Chapter 223: Chapter 233: Take Action_1

This was the first time Gu Xiaobei had heard Lu Zhanguo speak at such length. Upon reflection, he made sense - Chen Dajun indeed had mishandled the relationship between his mother and his wife.

Lu Ruixue remained silent, nervously wringing her fingers. She and Chen Dajun had been childhood friends and still had feelings for each other. However, Chen Dajun had blamed her based on his mother’s word this time, which deeply upset her.

After sitting for a while, a sweaty Chen Dajun rushed in, urgently blurting out, "Ruixue, look, I’ve brought you roast duck. I ran all the way back, and the duck is still hot..."

Before he finished his sentence, he noticed the people sitting in the room, especially Lu Zhanguo by the window. He immediately became nervous, clearly intimidated.

"Brother Zhanguo, Sister-in-law, when did you return?" Chen Dajun hastily greeted.

"Just arrived yesterday." Lu Zhanguo replied indifferently, and Gu Xiaobei also just politely nodded.

Chen Dajun touched his nose, unsure what to say, looking somewhat helpless.

Lu Aiguo was about to chitchat with Chen Dajun, but Fang Jing firmly gripped his clothes and scolded: "Just sit down and behave."

"Oh come on, I don’t believe this, Chen Dajun, what are you up to?" This was Lu Aiguo’s first encounter with Chen Dajun since their fight, and his pent-up anger flared again.

"Brother Lu, didn’t I already apologize to you? I had a bit too much to drink that day and acted foolishly," Chen Dajun replied with a sheepish smile.

Lu Aiguo did not fall for it. If it weren’t for Fang Jing holding him back, he would have sought revenge. "Don’t play innocent now! That day, you and your cousin were quite arrogant. "

Lu Zhanguo frowned, realising that his brother wasn’t the problem-solving type, but rather a pot-stirrer. He coldly interrupted, "Aiguo, keep your comments to yourself. Dajun, you and Ruixue should talk things out. We’ll leave now."

As Lu Zhanguo was preparing to leave, he glanced at Lu Ruixue and asked nonchalantly, "You’ve been in the hospital for almost a week, aren’t you sick of it?"

After calling for Gu Xiaobei and leaving without looking back, an angry Lu Ruixue was left wondering, could anyone really undermine her the way her own brother just did?

With a stern glare at Chen Dajun, Lu Aiguo was dragged out by Fang Jing.

"Brother, why didn’t you let me teach that guy a lesson?" Outside the ward, Lu Aiguo complained begrudgingly to Lu Zhanguo.

Lu Zhanguo shot him a cold glance. "You want Ruixue to hold a grudge against you, don’t you?" Saying that, he headed off to get his bicycle.

"What do you mean?’" Lu Aiguo was confused.

Gu Xiaobei explained, "What your brother means is that when a couple fights, the peacemaker becomes an easy target. If they reconcile, whether your efforts were appreciated is uncertain, but if they don’t, then all the blame will fall on you."

Lu Aiguo thought for a moment and agreed. If he actually punched Chen Dajun and the couple reconciled later, Ruixue would certainly blame him for hitting too hard. Being a good guy is difficult.

On their way back, Fang Jing asked Lu Aiguo if they should pick up Yueyue for dinner. Lu Aiguo figured he should let his child have the chance to meet his returned uncle and aunt.

"Brother, you and my sister-in-law go ahead, we’ll go to my father-in-law’s to pick up Yueyue." Lu Aiguo stopped his bike, called out to Lu Zhanguo, and headed off onto a side road.

As soon as Lu Zhanguo walked in the front door with Gu Xiaobei, they heard boisterous laughter and women’s voices coming from the living room.

Gu Xiaobei recognized the voice instantly. Wasn’t it her mother-in-law’s best friend, Qin Ximei?

Lu Zhanguo also frowned, parked his bicycle, and led Gu Xiaobei inside.

The three people in the room, who were in deep conversation, turned their heads at the sound of the door opening. Sitting beside Qin Ximei was a young woman wearing a red sweater, similar in age to Gu Xiaobei. She bore a strong resemblance to Yuan Ye, and she must be the third daughter of the Yuan Family, Yuan Qing.

Qin Ximei, with exaggerated emotion, stood up: "Zhanguo is back? When did he arrive?"

"We arrived last night," Lu Zhanguo responded flatly.

Excited, Yuan Qing jumped over and stopped about ten centimeters from Lu Zhanguo. With a big smile, she said, "Brother Zhanguo, do you remember me?"

Gu Xiaobei felt invisible on the side, as if both mother and daughter didn’t notice her at all.

Lu Zhanguo was uncomfortable with Yuan Qing’s proximity and subtly stepped back. He spoke the truth: "I don’t remember."

Yuan Qing’s face froze for a moment, while Qin Ximei rushed in to smooth things over, saying, "You were still a little kid when your Brother Zhanguo left for the army. After so many years, of course he wouldn’t remember."

Gu Xiaobei silently praised Lu Zhanguo in her heart; one part she appreciated about him was his honesty.

Lu Zhanguo glanced at the others. "Aunt Yuan, you continue your chat, I’ll bring Xiaobei upstairs to change."

"Well go on. Hurry up. It’s too hot in here with so many clothes on," said Qin Ximei, dismissing them with a wave of her hand, while her scornful eyes slid over Gu Xiaobei.

Gu Xiaobei wasn’t the type to let things slide. When no one was looking, she rolled her eyes at Qin Ximei, then bid farewell to Wen Xiuqing with a smile, before following Lu Zhanguo upstairs.

Approaching their bed, Gu Xiaobei noticed their bag returned in a disarray - she clearly remembered taking out clean clothes and neatly zipping the bag, placing it on the chair by the bed. But now, the bag was half unzipped, and the clothes inside were disheveled.

Gu Xiaobei stood frozen, fixing the opening of the bag. It was hard for her to believe that someone as aloof as Wen Xiuqing could do something like this.

After removing his coat and jacket, Lu Zhanguo noticed Gu Xiaobei’s confusion, and asked, "What’s wrong?"

"Nothing." Gu Xiaobei said with a smile. She decided to handle this matter on her own.

"You should take off your coat and rest for a while. After Aiguo and Yueyue arrive, we can go down." Lu Zhanguo was aware of the tension between Gu Xiaobei and Qin Ximei.

"Alright, aren’t you going to rest too?" Gu Xiaobei didn’t feel like dealing with Qin Ximei and their mind games; it was far too exhausting.

"I’ll go wash our clothes. Tomorrow, I’ll take you to town to do some shopping. You didn’t bring much to change into."

Gu Xiaobei giggled; her plan to buy new clothes was seen through.

Gu Xiaobei felt that her growing baby was incredibly well-behaved. Except for a few days when she had a cold and felt nauseous without an appetite, her life had returned to normal, surrounded by food, sleep, and leisure.

Even though she had planned on taking a brief rest, the room was so warm that she couldn’t help but doze off.

Eventually, Lu Zhanguo woke her up. Looking out the window, it was already dark. "Oh my, it’s late. Did Yueyue leave already?"

"It’s just past five o’clock. I woke you up for dinner," Lu Zhanguo sat at the edge of the bed, looking at Gu Xiaobei with affection. She looked extremely cute with her rosy cheeks from just waking up.

"Ugh, all I do is eat and sleep, just like a pig being fattened up," Gu Xiaobei complained jokingly as she sat up.

Lu Zhanguo couldn’t help but pinch her rosy cheeks. "You can be my little pig then, very cute."

"You’re such a tease!" Gu Xiaobei playfully rolled her eyes at him. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Lu Zhanguo didn’t understand. "What do you mean?"
