Chapter 66: Chapter 66: Monkey See, But Shouldn’t Do

Noah halted his actions, his gaze narrowed in response to the unwelcome voice that had disrupted his focus. Ishii, sensing Noah’s scrutiny, was filled with alarm, a foreboding sense of impending doom washing over him as he briefly locked eyes with Noah’s dread-instilling gaze. Instinctively, Ishii gripped his sword, unlike the others who retreated in fear. Noah’s gaze turned intrigue when he saw this, even more so when he could subtly see small sharp objects begin to wrap around the girl from before.

He had finally noticed that these two also had the same type of outfit as him. Granted that they had more items to loot since they were groups and that meant more chest. They still had to fight a decent amount to receive a high enough tier chest to obtain it.

After being intrigued by the two people’s reaction, he unknowingly had a smile. It was nice to meet people with the mentality of surviving and the courage to back it up.

He again observed Isshi, he was clearly shorter than him. Ishii was about 5’9’’ tall and didn’t appear very muscular underneath his gear. However Noah could tell that the person was very experienced at least using the sword so he knew that even with Ishii’s small statue, he was definitely in shape. Ishii’s long black hair, tied back in a bun, added to his enigmatic aura. Noah couldn’t help but imagine that with the right armor, Ishii could easily pass for a samurai,

Ishii felt a chill run down his spine as he realized the implications of his actions. Noah had effortlessly dispatched the horde of zombies on his own, and the two menacing monsters behind him seemed to exude an even greater threat than anything Ishii had faced before.

Despite his own strength and martial prowess, Ishii knew that it could only take him so far in this dangerous world. Nervously, he began to release his grip on his sword and attempted to muster a smile in response to Noah’s demeanor. Although Noah’s expression remained unchanged, Ishii couldn’t help but notice the creatures behind him had ceased their eating and were now fixated on their direction.

In that moment, Ishii wished he could turn back time. He had thought everything was going well, or as well as they could considering the circumstances, but that voice had stirred up worry within him. Worried him for what they would have to start encountering towards the future, especially if they didn’t somehow prove ’something’ to the voice before.

’I almost messed everything up...’ Ishii muttered to himself in frustration, realizing the gravity of his actions. As he contemplated, he waved off the people behind him, signaling for them to stand down in an attempt to salvage the situation and make a good impression.

"I guess you want to talk about teaming up, right?" Noah initiated the conversation after finally organizing everything in his bag, setting aside the other bow he had retrieved. The sheer size of the object pulled out from his bag didn’t escape everyone’s notice, further solidifying Ishii’s conviction that Noah was someone worth following. He was prepared to relinquish his leadership....no, he would gladly give up his leadership to him without hesitation.

"Ye-yes that’s right!" Ishii eagerly confirmed. "We won’t hold you back either if that worries you. We all want to leave this place, and we feel that with you, it would be easier to achieve that together."

"We can even share our loot with you!" Ishii blurted out the last part loudly, causing looks of astonishment from the people behind him, particularly from the girl controlling the daggers in the air. She knew firsthand how valuable the drops were and couldn’t believe Ishii was offering such a significant incentive to a stranger who exuded an aura of danger, even more so than the monsters they had faced thus far.

However, Ishii felt compelled to speak up. He could sense from Noah’s impassive gaze that he wasn’t even considering allowing them to follow. Ishii hoped to sway Noah’s decision, praying that Noah wasn’t the type to make immoral demands, such as offering the girls’ bodies in exchange.

Noah was taken aback by Ishii’s suggestion. The idea was certainly enticing, but there were a couple of problems.

’Even if I could get their loot, I would still need them to hold it or get myself a base and would have to rely on someone to guard it. I would also have to deal with the leeches that are still in the building...’ Once he thought up to this, he had already made up his mind, he soon slung his bag over his shoulder and walked to grab his sword.

The group watched him anxiously in silence before he looked towards them again.

"You make a good deal, but I’m better off on my own." Noah declared. Ishii and his group were genuinely surprised by his refusal. Some speculated that he was simply too arrogant, but Ishii didn’t concern himself with their assumptions. If anything, he felt disappointed that even their loot wasn’t enough to sway Noah’s decision to let them join.

However, Noah left them with a glimmer of hope. "If you want to be in a group so badly, head to the cafeteria. There’s a large group there that may suit you, well, some of them at least." His mind drifted to the likes of Mark, Neal, and Regina—annoying individuals whom he had encountered before. Initially, Noah had intended to disregard the progress of others entirely, but his perspective had shifted after the words he had heard earlier. He wouldn’t take the godly being words lightly.

He realized that humans needed to contribute their own efforts, and if they could only do so by banding together, then he could at least steer them in the right direction.

"Wait! What’s your name?" Ishii called out to Noah’s retreating figure. Noah had always been a background figure in school, and with his recent mental and physical transformations, it was nearly impossible for anyone to recognize him without regular interactions. Contrary to Ishii’s expectations, Noah still provided his name, even though he came off a bit arrogant.

