

For Cole Kane’s sake, she had lost herself over the years.

Now, that damned scumbag had the audacity to give her script to Serena Kane.

A wave of sorrow washed over Nina Thorne, but it was quickly replaced by a sense of ridicule. ’How laughable.’

Serena Kane said with false sincerity, "Nina, being a screenwriter isn’t a very respectable job anyway. Why don’t you take this opportunity to listen to Cole, quit your job, and just be with him? Wouldn’t that be better?"

"As long as you apologize to him properly, I’m sure he won’t call off your engagement."

Nina Thorne looked at her, amused. "Apologize? Are you dreaming, or are you just a shameless bitch? I’ll say it again: I’m the one breaking the engagement, not him!"

Todd Grant and Director Young were stunned. Nina Thorne and Cole Kane were actually engaged!

But they quickly figured it out: Cole Kane was intentionally trying to make things difficult for Nina Thorne. With that realization, the two of them relaxed.

No matter how this mess with the script played out, the blame wouldn’t fall on them in the end.

"Nina Thorne!" Cole Kane shot to his feet, strode over to her, and snapped with a grim face, "Do you have to speak to Serena that way? She’s just trying to help you!"

"Giving her the script was my idea. Finish writing this one, and then you’re done. When my parents get back, we’ll go get our marriage license."

Cole Kane reached for her hand, his tone turning gentle and coaxing. "Serena just got back from overseas, and she’s interested in writing a screenplay. Just do her this one favor and let her have your script."

"Once we’re married, you’ll be Mrs. Cole Kane of the Kane Family. I’ll make plenty of money for you to spend."

Cole Kane gazed at Nina Thorne with what he believed was deep affection, imagining the scene of her being moved to tears by his words.

But when Nina Thorne looked up at him, her brow was deeply furrowed. There wasn’t a trace of emotion on her face, only disgust.

"If you’re sick in the head, go get it treated. I told you, we are breaking up, and the engagement is off! If you want to get married so badly, go marry Serena Kane. I’d be more than happy to see you two despicable animals end up together!"
