Beast World: A Fragile Beauty Blessed with Many Children-Chapter 74 - 73: You’re Using It Quite Smoothly, Aren’t You?
Updates on the Beast Tide were teleported in every Beast Hour. Many High-level, long-range combat Beastmen, working with scouting Teleportation-ability Beastmen and Flying Beasts, followed Gong You’s lead to preemptively cull the High-Level Frenzied Fierce Beasts from the horde.
The vast Beast Tide continued to mass. It wasn’t just composed of beasts on the ground; the sky was filled with countless flying Fierce Beasts, a dense, dark swarm that blotted out the sun.
The pressure they exerted was immense. Besides culling the High-Level Frenzied Fierce Beasts, Gong You also aimed his Crossbow at the flying ones. Yet even as he used his Time Law to kill them relentlessly, his kills were but a drop in the ocean compared to the entire horde.
They had plenty of Crystal Cores stored in their spatial inventory. Riding a White-beaked Eagle Beastman, Gong You flew alongside the Beast Tide, shooting rapidly as he moved.
The Beastmen felt as if time was running out. Two days passed in a flash. They had already depleted and recovered their Spiritual Power four or five times, and the defensive fortifications around Puchang City were now nearly complete.
An area of barren land had previously been cleared around the Beast City, but now towering trees had been raised both inside and outside the walls. As a result, Flying Beasts would no longer have any advantage in an assault on the city...
Si Shuo remained on the platform for two days. Once the plaza was filled with Beast Skin Bags, she stopped pulling more out, maintaining the appearance of someone playing chess and chatting with the Beast God. ’But inwardly, she was fraught with anxiety for Gong You, Ji Liang, and the others.’
Fortunately, she had paid a hefty fee to watch a live feed through the system. This allowed her to monitor her Beast Husbands’ safety while also getting a full overview of the Beast Tide.
Amid everyone’s nervous anticipation, the Beast Tide finally reached the first line of defense!
In addition to the various fortifications, High-level, long-range Beastmen were waiting there. Alongside them stood scouting Beastmen with the Teleportation Ability, ready to open an escape portal at a moment’s notice.
Even through the screen, Si Shuo could feel the terror of the Beast Tide. It was like a surging landslide, and a single glance was enough to make one’s legs go weak with the instinctive urge to turn and flee.
Fortunately, the Beastmen were experienced fighters. Their gazes were resolute as they calmly awaited the Beast Tide’s arrival.
The Beastmen had constructed the first line of defense with exceptional care. The thick stone walls, sunk deep into the earth, were lined with layers of poison-coated metal spikes.
The harder the Frenzied Fierce Beasts slammed into the wall, the deeper the spikes plunged into their flesh. As the poison circulated through their bloodstream, an entire row of them vanished on the spot. Unfazed, the next row of red-eyed beasts charged forward to meet the same fate.
The first wall only held for five waves before it came crashing down. The subsequent walls could only endure for six or seven waves each.
Most of the Beastmen possessed earth and wood-type superpowers, so the walls they constructed were long and thick. There were ten such walls in total!
Beyond the walls lay a labyrinth, its dense walls also studded with Poisoned Steel Nails. The Beastmen stood guard outside the entrance, in an area they had filled with traps.
The maze was designed like a reverse funnel. Its entrance was exceptionally wide, swallowing nearly eighty percent of the main horde. The number of passages increased deeper inside, performing an initial triage on the Frenzied Fierce Beasts.
The walls of this labyrinth were also incredibly thick, equivalent to five or six of the previous defensive walls combined!
Moreover, over the past two days, Si Shuo had also selected several types of plants with calming, pacifying, and stupefying properties.
The females gathered a portion, while the Wood Element Beastmen used their abilities to rapidly grow more. The plants were then ground into a powder, which Flying Beasts followed the horde to spray from above.
The Frenzied Fierce Beasts couldn’t build up any speed in the winding labyrinth, and they shoved forward irritably, crowding one another.
Unlike a traditional labyrinth with a single exit, every path in this one led to an outlet. This prevented any of the Fierce Beasts from getting hopelessly trapped inside.
