Back To The 80s-Chapter 416 - 426: Pregnant_1
As soon as Ji Xiangdong and Bai Xiaolan entered the house, Wen Xiuqing rushed over to greet them, broom in hand. She diligently dusted the snowflakes off Ji Xiangdong and asked, "The snow just started falling out of nowhere. How did you manage to stay out for so long? Have you eaten yet?"
Taking the broom from Xiuqing, Xiangdong brushed the snow off Xiaolan and said, "We haven’t had dinner yet. I’ll prepare it. You go and watch TV."
Xiaolan laughed and said, "You two go inside. I’ll heat up the food. I made a noodle dish today and everyone said it was delicious. I saved a serving for you. No garlic added, otherwise it would be overpowered by the garlic taste." Then she rushed off to the kitchen.
Walking to the other room with Xiuqing, Xiangdong noticed that only Lu Songyuan and the two children were around. He asked, "Have Zhanguo and Aiguo left?"
Wen Xiuqing answered, "Yes, the snow started coming down heavily all of a sudden, so we let them leave after dinner. They took Yueyue with them as well. We were afraid the kids would get cold if they left too late."
The two children were active on the heated brick bed. Seeing their uncle return, Xiaopang, unafraid of strangers, ran over to be picked up.
Ji Xiangdong, chuckling, picked up Xiaopang and watched "Four Generations Under One Roof" on the TV.
Lu Songyuan was engrossed in the TV show. "Look at how good the acting is! Didn’t it feel exactly like that back in the day?" he mused.
Xiangdong watched Qian Zhongshi driving a car full of Japanese soldiers off a cliff on the TV. The ensuing fire lit up half the sky, followed by a close-up of the round moon. Despite his focus on the TV, his mind was busy planning his next move. He had never been one to adopt a strategy that would hurt him as much as his enemy.
Bai Xiaolan brought over hot steamed buns and the vinegar-chili stir-fried meat from the evening. Then she fetched the mixed noodle dish and porridge.
Setting them down on the bed-table, she laughed, "You should eat now! Xiaobei made this vinegar-chili stir-fried meat. I had a whole plate of it myself. Seriously, just talking about it makes my mouth water." Xiaolan felt a wave of saliva rush into her mouth, making her crave the dish even more.
Ji Xiangdong, still holding Xiaopang, offered his chopsticks to her. "If you want more, you can finish these too."
Xiaolan waved him off, saying, "No more for me, I had plenty at night. Let me hold Xiaopang now, you eat." But when she reached out to pick up Xiaopang, he twisted around in Xiangdong’s arms, holding onto his clothes tightly, refusing to let go.
Xiuqing, noticing Xiaolan’s habit of continuously eating spicy food at dinner, asked, "Xiaolan, is there something wrong with your body?"
Xiaolan shook her head and replied, "No, I’m fine." Xiuqing let the matter drop, given Lu Songyuan was present.
Ji Xiangdong came back to his senses, laughed, lowered his head and began eating while holding Xiaopang.
While lying in bed that night, Bai Xiaolan mused, "Tomorrow we should have Xiaobei cook that vinegar-chili stir-fry again. Also, we still have some pickled beans left, so we can cook a pickled-bean stir-fried meat dish." As she went over her thoughts, she realized her mouth was watering.
Ji Xiangdong, with a small chuckle, pulled Bai Xiaolan into his blanket, brushed her hair away from her face and said, "Silly girl, are you going to be a mother?"
Bai Xiaolan blinked. After a pause, she said, "Well, I haven’t had my period this month. However, last month it was also delayed for half a month."
Xiangdong gently kissed a corner of Xiaolan’s lips and asked, "Don’t you usually not enjoy dipping dumplings in vinegar? When did you start liking sour foods so much?"
In the dark, Bai Xiaolan blinked hard. She snapped out of her daze and asked excitedly, "Are you saying I might really be pregnant?" After asking, she tightly hugged Ji Xiangdong’s neck, trying hard not to break into laughter.
With one arm around Bai Xiaolan, Ji Xiangdong’s other hand softly slid inside her pants, his palm resting against her lower abdomen. The thought that their child might be growing inside her filled him with excitement.
When Xiaolan had calmed down, she raised her head and said, "We shouldn’t tell anyone yet. Let’s wait and see if it’s true first. What if it’s a false alarm? We don’t want to get their hopes up."
Unable to help himself, Xiangdong pooled down and kissed her repeatedly as he said, "You silly girl, you’ve really grown up. You’ve started thinking about everything."
Bai Xiaolan chuckled, "Is that supposed to be a compliment?"
In response, Xiangdong gave her a long, possessive kiss.
Once the kiss ended, Bai Xiaolan caught her breath and asked, "If we really do have a child, would you prefer a boy or a girl?"
"Either is fine. Just look at Yueyue, Xiaopang, and Mo Wang – all adorable," replied Ji Xiangdong, excitement swelling in his heart. Having a child would make their family even more complete.
Bai Xiaolan grinned, eyes squinting, thinking about how she would soon be a mother!
The next day, when Gu Xiaobei and Fang Jing arrived, Xiaobei couldn’t help but feel something was off. She knew Ji Xiangdong and Bai Xiaolan were close, but today it was almost over the top. Xiangdong was eagerly helping Xiaolan with everything, and his adoring gaze never left her.
Xiaolan, as if transformed overnight, was radiating a maternal glow.
Before lunch, Bai Xiaolan hopped over to Xiaobei, who was peeling potatoes, and excitedly suggested, "Let’s have sour bean noodles for lunch. We can add some vinegar-chili as well." As she spoke, her mouth started watering – it was downright embarrassing.
Xiaobei scrutinized Xiaolan and said with a knowing look, "Alright, but why do you want to eat this dish?"
Bai Xiaolan scratched her head, unsure of what to say as Xiaobei was always perceptive. Falteringly, she said, "You know all about it, why do you even ask?"
Xiaobei chuckled and responded, "I don’t know! How would I, unless I was a worm in your stomach?"
Bai Xiaolan gave Xiaobei a light shove and burst out, "Are we not friends? Be fair!"
Taking pity on her, Xiaobei stopped teasing and asked, "How long has it been?"
Speaking softly, Xiaolan said, "The last time we had it was on the train back... so roughly around 40 days now? But we still can’t be sure."
Xiaobei replied in a light-hearted manner, "Well, you’re probably right. You should go to the hospital for a check-up tomorrow. Having an early confirmation would give you peace of mind, don’t you think? And if it’s true, well, our new year celebrations would be even more joyous with another addition to the family on the way!"
With anticipation on her face, Xiaolan replied, "I hope it’s true. Then our family would be having a little tiger. How awe-inspiring that would be!"
Xiaobei fulfilled Xiaolan’s cravings at lunch by dicing pickled beans and vinegar-chili and frying them with some minced meat. Xiaolan used this dish to eat with her noodles. To keep the sour taste prominent, Xiaobei only rinsed the pickled beans and vinegar-chili once, instead of her usual multiple rinses.
Bai Xiaolan finished all of the pickled beans Xiaobei cooked. Xiaobei watched this spectacle, her mouth wide open in shock.
Seeing Xiaolan eating pickled food like that, Xiuqing couldn’t help but warn, "You can’t eat pickled food like this. A little bit is enough each time. Eating like this isn’t good for your health."
