Chapter 193: Chapter 0193 Preparing the Dowry 1_1

Because Lu Jiang was injured, and Feng Qingyun was staying at her aunt’s house, they first returned to the Wanglou Brigade.

Feng Qingxue had visited the Lu family’s new house several times after it was built whilst delivering food to Lu’s father. Seeing it now, she was still greatly satisfied.

The main house, made of clay brick, sat facing south. It was quite expansive with a reception room in the middle and two bedrooms on the east and west. Unlike other homes with no partitions, this house had walls made of bricks, with a door in each room about the height of a person.

On the outside, there were two rooms on either side with no partitions. The walls, too, were made of clay bricks, topped with thatched roofs. These served as places both for hosting guests and storing grain.

Both the main house and the side rooms were surrounded by a wall made of clay brick which was a little taller than a person. The wall was covered in a dense array of thorns that had been planted while the clay was still wet. A toilet was built at the point where the main household and the northwest room connected. To the south of the east room, leaning against the south wall of the east room and the courtyard wall, a kitchen was set up. The chimney leaned against the outside of the courtyard wall, and a large door was opened to the south of the courtyard wall.

Ever since the house was completed, no one had moved in. It was only tidied up by Lu’s father, along with the children, before they had left to pick up Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue.

Upon entering the house, Feng Qingxue noticed that not only were the doors and windows all mounted, but simple furnishings had also been put in place.

Under the middle hall, a long table was placed. On either side, two small cabinets supported the table. A square table with eight chairs was placed in the middle, with an old-fashioned wooden bed with a footrest in each of the two rooms. In the west room, there was only one wardrobe, while in the east room, there was a wardrobe and a set of high and low cabinets, with a dressing table under the window.

All the furniture was made of old elm wood, polished to be extremely smooth, its natural wood color untouched by paint.

Wang Zhengguo laughed, "Your uncle Lu and I used grain tickets or grain to exchange for old elm from the surrounding villages. Then, we asked a few old carpenters in the brigade for help, thus making these sets of furniture and doors and windows."

Wood was of little value, but the price of grain was high. A bit of food or a few kilos of grain tickets could be exchanged for an elm tree.

This simple furniture hadn’t required much wood.

Wang Zhengguo also remembered to exchange two elm trees to make dowry furniture for his daughter.

Lu Jiang hurriedly said, "Thank you, Uncle Wang. You’ve gone to great pains."

Hearing him refer to himself as "uncle," Wang Zhengguo paused, then laughed, "Since you call me uncle, then there’s no need for you to be polite!" He silently marveled at the connection between Feng Qingxue and Lu Jiang. Now that they had gone through this event together, their relationship was likely to deepen and be invincible to outside interference.

A blush appeared on Feng Qingxue’s face.

She glanced around the room, cleared up the items they had brought with them and then turned to Wang Zhengguo and Lu’s father, "Uncle Lu, Uncle Wang, now that Ajiang is safely home, I can relax. I’m going to pick up Xiaoyun and go home, as I’ve been worried about the vegetables in my garden."

Both Lu’s father and Lu Jiang were eager to marry Feng Qingxue, so they didn’t persuade her to stay. Instead, they said, "Let your Uncle Wang take you."

Lu Jiang, sitting in a wheelchair, directed Niu Yibao to deliver the big and small bags, as well as the thermos, wash basin, and Gangzi enamel jar that they brought to the donkey cart for Feng Qingxue. He said to the stunned Lu’s father and Wang Zhengguo, "These are wedding gifts to Qingxue from the doctors and nurses at the hospital. She will take them home first and bring them back tomorrow!"

Wang Zhengguo laughed, and Feng Qingxue glared at him.

Beyond glaring at him, she had no other strategies.

As such, upon reaching Wang Fengqiao’s house to fetch Feng Qingyun, Wang Fengqiao naturally pulled her aside to ask what had happened.

"Lu Jiang was injured on the battlefield. His comrade sent me a telegram, and I went to see him. Now, with permission from his troop, he has returned home to recover. I came to bring Xiaoyun home." Upon hearing Wang Fengqiao ask about Lu Jiang’s condition, Feng Qingyun smiled slightly, "He needs to rest quietly for a few months, and then another surgery will be performed."
