Chapter 31: Chapter 31: You? You’re Not Worthy

The man was dressed in a dark suit, his expression cold and his gaze piercing. His powerful aura was intimidating.

His arrival caused an uproar.

The attendees of this fundraiser were all talented elites who had graduated from Sylport U, each a success in their respective fields.

But none of them could compare to Justin Kane.

"It’s Mr. Kane from the Kane Group, the true head of the Kane Family," someone gasped.

In that moment, Cole Kane, who had just been lauded to the skies, was reduced to a laughingstock. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

There had only ever been one true Mr. Kane.

And that was Justin Kane.

Principal Tate went to greet him personally. Justin Kane’s expression softened slightly, and he stated that he would handle today’s matter himself.

Principal Tate nodded and agreed.

Everyone treated Justin Kane with the utmost respect, turning Cole Kane into a mere foil.

Cole Kane’s heart twisted with resentment. He secretly clenched his fists as dark thoughts began to fester within him.

’Could it be him?’ Macy Lynch quickly connected him to the three hundred million and turned to look at Nina Thorne.

Nina Thorne shook her head. She didn’t know.

Ever since that phone call, their thawing relationship seemed to have frozen over again. She hadn’t even known he was rushing back today.

Nina Thorne stared blankly at Justin Kane as he approached her, only snapping out of it when he was right in front of her. "I thought you weren’t coming back today."

"If I hadn’t come back, would you have just let these people bully you?" Justin Kane’s low voice betrayed no emotion. "Have you forgotten how to show your claws?"

In the past, Cole Kane had said Nina Thorne had the temper of a spoiled princess—bratty and awful.

To please him, Nina Thorne had tried hard to change, gradually learning to be more tolerant.

Nina Thorne pouted, looking wronged. "There were too many of them. Macy and I were completely outnumbered."

Macy Lynch’s eyes widened. ’Am I seeing things?’

’Nina’s actually acting weak in front of him?’

’I can’t be the weak link.’ She nodded in agreement. "If you hadn’t shown up, I don’t think we would have been able to leave this place today."

Justin Kane’s expression was frosty. "I’d like to see who would dare."

Just as he spoke, Cole Kane and Serena Kane walked up to him.

Several other men in crisp suits came over as well, greeting him respectfully.p>Cole Kane shot a wary glance at Nina Thorne before quickly turning to Justin Kane. "Brother," he said, feigning surprise, "weren’t you on a business trip in Marinus? How did you get back so fast? I thought you wouldn’t be able to make it today."

Serena Kane looked suspiciously at Nina Thorne, then covertly at Justin Kane. ’Something feels off,’ she thought.

’When did they get so close?’

Serena Kane added considerately, "That’s right, Brother. You’re so busy, you really didn’t need to rush back just for the fundraiser. With Cole here representing the Kane Family, it’s all the same."

"Are you telling me what to do?" Justin Kane’s gaze was chilling, and a coldness seemed to radiate from him.

Serena’s expression froze. She lowered her head. "No, I was just concerned about you, Brother."

The onlookers exchanged meaningful glances.

They tried to strike up a conversation with Justin Kane, hoping to make an impression.

Nina Thorne hadn’t forgotten how these very people had kicked her while she was down. She deliberately tilted her head up, putting on a wronged, coquettish air for Justin Kane. "Justin, it was them. They were the ones who said I faked the donation."

She smiled at Justin Kane, all sweetness and vulnerability—a stark contrast to her usual fiery, firecracker-like personality.

Even though she wasn’t certain about the three hundred million, she had a strong suspicion it was Justin Kane’s handiwork.

Macy Lynch marveled at her friend’s acting skills. ’She can turn it on in an instant!’

’I can’t hold her back.’ She had to provide support for Nina. "That’s not all. These people also accused Nina of bullying and of forcing Serena Kane to leave the country..."

"Is that so?" Justin Kane’s icy gaze swept over them. The men flinched and immediately began to apologize.

