Basketball Legend: When Pride Still Matters-Chapter 445 - 299: Inviting the Gods
Chapter 445: Chapter 299: Inviting the Gods
The first day of the All-Star Weekend, and Yu Fei’s agent, Arne Trem, was an extremely busy man. MM Not only was Yu Fei a client, but he also represented another client who was an All-Star this season (McGrady). However, he was forced to devote all his energy to being at Yu Fei’s side.
The incident at the carnival didn’t bring any bad reviews for Yu Fei. Instead, many sponsors who were already fond of Yu Fei saw his influence and quickly reached tentative agreements for collaboration.
In less than a day, Yu Fei had gained five more endorsements.
What made Trem uncomfortable was that, although his presence was needed for signing these endorsements, the negotiations were handled by people from Quentin DiMio’s company.
DiMio’s B-B-F had already become an important part of the Chosen Empire. As for him, the agent, apart from negotiations and communications with the teams, most of the time his role was only symbolic.
“Frye, I don’t know what my purpose is being here,” Trem said, discouraged.
“Maybe there isn’t one,” replied Yu Fei, like a philosopher, “but if everything in this world had to have a purpose, life would be too tiring.”
Today saw the first activities of the All-Star Weekend.
Not only was there the Rookie Challenge, but also the Celebrity Game.
Initially, Houston wanted to invite both Parker’s girlfriend Eva and Yu Fei’s girlfriend Christina to serve as head coaches for the two celebrity teams.
But Christina declined the invitation because she was currently giving Big Fei the cold shoulder.
The reason was simple: after dating for a number of years and understanding each other deeply, 30-year-old Christina wanted to take the next step, but Yu Fei had no plans to settle down just yet.
Hearing that Christina had declined, LeBron James was eager to help and couldn’t stand seeing the hosts in “difficulty,” so he took the initiative and suggested a good substitute.
Thus, Beyonce became the head coach of another celebrity team.
Yu Fei was completely indifferent to this celebrity match as his most memorable moment from a previous life was some Canadian Electric Eel who often attended the event as a guest but performed embarrassingly. Luckily, Mr. Eel had already taken his talent to the prison system. Now, all Yu Fei could wish for was that Mr. Eel would give standout performances at the sewing machine celebrity contests.
Later at the Rookie Challenge, Yu Fei personally attended the event to support Danny Granger.
Unfortunately, there was a significant experience gap between the first and second-year players, with many rookies still getting used to the NBA’s pace, while second-year players had begun to become major rotations on their teams.
Unless there was a vast disparity in talent, sophomores were unlikely to lose to freshmen.
Granger came off the bench to play 24 minutes and scored 13 points, but the sophomores won a sweeping victory, with Iguodala selected as MVP.
Yu Fei was generally satisfied with Granger’s performance. For a shooter like him to score in double digits by his own efforts amongst a heap of “blind monks” without teammates feeding him was fairly good.
The second day of All-Star Weekend would host various classic individual competitions.
On the Bucks’ end, Kevin Martin was set to participate in the three-point contest, and Louis Williams in the skills challenge.
Yu Fei wasn’t competing in any matches; his sole participation was in Reebok’s commercial activities.
That evening, Yu Fei likewise went to the venue to support his teammates.
Unfortunately, Martin didn’t bring home the three-point contest championship, and Lou Williams was even eliminated in the preliminary round of the skills challenge.
Dirk Nowitzki won the three-point contest, but his final score was only 18 points, indicating that the shooters didn’t perform at their best. The skills challenge was interesting, even though Lou Williams didn’t make it to the final, Yu Fei still thoroughly enjoyed it, as LeBron James made it to the finals, and his opponent was Dwyane Wade.
James had several errors in the passing event, leading him to take 40 seconds to complete all tasks—basically handing the championship to Wade. Wade lived up to expectations, passing each event at first try and winning the skills challenge championship in 26 seconds.
“I want to win all the championships this season,” Wade said with underlying meaning, holding the skills challenge championship trophy, “This is just the smallest one.”
Although James missed out on the skills challenge championship, he had already set his sights on tomorrow’s All-Star main event.
“You know, I will strive to win no matter the competition,” said James, “I want to be the best player.”
What Yu Fei didn’t expect was that LeBron James’s simple statement could trigger a promotion involving Jordan, who was energetically marketing AJ21.
“If LeBron wants to be the best player, his first goal should be to win an MVP,” said Jordan with his signature faint smile, “There might be some distance between MVP and FMVP, but he could try for the AMVP.”
The following evening, the Toyota Center held a grand pre-All-Star game event.
The reporters conveyed Jordan’s comments to James.
His face lit up with surprise, “I didn’t expect MJ to say that, I’m really grateful. AMVP? Of course, I want to be the best player, and I’ll definitely go for it.”
To keep his focus, Yu Fei generally didn’t pay attention to the off-court gossip.
But someone always relayed the interaction between Jordan and James to him.
