Back To The 80s-Chapter 185: Danger_1
Qin Li closed her eyes directly, listening to Zhang Yufen chatter away. But in her mind, she was thinking about Jin Cheng’s unusual behavior today. It was unpleasantly strange how he was suddenly being nice to her.
......
Just as Li Fengmei predicted, the weather cleared up and as the sun emerged, warming up the temperature. Gu Xiaobei and Li Fengmei had breakfast together. After sending the children off to school, they began harvesting radishes from their vegetable plot.
Gazing at the warm autumn sun, Li Fengmei remarked, "If the weather can stay like this for a while, those who are training in the mountains won’t suffer too much."
Gu Xiaobei agreed. If it wasn’t so cold, and the ground didn’t hold so much moisture, life would be less miserable.
Autumn mornings came with dense fog. Coupled with the rain that had just thawed, they discovered damp radish leaves upon arriving in the field. Walking through the field seemed to drench their pants instantly.
"We can’t dig up the radishes in this condition. Wouldn’t we end up looking like mud monkeys if we try?" Gu Xiaobei commented, inspecting her wet cuffs.
Li Fengmei poked at the radish leaves with her shovel, noting the dew drops that fell off, "We indeed can’t. We’ll probably have to wait until the afternoon to be able to dig them up."
Without fussing to return home immediately, Li Fengmei set about turning over the soil where they had harvested cabbages. After Gu Xiaobei had attempted to shovel a few times, Li Fengmei urged her to rest.
Left with no choice, Gu Xiaobei plonked herself at a side, watching as Li Fengmei took over.
Lu Zhanguo found his way to them. Upon seeing this, Gu Xiaobei stood up and curiously asked, "What brings you here?"
"We’re departing now. I came to let you know." Lu Zhanguo’s voice became significantly warmer when he faced Gu Xiaobei.
"I thought you didn’t depart until the day after tomorrow. Why the sudden departure?" Gu Xiaobei asked, unable to contain her curiosity despite knowing she should not inquire.
"There’s been a last-minute change. Remember what I told you, consult with Fengmei if anything happens." Lu Zhanguo didn’t elaborate further due to Li Fengmei’s presence nearby.
"Sure, don’t worry. I’ll stay home and won’t go anywhere." Gu Xiaobei assured earnestly.
Lu Zhanguo glanced deeply at her one last time before nodding and walking away.
Once Lu Zhanguo was gone, Li Fengmei teased, "You two seem to grow closer by the day."
Laughing, Gu Xiaobei brushed the remark off, "Nothing special, just like any other couple." Yet, her heart fluttered with joy.
Suspending her work, Li Fengmei added, "Though Lu may seem cold on the outside, he’s quite thoughtful."
Gu Xiaobei agreed with a smile. To her, Lu Zhanguo indeed was incredibly considerate and always preferred actions over words.
......
In T City, Gao Dailin listened to Ling Yun describe Jin Cheng’s reactions. He was aware that if Jin Cheng was an undercover agent, he would be a formidable opponent to deal with.
"Sixteenth is just around the corner, what are we going to do?" Ling Yun asked.
A glint of malice flashed in Gao Dailin’s eyes. To this day, he didn’t know the true identity of White Fox, who had been keeping close tabs on him in secret.
"Let Li Hao test him on the sixteenth. If Jin Cheng really is with national security, deal with him directly at Canger Cliff. You pack up and take the kids to Longnan. As soon as I’m done here, I’ll join you." Gao Dailin proposed ruthlessly.
Ling Yun had no choice but to agree, "You must be careful too."
"Sure, it’s nothing. This time, I will let these people experience the consequence of messing with me." Gao Dailin stated grimly.
...
Shen Heng had been in meetings all night. Once the final plan was hammered out, only Li Jianxin remained. Shen Heng asked worryingly, "How’s situation on Jin Cheng’s end?"
