Chapter 109: Gimme Your Tongue II

Gimme Your Tongue II

True to his gut, the next attack didn’t immediately come as it was clear that the acid dealt damage to the frog’s tongue.

From their brief exchange, Osho judged that the frog was in the higher stages of the Apprentice rank, while the Cobra from before was in the mid stages, creating a fairly sizeable gap. However, the gap wasn’t so vast, and it was small enough for the acid of the Cobra to still harm the frog, hence the current situation.

Moreover, right before it managed to retract its tongue, Osho managed to mark it with his Mana.

The mark didn’t last long, barely a second after the frog managed to retract its tongue as it removed the mark with its own Mana.

However, that brief moment was enough for Osho to ascertain its position. Something he capitalized on as he held his daggers in front of him and pressed the sides of the blades into each other. As he did so, something seemed to build as he pressed more and more, and just as it started to become too much, he released a concentrated bullet of wind that flew at speeds not much inferior to the speed of the tongue from before.

There was the sound of something crashing followed by a pained and enraged croak, and Osho sensed his Mana attach to his target for a brief moment before it was purged again, but before it was, he quickly created a string of Mana and attached it to the frog that was about to be on the move again.

This string served no offensive purpose, and it was nowhere near durable enough to hold or even slow down the frog. But that wasn’t its purpose.

One needed to remember that Osho wasn’t the only one with a Mana sense in his team.

A crystal lance shot out from behind him, following the path of his string as it flew into the forest. A couple more followed after, and Osho could feel the frog attached to his string move around rapidly as it dodged the strikes.

It didn’t take long for the creature to notice the string attached to it and quickly sever it with its Mana. But Osho saw this coming. As such, he’d already created another Mana string before the first one was destroyed.

This second string was quickly destroyed as well, but again, Osho was ahead of the frog and created a new one. He was walking on a thin line, creating new strings faster than the frog could destroy them, and by following these strings with her Mana sense, Ellie could get a feel for the general direction of the frog and attack it with Sugil’s crystals.

This also partly contributed to why Osho was able to out-speed the frog with his Mana threads, as it was devoting some of its attention to dodging Ellie’s attacks.

But this period wouldn’t last.

The frog hadn’t used its tongue yet as it was healing it within its mouth, eliminating the remaining acid and repairing the damaged tissue. As soon as this was complete, it would be able to unleash those devastating strikes once again, making the fight significantly more difficult.

Hence, the group was on a bit of a timer.

They needed to somehow close the distance and engage the frog in close-combat, which it clearly wasn’t great at due to it being adamant in keeping the distance.

Osho could rush forward while the frog was distracted, but he wasn’t too certain about being able to create the threads fast enough if he focused his attention on rushing forward.

Which made what happened next possible due to an additional variable. Blackie.

Osho felt the Frog’s attention falter for a brief moment just as it was about to destroy his latest thread. Moreover, he felt it stagger as it slowed down according to his thread.

As soon as he noticed that, he stopped concentrating Mana in his legs and built a concentrated burst of wind under his feet as he leaned forward and let those two release as he shot forward like a bullet. The world around him blurred for a moment as he passed by the trees and vegetation at a, quite frankly, insane speed.

The burst of speed ended quickly, but it had done its job as Osho found himself a few dozen meters away from an ATV-sized frog with green skin that resembled leaves.

Unlike most frogs, it wasn’t covered in warts but had sleek skin that blended in well with the environment. As soon as he came into its line of sight, he felt himself get stared at with clear murderous intent as the vertical slitted pupils locked onto him.

He noticed two sets of wounds on the creature. One that looked like a puncture wound in its shoulder and a deep gash across one of its hind legs, specifically where a tendon was supposed to be, inhibiting its speed.

As soon as he got close, he felt an invisible figure rub against his ankles before moving away. Blackie. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

"Hello there," Osho said before making a finger gun and firing several wind bullets at the frog.

The frog dodged immediately as it bounced between the trees to avoid the projectiles. As it did so, Osho could feel the Mana, specifically the Mana in its feet, start to build as it accumulated with each bounce.

