Chapter 446: Chapter 446: Like a Changed Person

Ye Ningwan managed to cheer up Zhan Hanjue, but didn’t forget to think of a solution.

However, even though a solution came to mind, it was uncertain who would be suitable for the task.

Wu was probably not an option since he was always by Zhan Hanjue’s side, and that person would surely recognize him.

Wen Jianan and Jin Yingzi were also not suitable since they were recognized as well.

Wu Taotao was out of the question too.

So for the time being, there was really no suitable person in mind.

As she was fretting, the phone suddenly rang.

Ye Ningwan looked and saw it was Wu Wei calling.

"You still remember to call me, I thought you planned to cut off all contact with everyone. Roam the world your whole life, being a drifter with no roots."

Ye Ningwan picked up and started with sarcasm.

No surprise she was mad at him.

Back then, when Wu Taotao came to Jiangcheng to study, Wu Wei followed, so technically, he came along with her.

The village head suggested that the two might end up together.

After all, Wu Wei had always exhibited behavior indicating he saw her as a future wife.

But truth be told, even if she hadn’t met Zhan Hanjue, she could never like Wu Wei.

Wu Wei quickly came to grips with that fact, and he didn’t persist, opting instead to focus solely on helping her instead of working.

Since the village head entrusted him with the care of his two children and Wu Wei was always around for her,

it was all going well until he up and disappeared one day.

He wouldn’t answer calls or respond to messages, going for two years straight without contacting home.

Wu Taotao was furious when talking about it.

The village head got so angry he fell ill, and even after recovering, he had a lingering cough. She dared not to return to the village, afraid of being beaten to death. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

She had thought of contacting Wu Wei while abroad, but couldn’t reach him.

After returning home, she tried again, even asked the Xie Family in Tong City.

Upon mentioning him, Xie Mingyu was equally furious—after all, he had taken his handmaiden away, and he would probably beat him to death on sight.

So, besides knowing Wu Wei was alive, nobody could contact him.

Now that Wu Wei suddenly called out of the blue using his old number, Ye Ningwan was both surprised and delighted.

Yet she naturally started with cold sarcasm.

"Ningning, are you mad?" Wu Wei asked.

Ye Ningwan scoffed, "Wu Wei, don’t you think I have every right to be mad?"

Wu Wei said, "Yes, you have every right to be mad. But now’s not the time. I need a favor. I’m at your clinic right now. Come quickly."

Ye Ningwan raised an eyebrow.

Just as she was about to ask what it was about, Wu Wei hung up.

She quickly changed and headed out, instructing the driver to take her to the clinic.

Upon arriving and seeing Wu Wei, whom she hadn’t seen in a long time, she almost didn’t recognize him.

Although Wu Wei wasn’t a rough person, he did grow up in the countryside. There was always an evident difference between him and the city elite.

She remembered the last she saw Wu Wei; he was a spirited young man with a buzz cut.

But upon seeing Wu Wei now, she almost thought she had mistaken him for someone else.

"Are you Wu Wei?" Ye Ningwan frowned.

Looking at facial features, it was still Wu Wei, but he seemed different somehow.

"You didn’t go to Korea for plastic surgery, did you?" Ye Ningwan asked with a mocking tone.

Wu Wei was speechless, "What nonsense, why would I get surgery? I just changed my hairstyle and got glasses."

Only now did Ye Ningwan closely examine him; indeed, his features hadn’t changed.

But his hairstyle, from the buzz cut to a very Korean-looking style, resembled that of a social elite.

Especially with a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, he appeared more refined and cultured.

Yet, that underlying edginess remained. On closer inspection, he had a somewhat cultivated villain vibe.

"If Taotao saw you now, she definitely wouldn’t recognize you. But why make yourself look like this?" Ye Ningwan curiously asked.

Wu Wei cleared his throat, "It’s because Xie Mingyu kept sending people to find us, so we had to disguise ourselves to avoid being traced. After a while, I got used to it and quite like this look, don’t you think?"

"It is nice, but it doesn’t quite feel like you," Ye Ningwan commented.

Wu Wei said, "Let’s not talk about this now; go check on Tingyu’s condition first."

"Is Tingyu sick?" Ye Ningwan frowned.

Wu Wei’s lips twitched, but he still nodded.

Ye Ningwan was puzzled, why did he seem happy when Tingyu was ill?

However, as she went inside and saw Tingyu, she understood why Wu Wei was happy despite her being sick.

It turned out that Tingyu wasn’t sick; she was pregnant.

Looking at her belly, she was at least six months along.

Her complexion was rosy and she seemed well cared for, as a pregnant woman should be healthy.

Ye Ningwan sighed with relief; as long as there weren’t any major problems, it was alright.

After all, she knew Tingyu well and naturally didn’t want anything to happen to her.

But she still needed to take her pulse to be sure.

"Let me check your pulse. Before that, tell me what you’ve been feeling. There must be a reason you came to me so urgently!" Ye Ningwan said.

Tingyu greeted Ye Ningwan and explained her symptoms.

"I keep feeling that the baby inside me is unusual. It’s as if it’s too active and my belly seems too big," Tingyu said.

Ye Ningwan was puzzled, "Too active? Too big? How many months are you along?"

"Four months," Tingyu replied.

"Are you sure?" Ye Ningwan was surprised.

Given her belly, she looked at least six months along, how could it be four?

"I think... probably! After my period ended, I didn’t have another one the next month, so if I count the time, it should be around four months," Tingyu earnestly recalled.

Ye Ningwan said, "You can’t just estimate based on the time you haven’t been counting; you’d have a better idea if you went to the hospital for an examination. Doctors will give you a precise time."

As she spoke, Ye Ningwan was already taking her wrist to check her pulse.

However, upon checking, her expression suddenly changed, and she looked at her in shock.

Wu Wei had been observing Ye Ningwan’s expressions closely. Seeing her expression change suddenly, he immediately asked, "What’s wrong with Tingyu?"

There definitely was a problem; if there wasn’t, Ye Ningwan wouldn’t have that expression.

Ye Ningwan asked, "Did you two not go for any check-ups since the pregnancy?"

Tingyu nodded.

Wu Wei explained, "Xie Mingyu kept sending people to look for us. We feared going to the hospital would lead him to discover us."

"It’s not like he’s going to harm you guys. You two left without a word; as the person who raised Tingyu, isn’t he allowed to ask why?" Ye Ningwan was speechless.

Wu Wei anxiously said, "Never mind that now, first tell me, what about Tingyu?"

He didn’t care about Xie Mingyu’s thoughts; he was only worried about Tingyu and her baby.
