Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Eliana’s Real Father

What did Cliff mean by what he just said? Why was Cliff so eager to be Eliana’s father when he had always seemed uninterested in being one? What was Cliff really planning? While Edith had initially felt comfortable being friends with Cliff, she now began to feel uneasy because Cliff seemed to be forcing her.

Edith hid her nervousness by clenching her fists under the table. If Cliff was Eliana’s true biological father, what about Callum? Should she abandon him just because the DNA test results didn’t match?

"Why are you so confident about wanting to be Eliana’s father?"

Cliff put his arm around his ex-fiancée’s shoulder affectionately. "Isn’t it obvious that I’m the perfect father for Eliana? Besides, we were engaged. What more proof do you need for me to marry you?"

"I was actually really surprised by what you said earlier. I’ve only ever considered you a friend. It’s strange that I would consider you more than a friend."

"I don’t mind if you still think of me as your friend. What’s certain is that I want to marry you."

"But, are you sure Eliana will accept you? Eliana still doesn’t like you very much."

"It’s okay. I can try to get along with him better. Kids are bound to be like that when they meet a stranger, especially when that stranger is going to be their father."

Actually, there was one more thing Edith wanted to ask. Cliff had always brought up Eliana, but why hadn’t he ever mentioned Erdin? If Cliff had felt like he’d missed Erdin for five years, he should have realized it sooner.

"Cliff, I want to ask you one more question. Do you know Erdin?"

"Eliana’s twin brother?"

"Yes. The last time I was told, Erdin died five years ago. Is that true?"

Cliff pressed his lips together tightly. He knelt before his ex-fiancée, bowing his head.

"I’m sorry I lied to you all this time. Your son isn’t actually dead. He was kidnapped."

Edith furrowed her eyebrows. "What do you mean?"

"I didn’t dare tell you all this time because I was afraid you would criticize me for failing to be a good father. Actually, our son was kidnapped by my half-brother when you had your accident."

"What?!" Actually, Edith didn’t want to believe Cliff’s words too quickly because it was impossible for Callum to commit a crime to this extent.

Edith found it hard to imagine Callum as a bad person. He had always cared for her, and she had even witnessed the touching interaction between Callum and his twins. It was impossible for Callum to be so greedy as to kidnap a child. But was Cliff’s story true? For some reason, she felt like he was making it up.

"I know it’s hard for you to believe it. But I will definitely prove to you that Erdin is also my son."

"What are you going to prove?"

Cliff handed me a tube of toothpaste wrapped in plastic. "You can do a DNA test if you want."

"Why do I have to go this far?"

"I don’t want to be a coward in your eyes. But, if it’s proven that Erdin is my son, then you must marry me, and I will take Erdin from my half-brother."

Now Edith was even more confused about what to do. Should she accept this bet so she wouldn’t have to live in misery anymore? However, on the one hand, she felt incredibly awkward. If the DNA test results proved that Erdin and Eliana were Cliff’s biological twins, then she would have to become Callum’s enemy. She had been having fun with Callum all this time, and soon she would have to become his worst enemy. For now, she wanted to act as if she didn’t know anything.

Ever since meeting Cliff, Edith hadn’t been able to do anything calmly. Even when picking up the children from school, she kept her mouth shut. If the DNA test proved Cliff was the biological father of her twins, would she have to take Erdin away from Callum? She couldn’t imagine Callum’s reaction to the situation he was in. If she made the wrong decision, it would impact her life in the future.

Edith sat pensively eating ice cream with her twins. She could only stare at them, who were getting along better as time went by. Increasingly, she couldn’t bear to destroy this little family, and she desperately hoped that at least a piece of her memory would return.

"Mom, the ice cream has melted," said Erdin while staring at his mother’s chocolate vanilla ice cream which was starting to drip into the bowl.

Edith slapped her forehead and then devoured her ice cream with gusto. "Oh my gosh! I almost forgot to eat the ice cream."

"What’s wrong, Mom?" Eliana asked with an innocent look.

"Actually, I’m just sleepy."

"Did we play too much with mom yesterday?"

Edith shook her head quickly. "No. In fact, I really enjoy playing with you guys."

Eliana rubbed his palms together quickly. "Forgive us, Mom."

"Why should you apologize, my daughter? I really enjoyed watching you play with your father last night."

"I really enjoyed playing with Dad yesterday. Plus, Dad is perfect for being a prince."

"But, Mom and Dad looked like they were arguing this morning." Erdin pouted as he played with his spoon in the bowl. "I don’t like seeing Mom and Dad arguing because of us."

Eliana nodded. "I agree. Mom and Dad seem a bit awkward today."

Edith rolled her eyes. "Why are you accusing me of fighting with your father?"

"Mom just kept quiet when Dad wanted to feed you. Then, Dad looked angry when Mom didn’t want to be fed."

"Who said I was fighting with your mother?"

Callum’s sudden appearance startled Edith. Furthermore, Callum’s behavior was quite over the top, as he openly put his arm around her shoulders in front of the twins. Edith lowered her head in shame, staring at her melting ice cream.

"Callum, when did you get here? I mean, how did you know the kids and I were here?"

"Of course I would know from my son. He’s the one who told me to accompany you now."