As the beasts were culled by the Poisoned Steel Nails, the number of bags in Si Shuo’s temporary spatial storage surged. The Beast Tide had visibly diminished by a full ten percent!
The Fierce Beasts that emerged from the labyrinth’s exits then fell into water pits laced with various poisons. After that, they trod across more Poisoned Steel Nails, entered yet another maze, and finally ran up against another defensive wall.
After they breached the wall and regrouped, they trampled over a field covered in vines, only to be roasted by fire...
All the while, High-level Beastmen launched ranged attacks from the sidelines. When the Beast Tide drew near, they would retreat with the scouting Teleportation Beastmen to the next defensive line to lie in wait.
By the time the Beast Tide had broken through three or four of these defensive lines to reach the city itself, its numbers had been reduced by nearly sixty percent. Even so, what remained was equivalent to four or five medium-sized Beast Tides.
The defenses outside the city proper were not constrained by the number of scouting Teleportation Beastmen available. They were built using the strength of nearly the entire city’s population. The successive labyrinths left the Frenzied Fierce Beasts utterly disoriented. Combined with the sprayed plant powder, the red glow even began to fade from the eyes of some Fierce Beasts.
By the time the Fierce Beasts passed through the layers of obstacles and finally reached the city walls, the Beastmen were already cracking their knuckles in anticipation.
Ji Liang and her other three Beast Husbands took turns guarding Si Shuo. The three who were off-duty would join the fray, culling Fierce Beasts to stockpile Beast Skins and Crystal Stones for their female.
When the last Frenzied Fierce Beast was slain, everyone felt as if they were in a dream. If the Beastmen who had followed the horde’s advance hadn’t witnessed it firsthand, who could have imagined it? A Beast Tide so immense that it had inspired a desperate, terrifying urge to flee had been completely and systematically annihilated!
The crowd, still buzzing with energy and feeling the battle had ended too soon, gathered in the plaza before the Beast God Statue. Their gazes were fixed fanatically on Si Shuo and her companions.
Zhi Le, Ji Liang, Xu Chi, and Gong You also stared ardently at their little female.
Si Shuo gave a slight cough. Standing on the high platform and holding a Purple Sound Spirit Shell that amplified her voice, she spoke with a solemn expression.
"Although we have won this battle and repelled the Beast Tide, the Beast God expended a great deal of his Divine Power to save Puchang City and to collect and purify the Fierce Beasts. We do not know how long it will take for him to recover."
"The Beast God was able to help us this time, but he will not be able to intervene a second time!"
"Without his divine aid, no matter how many defenses we build, the corpses of the Fierce Beasts would simply pile up. Our walls, pits, vine fields, and even the labyrinths—all of it would be rendered useless."
"Therefore, we cannot afford to be complacent and rely on luck. We must remember that the Spring Hunt is the path to balance that our ancestors discovered through countless trials of blood and tears!"
The Beastmen nodded emphatically. The joy of their victory was followed by a profound sense of relief and lingering fear. If the Beast God had not intervened to save Puchang City, all that would have awaited them was a city of blood.
Si Shuo only mentioned these two points. ’They’ve learned a harsh lesson this time,’ she thought, ’and won’t dare to blindly copy others again.’
’The development of any civilization must be advanced one step at a time. A reckless advance that ignores one’s own situation doesn’t lead to glory and honor; it can very well lead to annihilation.’
"Alright, now it’s time to distribute rewards based on merit!" Si Shuo announced, her tone suddenly cheerful. "Our revered Beast God has already marked each bag with the name of the one who made the kill, and I will now hand them out one by one."
At this, the Beastmen erupted in cheers and excitement.
The Beast God was silent for a long moment. "Si Shuo, Divine Female," he said, "you use my name quite freely, don’t you?"
Si Shuo chuckled lightly. "Beast God, Puchang City enshrines your statue, you know. They are your believers. Could you truly bear to watch Puchang City be annihilated?"
"If I hadn’t flown your banner, the Beastmen would never have believed in me. I was simply the fox borrowing the tiger’s might. Besides, this only roots you even deeper in the hearts of your Beastman subjects!"
