Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Smiling on the Outside, Cursing on the Inside

Gu Jin murmured an acknowledgment and followed Gu Jiajie down a desolate side road, turning a corner to arrive at the gate of a courtyard.

Looking around and not seeing anyone, Gu Jiajie stepped forward to knock on the door.

"Who is it?" A familiar voice came from inside.

"Brother Dali, it’s Jiajie."

Footsteps were heard from inside, and soon the door was opened from within by a slender-looking man.

Gu Jiajie pulled down the cloth covering his face, revealing his features.

The man at the door raised an eyebrow upon seeing them: "Oh, it’s you, kid. What’s up?"

"Wasn’t it just yesterday you mentioned, Brother Dali, that if there was any wild ginseng, you’d like to know? So here I am." Gu Jiajie flashed a bright smile.

The man called Dali glanced at Gu Jiajie, then at Gu Jin, who was bundled up behind him, and stepped aside: "Come in and we’ll talk."

"Alright!"

Gu Jiajie led Gu Jin into the small courtyard.

Once inside, they realized there were over a dozen people, including a burly bald man lounging in a chair, a cigarette between his fingers.

The bald man exhaled smoke, squinting at the three newcomers.

Across from the bald man sat a lean man on a high stool.

The assembly of over a dozen people was clearly a standoff between two sides.

Gu Jiajie and Gu Jin exchanged a glance, both showing a hint of confusion in their eyes.

Dali told the two: "You two wait aside for a moment; let Brother Quan handle things first, then we’ll discuss the ginseng."

"Sure, take your time."

Gu Jiajie maintained a smile, though inwardly he was swearing.

He had no desire to get involved in the current situation; had he known what the courtyard scene would entail, he certainly wouldn’t have brought his cousin here.

"I say, Crippled Old Liu, if there’s nothing else, wash up and go home for a nap." The bald man in the chair spoke up.

The lean man sitting on the tall stool revealed a sinister smile: "Liu Quan, until we resolve today’s matter, neither of us will find peace."

"Hmph! Have you not a clue who you are before wanting my turf? I’ve been in this county for years, and you come here breaking the rules. I’ve held back so far to do you a favor, so don’t bite the hand that feeds you!"

Crippled Old Liu’s face darkened, "You’ve occupied this street for too long, me taking a share is reasonable."

"Rubbish!"

The bald man, Liu Quan, stood up, stretching lazily.

"I will make this clear today: there’s no chance you’ll get a cut. You just got your footing here, and if you want to pick a fight, don’t start with me! Do you even know who backs Liu Quan?"

"I don’t care who’s behind you. Today, I’m not just representing myself, but also the residents of this street!"

Liu Quan threw his cigarette butt to the ground, stamping it out viciously, and said coldly to Crippled Old Liu, "It’s all bullshit!"

Crippled Old Liu stood up, "Don’t push it too far!" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Dali, seeing this, stood alongside his brothers behind Liu Quan, face fierce: "Want a fight, do you?"

The people behind Crippled Old Liu also advanced: "Fight it is!"

Liu Quan’s side: "Come if you dare!"

"Fine, let’s go. I’ll crack your skull with a brick..."

Seeing the confrontation unfold, Gu Jiajie was drenched in a cold sweat, while behind him, Gu Jin couldn’t suppress a grin, though she dared not laugh out loud.

Her lips curled beneath her face covering; if she could, she would have loved to grab a stool and watch the spectacle unfold.

Who would have thought that in this day and age, such a standoff could be so entertaining?
