Beastmaster King-Chapter 33 - The Devil’s Training

The Grass-attribute demon cat was an excellent opponent, perfect for Captain Doofus’ special training. A grudge was a strong source of motivation.

Lu Ran had told Fang Lan that he would be staying in Limitless City for a while to train Captain Doofus and wouldn’t be returning to Green Sea City. While teleporting between the two cities required crystal coins, the truth was that Lu Ran was counting on Fang Lan to handle the pressure from his godparents once again.

He lay on the bed in his private room, planning to rest for a while, and rubbed his temples. What would be the best way to level up Captain Doofus?

First, there were the five major ways to use energy: Infusion, Projection, Acceleration, Compression, and Formation.

Captain Doofus was proficient in the first two. He could even infuse energy into external objects. For infusion, only a regular practice routine was needed. It could be combined with physical and reaction training.

In recent battles, Lu Ran observed that when Captain Doofus infused wind energy into his body, he actually became as swift as the wind—though those speeds were downright reckless. Any terrain obstacles forced him to slow down. Therefore, the infusion training needed to focus on enhancing agility while Captain Doofus was in wind-speed mode.

As for Projection, Captain Doofus had just learned how to use sword qi and Lu Ran was able to observe several drawbacks.

First, the energy consumption was too high. This was inevitable; once projected, energy naturally decayed. Without a large initial burst, the projection would quickly dissipate entirely.

This could only be addressed by improving Captain Doofus’ overall level or improving the skill level itself.

Second, the attack was too inflexible since it only affected a straight line.

The sword qi projection took the form of a crescent-shaped white wind blade about a meter long. Upon release, the torrent of air surrounding the blade caused slight AOE damage, though not significant. While the blade's speed wasn’t sluggish, the time it took to project and travel through the air made the attack relatively easy to dodge.

It could hit slower beasts like elephants, but it wouldn’t be reliable against agile creatures like cats, especially from a distance. It would likely be completely ineffective against flying beasts.

Lu Ran considered two possible options.

The first was to enhance Captain Doofus’ proficiency in Projection. Just as Infusion had higher-level techniques, so too did Projection. The next level of Projection was controlling the projection away from the body.

In other words, at this higher level, Captain Doofus would be able to manipulate the sword qi projection’s flight trajectory after launching it, allowing it to change direction mid-air and significantly enhance accuracy. It would essentially function like a sword-control technique!

However, this was quite challenging. The Basic Beastmaster Manual only briefly mentioned it without any detailed explanation, so it clearly wasn’t considered "basic."

The other idea Lu Ran had was to have Captain Doofus learn energy acceleration. With it, the process of gathering and focusing sword qi would become almost instantaneous. Also, Captain Doofus would have almost no cooldown and would be able to rapidly fire two or three sword projections consecutively.

The increased firepower would more effectively suppress the enemy and reduce their chances of evading his techniques, though it would consume more energy.

The short-term training goals will focus on agility and energy acceleration. Once Captain Doofus masters energy acceleration, we’ll train his sword projection accuracy by having him hit throwing stones in mid-air to give it moving targets.

Lu Ran gradually drifted off to sleep. Captain Doofus had long since fallen asleep after expending considerable energy.

Lu Ran opened his eyes. Captain Doofus was jumping around with its tongue out. Its blue eyes were full of energy.

Lu Ran then put on a smile.

There might be some backlash, but we have a fully charged Divine Deer Pendant to mitigate it. Focus on the sensations, and with your level of comprehension, you should be able to grasp it quickly."

"Woof?"

Captain Doofus’ eyes lit upon hearing that there was a shortcut, and nodded furiously. He could handle the backlash! From his previous experiences, his body told him to have no fear. There was healing available on hand as well.

His Captain Lu was so thoughtful and knew that a husky’s desire for revenge wouldn’t wane after ten years. Captain Doofus loved shortcuts.

"Alright, let's try it."

Lu Ran smiled. He had thoroughly read the Overflow Fruit's description and reviews. If a low-level familiar consumed it, they would need to rest for at least half a month to a month, even with standard herbal remedies. The side effects made it like a forbidden fruit.

Perhaps with the Divine Deer Pendant, this extreme training could bring some surprises.

Lu Ran looked back at him and took out the Overflow Fruit. It was entirely pink, like a sakura petal transformed into a fruit. It was beautiful, but beneath its vibrant exterior lay extreme energy.

In the wild, animals that ate this fruit would surely die. Although it would temporarily increase their strength, they would perish from their injuries without proper treatment. Only Beastmasters’ familiars could use this fruit to boost power.

"Here."

Lu Ran tossed the Overflow Fruit at Captain Doofus.

Captain Doofus caught it in his mouth, ready to swallow.

"Stop! Chew it slowly," Lu Ran yelled like a parent scolding a child.

This guy had apparently forgotten that he nearly choked on a Wind fruit last time. Captain Doofus was still so eager to swallow things in one bite.

Even if the fruit looks tasty, can’t Captain Doofus slow down a little?

Lu Ran didn’t want other people to know that his familiar choked to death.

Captain Doofus whimpered but ultimately complied.

Then...

Lu Ran took out the Divine Deer Pendant, ready to use it.

Captain Doofus stood still, waiting for its body to change.

Rather, Captain Doofus felt wonderful. The power was amazing. The energy overload circulated endlessly through his body, boosting his attack, defense, and speed. However, he needed somewhere to release it. Where? It was about to lose control.

He looked at Lu Ran. Surely Lu Ran wouldn't be its training partner again, right?

"Um... do you want to kill me?"

Lu Ran looked around.

"This is a rented training realm, so it should have self-repair. You can go to town on it."

Captain Doofus’ eyes lit up.

It unleashed its primal instincts, howling at the sky.

Soon, the place was completely destroyed. Cheap training realms were cheap. It now resembled a battlefield.

However, Captain Doofus hadn’t had enough. Bloodlust still pumped through its veins. No enemies? The training realm itself was the enemy!

Captain Doofus was on a complete rampage.

Lu Ran watched the terrifying display of power and thought, If Captain Doofus had the Cascading Wind Sword in this state, it might have stood a chance against the Grass Demon Cat.

Captain Doofus only grew more excited, but soon, Lu Ran noticed something wrong.

His fears when Captain Doofus’s eyes had turned red became true. Captain Doofus’ sanity seemed to slip away, replaced only by a desire to slaughter. Lu Ran’s heart sank.

Then came an excruciating pain. The stabbing sensation pierced through its entire body and organs, down to its very bones.

Captain Doofus’ clear eyes filled with terror as it howled in agony. It hurt so much! What kind of devil training was this!?

Weakness overtook it. After a few wobbles, it slumped to the ground, looking pitifully at its Captain Lu.

"I told you, the backlash is intense..."

Lu Ran quickly used the Divine Deer Pendant he had prepared in advance to heal Captain Doofus. But as he did so, something unexpected happened.

Captain Doofus’ contract card had another change.
