Beast Taming: Slaughter Atlas-Chapter 478 - 424: Mess Left Behind
At noon, Chu Chen responded to the summons and arrived at Zhang Yuyan’s tent.
"Congratulations, we’ve reached the same level so quickly." Zhang Yuyan joked with a smile.
Hearing this, Chu Chen replied with a smile, "This is all thanks to Grand Commander Zhang’s great leadership."
After exchanging a few jokes, Zhang Yuyan finally got the conversation back on track.
"Lord Bai has already sent your official seal and uniform here. You can assume your post tomorrow." With that, she took out a tray from her Spatial Ring.
Seeing this, Chu Chen quickly took it over. On the tray was a neatly folded set of silver armor with a fist-sized official seal on top.
Chu Chen didn’t look at them closely and flipped them into his Spatial Ring without a second thought.
He wasn’t interested in becoming an official; he was here only for the battle, to allow his Guardian Beast to grow rapidly.
"You’ll assume your position tomorrow. Is there anything you need my help with?" Zhang Yuyan asked with a smile.
"Actually, yes. I should take some familiar people with me this time, preferably strong ones, especially since all the commanders under Yan Xiang have been executed by me."
Hearing this, Zhang Yuyan burst out laughing and immediately quipped, "Who can you blame? It’s all your own doing."
Chu Chen sighed helplessly and said, "Sigh! I didn’t expect this mess would fall on me."
"Alright, enough teasing. Take all your people with you."
"That’s generous." Chu Chen said with pretended politeness, cupping his hands in thanks.
Meanwhile, back at his home in Celestial Star City, a violent cough echoed from Father Chu’s bedroom.
Hearing the noise, Mrs. Chu hurried in to check, finding Father Chu curled up on the bed, his face extremely pale.
"What’s happened to you?" Mrs. Chu asked with concern.
Father Chu waved his hand and replied, "It’s nothing, probably just caught a cold accidentally. I’ll be fine after some rest."
Upon hearing this, Mrs. Chu frowned and said, "You’re a Great Soul Master; how could you catch a cold? Let’s go to the hospital."
"I’m really fine. Just need a couple of days to rest."
Outside the villa, Zhu Dashan had witnessed it all. Father Chu’s condition seemed far worse than a simple cold, and it wasn’t likely to be simple.
Lord Divine Son sent him here, showing great trust, and if he failed, he would be too ashamed to face his lord.
Thinking of this, Zhu Dashan dared not linger and immediately utilized his connections to investigate the matter.
The next day, Chu Chen led Li Tie Niu and others to their appointment in the Second Battle Group of the Third Army.
Li Tie Niu and the others flattered while walking beside Chu Chen, "Commander Chu is really something, thinking of us even after promotion."
"Yeah, we’re lucky to have someone to uplift us as well."
"Li Jun, if you can speak well, say more; if not, shut your filthy mouth."
"Indeed, this guy is indirectly calling us good-for-nothing."
Chu Chen sighed helplessly at their banter. The army camp was full of rough men; they hardly knew how to flatter.
Unable to listen any longer, he quickly interrupted, "Alright, stop the flattery and talk about your situations. You should all be familiar with the condition of our Second Battle Group. To say it is in complete disarray isn’t an exaggeration."
Hearing this, Li Tie Niu seemed to realize something and quickly asked in a low voice, "Grand Commander, are you intending to promote us?"
Chu Chen didn’t hide his intentions and nodded with satisfaction, "Tie Niu, you’re quite perceptive. I do intend to promote you, but our army has always respected strength. If you want to be a commander, you must show your capabilities."
Everyone was overjoyed upon hearing this, but Tie Niu poured cold water over their excitement.
"Aren’t you celebrating too early? We’re up against quite a number of competitors for the commander positions."
Upon hearing this, everyone’s expressions turned solemn.
The Second Battle Group had indeed suffered heavy losses, but there were still nearly a hundred captains.
Though about half remained, they still faced fifty competitors.
Seeing this, Chu Chen couldn’t help sighing, fully aware of the competitive pressure.
He had the authority to directly appoint ten as commanders, but doing so would cause dissatisfaction, resulting in soldiers becoming estranged, and the Second Battle Group would become a laughingstock.
"Alright, don’t get disheartened. Even having this opportunity is rare. If you want to be a commander, show your strength."
Everyone agreed, realizing their desire had been greedy.
The promotion criteria within the Cyan Dragon Army were based on military merit, and positions only became available when others retired or were sacrificed.
Now, ten positions had opened up based solely on strength, not military merit. For Li Tie Niu and others, it was a rare opportunity.
Soon, Chu Chen and the others arrived at the Second Battle Group.
The training field was nearly empty, with only a few people training their Guardian Beasts.
Seeing this, Chu Chen frowned discontentedly and went straight to the training field, calling over a somewhat thin youth.
"What’s your name?" Chu Chen asked with a smile.
The youth quickly saluted and said, "Subordinate Xing Lang greets the Grand Commander."
"No need for that. Let me ask you, why are only a few of you training here? Where are the others?"
Upon hearing this, Xing Lang looked troubled and answered in a low voice, "In last night’s battle, over ninety percent of our troops were killed or wounded. The survivors are mostly injured, and those with unscathed combat power are still in mourning, not yet recovered."
Hearing this, Chu Chen couldn’t help but sigh, lamenting that they should have taken action sooner last night.
Now, as the Grand Commander, he wasn’t even as effective as some of the other commanders.
Feeling indignant at this thought, Chu Chen asked, "How many new soldiers do we have in our group now?"
In a low voice, Xing Lang replied, "Probably around thirty thousand."
Chu Chen furrowed his brows upon hearing this. As Grand Commander, he was responsible for a hundred thousand of the Cyan Dragon Army, yet they could barely muster around forty thousand, most of whom were new recruits.
These thirty thousand new soldiers were not ready for battle soon. They required at least one to three months of rigorous training before they could be fielded.
"Where are these new recruits?"
"They just completed their training and are currently resting in their tents."
Chu Chen pondered, stroking his chin. He had neither enough men nor high morale, and he couldn’t think of a good solution at the moment.
However, progress needed to be gradual. The immediate priority was to select ten commanders, as this would enable the smooth commencement of tasks.
With this in mind, Chu Chen wasted no time and immediately gave a task to Xing Lang.
"Gather everyone at the training field. I have ten commander positions available, and anyone with the required strength can compete for them." Chu Chen said firmly.
Stunned by this announcement, Xing Lang didn’t regain his composure until Chu Chen and the others had walked away. He quickly dashed off toward the other tents to spread the word.
