Back To The 80s-Chapter 306 - 316: Plan_1
Bai Xiaolan glanced at Lu Zhanguo again, then whispered mysteriously into Gu Xiaobei’s ear: "I’m off to find treasure." Her little face was full of excitement as she spoke.
Gu Xiaobei found Bai Xiaolan’s train of thought to be even more unpredictable than her own, and her personality seemed strikingly boyish.
"Treasure hunting? What kind of treasure?" Gu Xiaobei asked curiously.
Bai Xiaolan shook her head: "I can’t tell you, otherwise it won’t work out."
Gu Xiaobei chuckled: "You’re making it sound so mysterious."
Bai Xiaolan shrugged it off: "It’s not that I don’t want to tell you, it’s just if I spill the beans, I might feel embarrassed." Then she looked at Lu Zhanguo again and couldn’t help saying: "Sis-in-law, let’s go upstairs. I have something to tell you."
Looking perplexed, Gu Xiaobei noticed that Bai Xiaolan had glanced at Lu Zhanguo multiple times and seemed hesitant to speak. She nodded in agreement and carried Mo Wang upstairs.
Upon entering the room, Bai Xiaolan sighed in relief, pulled up a chair backward, leaned against the chair back, and said: "Sis-in-law, have you heard about something?"
While holding her baby on the bed, Gu Xiaobei was taken aback by this sudden question from Bai Xiaolan.
Bai Xiaolan scratched her head, feeling awkward, and said: "It was about my plan to marry Brother Zhanguo."
Gu Xiaobei nodded: "I’ve heard a little about it."
"After turning twenty, my mother started pressuring me to get married. I went through all the men in the compound and deceitfully told my mom I was dating Brother Zhanguo since he rarely comes home. She didn’t believe me, so I asked a friend to write me several letters, signing them with Zhanguo’s name," Bai Xiaolan confessed shyly.
Gu Xiaobei was taken aback by this girl’s audacious ploy. She laughed and asked: "How did they find out then?"
Bai Xiaolan sighed: "When my mother found out, she came to discuss with Auntie about my marriage to Zhanguo. I thought that since we’re the bride’s family, even if my mother knew the truth, she would imbibe dignity, awaiting the groom’s family’s proposal. But to my dismay, my mother, fearing I won’t get married, took the initiative in speaking out. Realizing the trouble, I confessed the truth right away," Bai Xiaolan said while scratching her head in vexation.
A little dumbstruck, Gu Xiaobei found the excuse quite amusing, likely to be caught out at any moment. She chuckled and asked: "So why don’t you want to get married yet?"
Bai Xiaolan blushed, stuttered and finally said: "There’s someone I like."
"Who?" Gu Xiaobei asked eagerly.
Bai Xiaolan scratched her head: "Someone I met a few years ago. I mistook him for a thief, but he managed to elude me, and I haven’t seen him since."
Gu Xiaobei was speechless. How could she locate someone she had seen once a few years back, of whom she didn’t even know the full name? "You want to find him?"
Bai Xiaolan blushed again and shyly nodded: "I heard from one of his companions that they were heading to G Province, and that his name is Jin Ge."
Gu Xiaobei was taken aback when she suddenly thought of Jin Cheng. She hurriedly asked: "What does he look like?"
Bai Xiaolan gave a rather frustrating reply: "I couldn’t make it out well in the darkness."
Gu Xiaobei was flabbergasted. This was some kind of divine unrequited love; holding onto vague memories of a man she knew little about, yet her affection lasted for so many years.
"If you don’t run into him by any chance in the provincial capital, you can’t keep lingering in this state," Gu Xiaobei tried to give Bai Xiaolan a gentle reality check.
Bai Xiaolan laughed: "It’s fine. If I can’t find him, I’ll just get married to someone else when I reach thirty."
Gu Xiaobei couldn’t help but note: "By the time you’re thirty, all the good men will be taken. Settling for just anyone would be a disservice to yourself."
Bai Xiaolan laughed it off: "I haven’t thought so far ahead, plus with my notorious reputation, no one within my mother’s social circle would dare to marry me."
Gu Xiaobei sighed. This hot-tempered girl seemed to spend all her time thinking about being a vigilante.
After talking for a while longer, Bai Xiaolan lingered at the Lu’s long enough for lunch before reluctantly heading home.
As Bai Xiaolan left, she repeatedly urged Gu Xiaobei to assure her mother she had been at the Lu’s since early morning if she asked.
Once assured by Gu Xiaobei, Bai Xiaolan finally left with ease.
When Fang Jing returned from work that evening, she looked distressed. As she walked in the door with Yueyue, she barked at Lu Aiguo: "You need to sort out this matter about Ruixue’s disheveled house."
Lu Aiguo, holding Mo Wang and playing, asked strangely upon hearing this: "What happened? You seem quite upset."
Fang Jing angrily replied: "What happened? Ruixue caused quite a scene at my workplace today. It was horribly embarrassing."
Lu Aiguo’s face darkened. He held a grudge against Lu Ruixue for the trouble and asked Fang Jing: "What exactly did she say?"
As Fang Jing was taking off her padded jacket, she said, "She demanded that we give her house back and accused us of exploiting her. Lu Aiguo, let me tell you this, if she continues to create a commotion like this, we’re done. How old is she to still be requiring your care? You’re wasting your time. Instead, you should be contemplating whether our daughter should take up painting or piano."
Lu Aiguo handed Mo Wang to Gu Xiaobei and spoke discontentedly: "Stick to the topic, don’t just threaten to leave every time something happens. Who you’re trying to scare?"
Upon hearing this, Fang Jing didn’t care that Wen Xiuqing, Lu Zhanguo, and Gu Xiaobei were all sitting in the living room. She raised her voice: "Am I threatening you? Let’s see if it’s just a threat this time. You better handle this matter promptly. I’ve been holding back my opinions for quite some time now. Why on earth does Lu Ruixue deserve your attention? Even our parents are still around, who do you think you are?"
Feeling humiliated, Lu Aiguo glared at Fang Jing and said: "Fine, fine. You’ve been fussing over this issue endlessly. I’m going to resolve it now." With that, he put on his coat and stormed out.
Seeing this, Yueyue sobbed: "Daddy, where are you going? Please don’t fight."
Fang Jing was also upset. Seeing Lu Aiguo behaving like that, she said angrily: "Forget about him, let’s go upstairs." After saying that, she took Yueyue and went upstairs.
Wen Xiuqing had been silent throughout the commotion. After Fang Jing had taken Yueyue and gone upstairs, she finally spoke to Lu Zhanguo: "In the future, you should refrain from involving yourselves too much in Ruixue’s affairs. If someone is useless, no amount of help could aid them. Unless Ruixue and Chen Dajun split, only then would she realize."
Lu Zhanguo, who was holding Xiaopang, didn’t say anything. On the other hand, Xiaopang, like a little chatterbox, was cooing in agreement with Wen Xiuqing’s words.
Lu Aiguo, after leaving the house and stewing over it, made his way to Lu Ruixue’s house.
Lu Ruixue and Chen Dajun were dining on hot pot around the heater. On seeing Lu Aiguo, looking murderous, they reacted unhappily: "My third sister-in-law reported me, didn’t she? What did I even say to warrant this?"
Lu Aiguo, pointing at Lu Ruixue’s nose, scolded: "I initially thought you were just spoiled, but now it appears you don’t even know how to be a decent human. Has a dog eaten your mind that you do nothing worthwhile every day?"
This made Lu Ruixue to snap: "Lu Aiguo, quit preaching to me. Despite pretending to be kind to me, you slyly plotted to get our house. You’re such a decent human indeed."