"As of now, everything’s fine. We can’t contact Jin Cheng directly with Gao Dailin keeping a close eye. We can’t compromise Jin Cheng’s cover," Li Jianxin replied.
"Ensure Jin Cheng’s safety." Shen Heng instructed again. He knew very well that Jin Cheng was walking on a tightrope with pervasive danger lurking around.
"Don’t worry, we’ll provide support to Jin Cheng at any time." Li Jianxin assured.
However, Shen Heng had other concerns. He knew that Jin Cheng would not withdraw until the mission was completed.
...
In T City, the Yuan sisters were equally worried, especially Yuan Tan. She expressed concern, "Sister, are you really going into the special forces? It’s like a moth flying into a flame."
"I must go. After all, I’m just a pawn. The real White Fox will appear later." Yuan Ye voiced out her thoughts heavily.
"It won’t work. Even if White Fox had the ability to travel underground, he wouldn’t be able to infiltrate the military." Yuan Tan was anxious.
"This time, you stay with mom. If anything happens to me, go to the provincial city and look for Du Chengjiang. He will help you." Yuan Ye instructed.
Yuan Tan shook her head, "No, do you think this can keep me safe? They will never let me go. It’s better if I go with you."
Yuan Ye said nothing more. She knew too well how ruthless that devil could be.
"Sister, why don’t we think of another plan?" Yuan Tan suggested.
"It’s useless! Do you think they haven’t thought of every possible scenario? It’s simply impossible. We have no choice but to take a gamble. Worst case, we die." Yuan Ye said coldly.
...
At the end of October, it seemed destined for turmoil. After seven days since Lu Zhanguo’s departure, the weather shifted again. The sky became overcast, like the bottom of a big pot bearing down on them. Although it was only mid-afternoon, the dark clouds made it feel like dusk, imposing an oppressive atmosphere.
Gu Xiaobei sat indoors knitting under the light when a guard ran up and informed her that Jiujiu had fallen and broken her leg during a physical education class at school. They needed a family member to come over.
Upon hearing the news, anxiety gripped Gu Xiaobei. She quickly grabbed her coat and ran toward the school. But when she arrived at the military compound entrance, she stopped, looking uncertain, and asked the guard, "Who delivered the message?"
The guard answered confidently, "It was a seven or eight-year-old kid. He said he is Jiujiu’s classmate."
Gu Xiaobei found it strange. Why didn’t Dadong or Xiaodong come to call for her? The more she thought about it, the stranger it seemed. Yet, she was worried about Jiujiu. She decided to delay a little and ask Li Fengmei to go with her, thinking that it was safer to have more people around.
But when she reached Li Fengmei’s house, Li Fengmei was not present. In a rush, she returned home to retrieve a military dagger from under her bed, thinking it’d be good for self-defense just in case. Besides, it only took about twenty minutes to reach the school, and there were many houses along the way, so maybe she was being overly worried.
With the dagger secured, Gu Xiaobei ran toward the school. On either side of the road from the troops to the school were soapnut trees. So large that it would take two people to wrap their arms around each. They had lost many leaves due to a recent freeze. Now, whenever the wind blew, the rustle of the soapnuts hitting each other created an eerie atmosphere.
Gu Xiaobei sprinted along the road towards the school, the gloomy clouds seemingly pressing even lower.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of rapid footsteps behind her. Startled, she turned around, only to have a large sack thrown over her head and a blow to her neck that knocked her unconscious. Two people emerged from behind the soapnut trees, picked up Gu Xiaobei, and dashed into the woodland.
As a matter of fact, Jiujiu had indeed broken her leg, and the one who had relayed the message back home was indeed her classmate. Chen Gang was currently carrying Jiujiu towards the barracks when he saw in the distance that Gu Xiaobei had been kidnapped.
Chen Gang hastily set Jiujiu down by a soapnut tree, urging her to sit securely while facing the tree, "Jiujiu, wait here for Dadong and Xiaodong. Once you reach the base, tell them that your aunt has been captured by the bad guys."