Lawson was quite proactive in playing the role of the messenger eunuch. “Big Fei, the God said LeBron should aim for the AMVP, so LeBron has decided to vie for tonight’s MVP. Tsk tsk, look at how close they are.”
“Shut up, Tony,” Yu Fei said. “You should focus your energy elsewhere.”
In the locker room of the Eastern All-Star Team, Yu Fei sat quietly.
Coach George Karl beamed as he said, “I know everyone’s here to have fun, but since we’re here to have fun, we should make it enjoyable. If we can win this game, I think everyone will be happy.”
Yu Fei tried asking, “Will the Houston folks be happy too?”
“Sacrificing the good mood of people in Houston for the good mood of the entire East Coast might just be the most worthwhile deal I’ve made.”
As an experienced coach, Karl managed to stir up the team’s enthusiasm with just a few words.
Before the game started, James specially sought out Yu Fei for a chat, “Frye, let’s win this game!”
“You know, LeBron, I don’t care about this game,” Yu Fei said. “If I get too involved, I might win the AMVP, and then you’ll have trouble explaining yourself to number 23.”
James was taken aback and directly said, “I’ve never talked about this with Michael, it’s all media hype.”
“So you’re saying, if I win the AMVP tonight, no one will be disappointed?” Yu Fei asked.
James didn’t know why Yu Fei was so confident, just as he didn’t know why he felt led by the nose, “Frye, no one cares about that MVP.”
“Since you say so,” Yu Fei chuckled, “then I’ll gladly accept it.”
Shaquille O’Neal looked at Yu Fei with disdain, “Hey, the game hasn’t even started and you’re already talking about AMVP. Don’t you think that’s a bit selfish?”
“Is there a possibility that this is my commitment as the best player in the Eastern Conference to lead you all to an insignificant victory?” Yu Fei taunted. “Of course, a big fatso like you who gains three circles of fat as soon as the offseason starts would never understand.”
Seeing O’Neal about to erupt, Wade quickly stepped forward to calm the situation, “Frye, I want to be the AMVP tonight too.”
This time, it was James who was surprised.
He said he didn’t care about the AMVP as a way to appear modest, but would still play his usual game; Yu Fei openly declared he was going for the AMVP due to his character, but why was Wade acting like this now? Could the Frye virus be contagious?
“Since you all want it so much, then I might as well join the fight,” Iverson said excitedly. “Let’s see who takes it!”
Infuriated, O’Neal accused Yu Fei, “Because of you, asshole, everyone’s become selfish. You’re the root of all evil!”
“What’s wrong with being a little selfish? Are you trying to say you’re selfless?” Yu Fei said with a sneer. “If you had been a little selfless in Los Angeles, obediently played Kobe’s sidekick, you wouldn’t have been traded off like junk. Now that you’re in Miami, you feel selfless again, willing to play sidekick to a youngster like Dwyane. But that’s just you facing reality, it’s not the era where you could win a championship while carrying extra weight and holding on to Kobe’s coattails anymore.”
Wade countered, “Frye, Shaq isn’t a dog, he’s my big brother.”
Yu Fei nodded, “You’re so nice to your dog. Does it bark well too?”
“!@#$!$”
George Karl had a nightmare team in mind, made up of Yu Fei, Jordan, Hamilton, Kenyon Martin, and O’Neal—briefly called Yu Fei and his enemies.
If one O’Neal could disastrously divide the Eastern All-Star Team alongside Yu Fei, it was hard to imagine what would happen if these five were on the same team.
That night, as the Eastern and Western All-Stars took the stage, the Toyota Center introduced the evening’s biggest celebrity guest—Carrie Underwood, the 2004 American Idol winner. She performed her new album’s title track “Some Hearts.”
It was an upbeat country song, and Yu Fei liked the lyrics, but while the Western stars seemed to enjoy it with blissful expressions, the Eastern stars looked serious and occasionally glared at one another.
Yu Fei gently nodded to the rhythm of Carrie’s song, and he had to admit, it was a great piece of country music.
Good song, good song, a bunch of people all vying for AMVP?
Alright then, let’s see who is the bigger cancer.
When it came to being a cancer, who could scare the Kobe fans?
Before the game, Yu Fei walked over to the Western All-Stars and said to Kobe, “Kobe, lend me your power.”
“What do you mean?”

“Come on, give me a high five.”
“I don’t high five opponents.”
“It’s just the All-Star Game. Why so serious?”
Kobe eyed Yu Fei suspiciously but eventually relented.
“Slap!”
It was like a ritual to an evil deity, giving Yu Fei the ultimate psychological boost.
Hey, I’ve summoned the Kobe of the 2002-03 season in this invocation ritual—try that if you can.
But guess what, tonight will I be the biggest cancer in All-Star history going 17 for 47 or the most valuable cancer going 19 for 38?
It’s a mystery, but soon you’ll have your answer.