They never imagined that Nina Thorne had someone as powerful as Justin Kane backing her.

They had been trying to curry favor with Cole Kane, but now they had offended Justin Kane instead.

Nina Thorne didn’t accept their apologies. "If saying sorry fixed everything, what would we need the police for?"

A chill emanated from Justin Kane’s already stern face. "It seems you’ve all been living too comfortably lately."

"Brother, don’t listen to Nina’s nonsense..." Cole Kane attempted to explain.

Justin Kane didn’t give him the chance, cutting him off coldly. "A few years of playing ’Mr. Kane’ and you’ve forgotten your place?"

"Nina Thorne is the daughter of the Thorne Family, she is Master Thorne’s most treasured child," he said, a destructive light in his eyes. "Who do you think you are to speak of her?"

Justin Kane’s powerful presence was so intimidating that no one dared to even breathe too loudly.

He was the absolute power in Sylport, incredibly well-connected and resourceful. No one dared to cross him.

Not even Cole Kane.

Serena Kane was nearly driven mad with jealousy. Ignoring Justin Kane’s fury, she complained, "Brother, you haven’t even investigated the matter. How can you just protect her and show Cole no respect at all?"

"This is not your place to speak." Justin Kane shot her a cold glance, then turned his somber face to Assistant Cheney and ordered,

"Investigate everything that happened today. I want to see exactly who dared to treat her this way."

After issuing the cold command, Justin Kane didn’t wait for Nina Thorne to respond, simply leading her away from the scene.

Macy Lynch followed them to the parking lot. Only after they had left the crowd far behind did she speak. "Justin Kane, based on what you did today, you pass. Take good care of Nina from now on. I’ll be counting on you!"

"?" Nina Thorne was speechless.

After Macy Lynch left, Justin Kane’s handsome face was stern. "We’ll talk when we get back."

Nina Thorne said, "Oh," unable to object.

It was just as well; she had questions for him too.

...

Back in the villa’s great hall, Justin Kane went straight to the sofa and sat down. He crossed his legs, loosened his tie with his long fingers, and then raised an eyebrow.

"Let’s hear it. The reason for the divorce."

Nina Thorne was stunned. ’That’s the first thing he asks about?’

Nina Thorne evaded the question. "You answer me first. Was it you who donated the three hundred million in my name?"

"Yes," Justin Kane replied crisply, then pressed on, "Your turn. What’s the reason for the divorce?"

He raised a thick, handsome eyebrow. His shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his tie hung loosely, and his narrow, teasing eyes glinted. The cold sternness of his aura was gone, replaced by a hint of wild, devilish charm.

Seeing Justin Kane like this, even more so than when he was being gentle, made it impossible for her not to feel her heart race.

Nina Thorne considered how to begin.

But Justin Kane seemed to lose his patience. He rose to his full height and stood before her. "You were so nonchalant on the phone. Why so quiet now?"

’He looks... anxious,’ Nina Thorne thought, seeing it in his eyes.

She decided to be blunt. "Don’t you have someone you like? We should divorce now, before anyone else finds out we’re legally married. It will save a lot of trouble."

Justin Kane narrowed his eyes, his dark gaze bottomless as he stared at her, probing. "Tell me the truth. Is it that you don’t want to be with me?"

When Nina had asked for a divorce that night, he’d assumed she and Cole Kane had gotten back together.

But after an investigation by Assistant Cheney, there were no signs of them reconciling.

So Justin Kane couldn’t understand.

’Everything was fine. Why did she suddenly want a divorce?’

Nina Thorne hated having the question turned back on her, as if she were the one at fault.

She retorted irritably, "You were with that woman the other night, and you’re telling me I can’t ask for a divorce?"

Hearing this, Justin Kane’s brow arched. "The woman you’re talking about... is it Vanessa Walsh?"

Nina Thorne’s frown deepened, and a flicker of annoyance crossed her face.

’He’s even telling me her name. What’s next, does he want to share his fond memories with me?’
