Chapter 176: Teardrop Crystal

Since Visha had promised, she would do her best.

What do you need? Visha asked the system

[The seed-spine, the very reason the Verdant Maw is the way it is. The teardrop at the top of the ceiling.]

Visha’s eyes widened when she heard what it wanted. Her head shot towards the slowly rotating object. She had no time to revel in the joyous newness of the bond they were feeling. There was already a new task for her to do. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Uri and Xeno immediately felt the shock from Visha. Their eyes turned in the same direction as hers.

"What is it?" Xeno asked.

Visha turned to them and licked her lips. The light that filled the chamber suddenly seemed too bright. She wondered to herself, if she took it, would something happen in the maw? Would they be safe?

She didn’t trust herself to speak, so she pointed to the teardrop crystal instead.

"You need it?" Uri questioned. Visha nodded frantically.

"Wait..." she called out. She saw the moment Xeno lunged.

The ceiling was tall; it was unlikely they would be able to reach it. What Xeno did was to run to the wall and use his claws to help him walk along the wall. This was a skill he never dreamed of having, but after his individual trial, he noticed different things about his body, so he gave it a try.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to reach it before a strike of energy hit him, sending him falling back to the ground. Uri caught him before he hit the ground. He chuckled, seeing the crispy tiger.

Visha raised an eyebrow. She felt Uri appeared more easygoing now, but she did not dwell on it.

After catching Xeno, Uri’s gaze went to the crystal on the ceiling, then back at Visha. "Is there a reason we need it?"

"According to the system, that’s the thing causing the plants to act like this. And based on what we know from before, I’m assuming this has something to do with the First Beast," Visha said.

"You mean-," Uri did not complete the sentence.

If it was as they thought. The forbidden zones were parts of the First Beast, according to the lore. That seed was, according to the lore, the stomach of the First Beast. But why would the system want it?

Then she remembered what Chi said before they left. Did the system have something to do with the First Beast? Then why did it attach itself to her?

Visha regretted saying yes to the system at this moment. She really had gotten herself into trouble.

"The system wants it?" came Xeno’s voice.

"Yes," Visha sighed. Her temples were throbbing. For the nth time, she asked herself what she had gotten into. She hadn’t expected the system to want something easy to get, but why this?

Neither Visha, Uri, nor Xeno knew what to say. Xeno was almost roasted by the little crystal. If Visha tried to get it, would the same happen to her?

"How about we try punching a hole in the ceiling?" Xeno asked, not at all convinced even though he made the suggestion.

Visha rolled her eyes at him. You don’t believe your own suggestion. Who are you trying to fool?

Visha decided to ask the system. If it gave the task there must be a way for them to get the crystal.

How are we supposed to get it? Xeno just tried and almost killed himself.

[Use the abilities given in the trial.]

Abilities? Visha questioned whether she had gotten any abilities. Maybe she hadn’t but they did. Xeno seemed confident when he walked on the wall just moments ago. Maybe there was something she didn’t know.

"Did both of you get abilities from your trials?"

"I did," Uri replied.

"So did I." Xeno answered.

Visha pouted when she heard this. Why didn’t she get an ability?

Uri seeing her pout smiled and said, "You have always had abilities. Do you really need more?"

"Yes!" Visha answered affirmatively. "Who wouldn’t want to make themselves stronger or protect the people they love?"

"Alright. Maybe next time," he conforted. "So, why are you asking about the abilites?"

"The system said to use our abilities to get the crystal down."

"Really?" Xeno eyes shone when he heard that. "That means my idea was right."

Visha heard him and wondered briefly if the trials did more than give abilities. Uri is so eaygoing, and Xeno is like a big child, even more so than usual. she herself hasn’t yet taken note of her changes.

"You got the power to punch things?" Visha asked deadpan.

"Of course not. I, my beautiful mate, am a king. And any good king has a great roar," Xeno said smugly.

"Roar?" Visha queried.

Xeno nodded, not in a hurry to demonstrate.

"What about you?" she asked Uri.

"My skill...I am not sure how I could use it obtain the crystal," Uri answered. "It is a skill of devouring."

"Devouring?!" Visha shouted. Then she turned to Xeno, teasingly, "His skill sounds better than yours."

Xeno pouted.

"Be serious. Both of you," Uri admonished. "We need to figure out how to get that crystal."

"How about we try using our skills individually first? Maybe one of them can get the crytsal down?" said Visha.

Xeno, who had been eager to try was the first to go.

"Remember don’t do too much," said Visha.

Xeno had only used it during the trial but he had a good grasp of what it could do. When he started roaring, the sanctum shook, dust fell, but the crystal, didn’t budge in the slightest.

At least this time, it didn’t try to attack him.

Next, Uri tired. His devouring current touched the crystal and it shook. They could see it turning towards Uri. Visha smiled thinking it might be working. But no sooner had it moved towards Uri than it began to spin wildly.

Uri had to stop using his skill because instead of him devouring, he felt as though he was being devoured.

Visha was the last to try. She used the only ability she had that could reach the crystal. The rite of vitality. As soon as it touched the crystal, the chamber flashed with a blinding light. Visha had to stop using the rite. And as soon as she did, the light dimmed.

The crystal on the other hand, started shining like a star in the sky.

Well, that was a disaster.

Neither of their abilities were able to get the crystal down. They brainstormed different way to deal with it when Uri said, "Why not try together?"

Visha and Xeno looked at him confused. "This place is a test of our bond. Why not use all three of our abilities to bring the crystal down? We can try wrapping it with energy from all three of us."

"Instead of letting the energy flow outward, why not try and find a way to get the energy to come to us?"

The idea was so obvious that Visha couldn’t understand why they hadn’t thought of it before.

The vital energy manuals.

The system rewarded them as soon as they finished the trials. Did it just want her to learn from the manuals and get the crystals for it?