He quickly realized what it was about to do and swapped to his daggers just as the frog got too close.

He dived out of the way at the last second as the frog exploded with speed and smashed into the ground where he had been a moment ago.

The force washed over him and Osho was thrown away, but not before attaching a string to the hilt of his dagger and swinging it at the frog, landing a hit on its body which was nowhere near as durable as its tongue.

He regained his footing and watched the frog leap at him once again, the kinetic energy starting to build once more with each movement.

Osho fired several wind bullets at it when it moved in a straight line and dived away when it got too close, and just as the frog turned to jump at him again, it staggered once more as another gash landed in the same spot before. Osho didn’t hesitate as he shot forward.

He got close and jabbed his dagger down towards the head of the frog, but the thing managed to move its head out of the way, making him hit its other shoulder instead.

He was about to follow-up but got blown away by a blast of Kinetic energy. The force rattled his bones but was otherwise harmless.

That’s when he had a bad feeling and ducked.

Something whipped over his head as several trees behind him got snapped in half.

’Tch.’ He clicked his tongue as he rolled away just in time to avoid the tongue smashing down on him.

Once he got to his feet, he was immediately sent scrambling as several quick whipping attacks tried to flail him in quick succession.

Getting closer to the frog had its downsides as if it managed to heal its tongue, it could use it in close range with far more maneuverability, practically being able to whip it around its body like a shield.

The bright side is that it accumulated kinetic energy slower, causing its hits to do a lot less damage in a short time. Something that came in handy as Osho found himself needing to deflect several attacks. But even when enhancing his body with Mana, his arms still ached from the impacts.

’I need to find a way to reduce the force of its strikes.’ He mused.

A few exchanges later, he got his answer.

When the next hit came, he countered with a gust of wind. But not to deflect it or stop the attack. Instead, he made the wind act like cotton, absorbing a good deal of the kinetic energy before the tongue hit him.

It nearly didn’t do jack and he almost had his daggers fly out of his hands from the impact, but he very quickly ironed out the issues.

Instead of creating a gust to counter the attack, he created a ’soft’ wind barrier and made it considerably thick before placing it quite close to his body.

The second time he had to block, the result was much better as he managed to deflect the attack with only moderate difficulty.

Osho pushed it even further, his brain working overtime as it continued to iron out the flaws of this method he was using.

Gale wouldn’t always be available for him to take advantage of the local sky domain, as such, he needed his own defensive skill when a situation like that arose. And that’s what was happening right now.

Suddenly, the Frog’s tongue wasn’t hitting as hard as before, and the kinetic energy was building a lot slower as a lot of it got dispersed whenever it hit this barrier.

This, understandably, began to frustrate the creature, causing it to pay less and less attention to its surroundings and focus almost solely on Osho who had essentially become a tank as he dodged and deflected every attack with uncanny precision, his eyes wide and focused as he didn’t let a single movement escape his attention.

Just as it seemed like things had entered a stalemate, something flew in from the side and embedded itself deep into the side of the frog and threw it into a tree with enough force to break it.

Before it could recover, several more of these projectiles arrived. It dodged some, but a large number of them still struck the creature.

Osho watched the crystal spikes assault the frog and wasted no time as he dashed forward, vaguely sensing Blackie in his Mana sense.

The two of them closed in on the frog and it tried to blast them away with its kinetic energy, but they both just shrugged it off as they started to mercilessly rip into the creature.

Osho stabbed and stabbed while Blackie slashed and bit, blood and pieces of flesh flying everywhere as the two of them wasted no time in making sure that the frog’s subscription to life was terminated early.

They only stopped when Osho received a notice from his bracelet, signaling he’d gotten the points from the kill.

He exhaled and finally relaxed a little bit. His entire body ached, and his Mana had reduced quite a bit now.

However, he didn’t stop moving. Instead, he went over to the pretty shredded corpse of the frog and opened its mouth.

He saw its tongue hanging loosely from inside. Without hesitation, he reached in with his dagger and started to remove it from its base.

"Gimme your tongue." He mumbled as he cut it free.