Ishii repeated the name a few times, he vowed to commit Noah to memory as a reminder that he needs to work harder.

They planned to regroup in the building to inform everyone of their next goal and strategize their next steps. However, when they glanced back at Noah out of curiosity, they witnessed something unsettling.

Noah approached the bodies of the two zombies he had killed earlier and retrieved his dagger to extract their hearts. Wanting to avoid a struggle, he utilized his ability to transfer ten percent of Fenrir’s strength to himself.

With a swift, practiced motion, he plunged the dagger into the chest of the nearest zombie, his muscles tensing as he exerted just enough force to pierce through flesh and bone. Blood spurted from the wound, staining his hands and the ground below in a gruesome display. The zombie’s heart proved as enticing as the human heart he had consumed before, but this time, Noah was more mindful of his actions, striving to control his urges.

Noah didn’t spare a second thought for the prying eyes observing him as he discovered the pearl hidden within the non-beating sac. The whispers behind him intensified as he consumed the pearls, but his focus remained on the notifications buzzing in his mind. The sensation had begun even before he pried open the heart, and Noah was certain it had something to do with Fenrir leveling up.

’I knew that this was possible, but I’m confused.....Why am I compatible with a zombie and not a human? Does it have something to do with that title? Or maybe it’s the ring...But atleast that means I can abuse this! Lets get more of those pearl thingys or should I just call them cores? It doesn’t matter, we can check my stats afterwards, oh man I’m getting excited.’

Even in his excitement, Noah didn’t forget to check on Fenrir’s stats so he could distribute his five points.

Noah first used Fenrir’s points, adding three to his agility so next time he levels up he would obtain his perk for reaching 50, while spending the remaining two on his strength. His ’decree of equivalent exchange’ skill can only be used with Fenrir and what he felt the most he would need to exchange with was Fenrir’s strength so he decided to focus on that attribute for now.

However, as he scrutinized the stats, several concerns weighed on his mind, causing inner turmoil. ’I’ve seen Fenrir eat zombies and humans whole before, he should be considered a zombie right? Why aren’t those core-like things affecting him? Is it because his race is a werewolf and not a zombie? No...Even I don’t have zombies included in my race. But where am I supposed to find werewolves then to help increase his skills faster?

’And at this rate he will completely overshadow Arachne...Hopefully when I ’pass my limit’ I’ll be able to find a way to help her grow stronger...’

Noah mused inwardly. His thoughts of becoming stronger brought his attention back to his present acts. He scanned the corpses of the zombies, a glint appearing in his eyes before a crazed smile spread across his face.

Soon, almost everyone in the library became spectators to Noah’s grim performance, watching in horror as he darted from zombie to zombie, extracting their hearts. Each moment became more disturbing than the last. Initially curious about his actions, some observers noticed Noah retrieving a stone-like object from the hearts. "What’s special about the stones?" they whispered amongst themselves.

Their curiosity turned to a mix of disgust, fear, and morbid fascination when they saw Noah swallow the blood-covered stones along with whatever else was inside the hearts. The idea of tasting human or zombie blood and innards was nauseating, heightened by the fear of infection. "Did he just commit suicide?" they wondered aloud, shaken by Noah’s unsettling behavior.

As they watched in horror, their disbelief turned to outright shock when they witnessed Noah take a bite from one of the hearts he had removed. Some of the women screamed in terror, while others vomited at the grotesque sight.

Doubt crept into their minds as they questioned whether Noah was truly human or if something was seriously wrong with him mentally. Minutes passed, and the disturbing cycle repeated itself. Ishii felt a strong urge to intervene and stop Noah before he traumatized everyone further. Not to mention, he was afraid that Noah would really turn if he continued to ingest the zombie’s blood. The thought of witnessing the person he had made as his goal behaving in such a repulsive manner filled him with conflicting emotions.

’Is he so strong because he’s been doing this the whole time? Should we be doing the same thing?’ He really wished that wasn’t the case. However, as he watched Noah eagerly move from corpse to corpse, that thought was growing stronger in time.

"HahaHA! Now let’s see my gains!" Noah exclaimed, unable to contain his excitement any longer. Still on one knee after extracting the last core, he eagerly checked his stats, feeling a tingling sensation in his mind signaling notifications. He couldn’t wait to see the benefits of his actions.

[You have consumed.....]x47 expecting to see the plethora of text, Noah meticulously scrolled through the long list of repetitive notifications. He had hoped that what he did would be achievement worthy, or possibly an upgrade in his zombie’s bloodline trait. He first noticed his mana being completely full, his excitement growing after seeing one potential benefit. However, by the time he reached the end of the messages, he realized that he was unable to obtain anything else.

Noah felt the need to organize his thoughts and address his concerns methodically, starting from the top. However, he found it difficult to push aside the looming question mark over his race.

"I knew it was gonna happen after I found out I was incompatible with that person’s stone....but why is it confused about my race now?"
