Chapter 129: Returning to the pack

The return to the pack was more eventful than expected.

Almost as soon as they left the Fox tribe territory, one of the slaves decided that drowning would be better than following Visha and her group to the caldera. Luckily, they had anticipated this. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

The trio saw how broken some of these people had looked and knew that many of them would not be willing to live like slaves. They do not know what they encountered during their time at the Fox tribe; however, they knew it would not be anything good.

On their travels, they could only bind the slaves together to stop them from taking any drastic measures. It was also at this time that they wondered if it would be best to make their own raft. Since they had the technology, they should make it work in their favour.

This is also because they noticed the raft of the River Clan was not capable of carrying many people. Visha knew that in the future, if they were to continue trading, it would not be viable to travel with the River Clan at all times. They did not want to wear out their welcome.

Uri suggested as much when he spoke with the trade leader of the River Clan. They could follow the routes with the River Clan to visit other tribes. When they knew the routes, they could visit on their own. The River Clan showed no objection.

As such, this would be their last time travelling on the same raft as the River Clan.

The journey to the caldera wasn’t as swift as it normally was. Even bound together, they found ways to make trouble. When they finally arrived at the caldera, they were exhausted.

When the gates were opened, the pack clearly saw the people on the cart. They were unkempt and dirty. They looked as if they had been through a war. Rather than the usual joy, they showed when Visha, Uri, and Xeno returned. The place was filled with silence.

They watched the trio walk past, ordering the closing of the gate. They followed, helping to push the cart with the people in it. The slaves in the cart cautiously looked around the place they had been taken. They could see that the people who bought them were actually a small group.

The number of people in the pack was almost equivalent to the number of slaves they bought. They were even more confused when they saw the concern on the faces of the people walking around the cart. They had been in the Fox tribe for some time. The stories they had heard and the treatment they received made them prepare for the worst if they were bought.

"Take them down and get them washed up," Xeno’s voice came as they stopped in the square.

The pack members took the bewildered people away, eager to get them ready. It was just after midday. The trio was tired; however, they knew they couldn’t rest. While the slaves were being washed, they also went to wash off. They nodded to Krag and Chi, who were standing not far away, watching everything.

Returning to the square, the twelve people had been washed. They were wearing new clothes. Besides the two ’prized’ slaves, all the others had varying cuts, slashes, and burns that would take a long time to heal. Five of the slaves were half-shifted people. Kit stared at them, his eyes wide.

He didn’t approach them, only touched his own ears. He still remembered when he was half-shifted. He remembered the pill Visha had given him that allowed him to shift. He turned to look at Visha, who was walking towards the square with Uri and Xeno.

His eyes sparkled when she saw him. He still remembered what Visha had told him that day. He didn’t expect to see more people like him. Now, he was wondering if he could do what she said one day. Even though he was young, he hadn’t told anyone what he and Visha talked about.

And touching his ears now, while looking at the people in front of him, he wondered if he could let his ears come. The pill Visha had given him allowed him to shift completely, but it also allowed him to go back to his half-shifted state.

Visha watched Kit watching the half shifters. She saw him touching his ears. She knew what he was thinking about. She herself was in awe when the system gave her the pill. It was the first and last time it had given her something like that. When she got the notice for the alchemy mission while they were at the River Clan, she knew there was more to learn, both about the system and about the Beast Continent.

Since the system could give such a pill, it could give it again. Maybe she could even create it herself.

Entering the square, she took note of each of them. She knew it would take time for them to accept the fact that they would not be slaves.

"We have no intention of treating you like slaves," Visha said, standing in front of them. "I know you won’t believe it, but it is the truth."

They stood blank-faced.

"What we want is for you to be a member of our pack. We hope you can treat this place as your home. We aren’t looking for slaves. We are looking for people who can help us develop."

She turned to look at Nyx. After being branded, she fainted. Later, when she woke up, she was once again docile. The system mentioned her by name, so there must be something special about her. "I want you especially to stay."

Nyx’s eyes focused on Visha. There was something predatory about it. Yet, at the same time, there was confusion in her eyes. Visha made her statement and moved on.

She turned to the others, "If you choose to stay with us, you will forever be a part of the pack. We do not tolerate betrayal. We reward loyalty. We treat each other as family. We respect the rules." She pointed to the large stone slab where the rules were written.

She gestured to Uri and Xeno, "These are your leaders, Uri and Xeno. I am your priestess. My name is Visha. Should you choose to join us, our pack will welcome you with open arms. We will have a formal ceremony to make you part of the pack. I will also remove the brands from your body. The choice is yours."

She had Willa and the other lead them to a house to stay the night. They would make their choice in the morning.

When everyone had left, Krag, Chi, Uri, Xeno, and Visha sat in the square.

Krag and Chi would report on what happened in the pack while they were gone.
