Bear School Astartes-Chapter 872 - 855: Goddess
’An obscure Goddess’?
Archbishop Klimte’s words intrigued Lann.
For the two words in this phrase are almost antonyms. How can one be a ’Goddess’ yet remain ’obscure’?
Lann stood silently behind Fodolink, adhering to the cautious principle of ’outsiders should meddle less’, maintaining his silence.
And at this moment, he slightly raised his head to look at the enormous carriage driving past behind Archbishop Klimte.
Two black horses, breathing heavily through moist nostrils, pulled the carriage, following the procession.
It seemed that in this world, even animals like horses were very silent, without a single neigh or snort, just silently pulling the carriage.
Moreover, the carriage did not host a cabin, but a large European-style bed. The luxurious bed had a frame on all sides, and light as mist, black gauze hung down from the frame, billowing in the faint breeze, making the scene inside indistinct.
It was a tall feminine figure.
Even if she was sitting with her knees bent, her height exceeded that of a normal person standing.
She wore a black robe, which lacked the solemnity and dignity of divine beings, instead appearing as a loose, everyday style.
It was clear she hadn’t meticulously prepared to travel in the guise of a ’Goddess’.
This matched up with the ’unexpected incident’ Archbishop Klimte mentioned.
Although her physique was large, her body proportions were similar to Lann’s and did not become distorted or awkward due to the magnified size.
Yet one could still discern the luscious and shapely figure.
A long black veil draped over her head, obscuring the upper half of her face. Despite only revealing the lower half, her features were exquisite enough for the title ’Goddess’.
However, the overall black attire rendered her somber and gloomy.
Her expression further accentuated this fact.
It was a type of sorrow so profound it bordered on bewilderment.
The Goddess now resembled a noblewoman in mourning attire, vacantly staring at a coffin.
Sitting alone on the luxurious, intricate carriage, she was led by the procession.
...Is this what divine beings of this world look like?
On matters concerning ’divine beings’, Lann didn’t want to make presumptuous guesses.
Yet, apart from the inexplicable sadness, the Goddess on the carriage didn’t seem wholly absorbed in her own world.
As she noticed Lann’s gaze while passing, she nodded slightly toward him.
Her gesture matched her dignified yet graceful demeanor, displaying proper etiquette.
Lann initially hesitated, then slightly bowed in response.
After that, the Goddess’s carriage passed by the group involved in conversation, the sound of wheels echoing as it moved away.
This made Archbishop Klimte glance at the young man behind the old Knight, though he said nothing more.
"I sincerely hope the flame will protect you, Fodolink. But I must remind you... if you feel you can’t hold on any longer, if there’s no hope left, then leave on your own accord. At least don’t harm anyone else, do you agree?"
The old Knight nodded heavily.
He knew this was the gentlest thing the Archbishop could say.
Since ancient times, the White Sect has had a tradition of hunting and exterminating the Undead.
White Sect Knights have specially developed various techniques to enable them to battle undead, insane enemies.
Although developments led to the longest-standing White Sect and the relatively mild Green Sect practically merging.
Yet facing an Undead wandering around human settlements without immediately killing, bleeding, and deeply burying them was undoubtedly special treatment.
Fodolink realized this was due to his status before becoming Undead.
Holy Knight... it’s thanks to this previous status that as an Undead, he can still approach the White Sect’s caravan and engage in conversation with the Archbishop.
"Of course, of course, I will do that."
The old Knight spoke with difficulty, for admitting death was near is hard for anyone.
"But I, I still want to find a way. Even if I can’t break the curse, at least I can extend my time and hope to see the flame flourish once more."
"Suit yourself." Archbishop Klimte seemed unsurprised by this stubborn expression, his grizzled beard didn’t twitch a bit.
"As long as you remember your promise, then suit yourself."
"The Undead Settlement was originally a place for those seeking relief from the Undead curse, and these days, there’s a growing number of Undead and those seeking relief increasingly gather there."
"If you feel you can’t manage, at least go far away. You are a renowned, powerful Knight, no one at the Undead Settlement can stop you. If chaos breaks out there, then..."
The Archbishop didn’t finish his sentence, just slowly shook his head adorned with a high hat and patted Fodolink’s shoulder.
The old Knight’s shoulder plates clattered at this.
Lann looked at his back, feeling that the old Knight’s body seemed much frailer under those gentle pats.
Becoming a wandering soul... must be a terrifying experience, right?
Then, Demon Hunter noticed Fodolink seemed to spot someone in the caravan.
His body quivered, then his speech became hurried as if desperate to escape quickly.
"I understand, Archbishop. I will remember my promise."
Fodolink spoke while gesturing towards Lann behind him.
"This is a lost young man, I intended to take him to the Undead Settlement. But since I encountered your caravan, would you escort him to the Profound Church under your protection?"
"Certainly, no problem." Archbishop Klimte readily agreed, "Even under the curse of the Undead, you remain a radiant, noble Holy Knight, which reassures me greatly."
Though he spoke reassuring words, his habitually somber expression lent an incongruous air.
Lann hadn’t expected to be ’entrusted’ so suddenly. Experiencing being cared for, something he often did for others, was novel.
After agreeing to Fodolink’s request, the Archbishop along with two towering Church Knights behind him turned to walk up to the head of the procession.
This caravan primarily traveled on foot, so Lann only needed to walk alongside.
"Follow along, young man."
Fodolink waved at Lann, then turned intending to leave alone.
"Now you know, I’m an Undead. No telling when I’ll go mad, dying will make me insane, mental collapse will make me mad too, like a trap that explodes with one step."
"Avoid if you can, stay away."
