Back to the 1980s: Transmigrated as the Bigshot's Pampered Wife-Chapter 27: Resigning and Setting Up a Stall
Gu Jiaojiao’s eyes widened in surprise. "Mom, you learned to cook like a professional chef back in the countryside?"
Su’s mother shot a reproachful look at Mr. Su. She thought her daughter-in-law was looking down on them for being from the countryside.
The three members of the Su family all thought the same thing, except for Su Shuochi. He could see that his wife was genuinely happy.
"Mom, you’re amazing! In a couple of years, you could quit your job and go into business... open a restaurant."
Gu Jiaojiao had wanted to say "go into business," but she was afraid of startling the Su family, so she changed it to "open a restaurant," which was easier for them to accept.
Sure enough, Su’s mother said happily, "Is my cooking really good enough to open a restaurant? Jiaojiao, my job is so hard. The organization only gave it to me because of Chi."
"Then you should just quit and come home. We can make some snacks and sell them at the factory gate in the compound."
"But wouldn’t that be even more embarrassing?" Su’s mother asked uncertainly.
"What’s embarrassing about it? We wouldn’t be stealing or robbing anyone, and setting up a stall is allowed now."
"Then I’ll go quit tomorrow. That job really isn’t for me." Su’s mother already felt a weight lift off her shoulders, even before resigning.
"Jiaojiao, should I quit my job too?" Mr. Su asked cautiously.
"Dad, are you unhappy with your job too?"
"No, it’s fine. It’s too fine, actually. I’m basically getting paid for doing nothing."
Mr. Su was from the countryside. Because his son was a hero, the organization had arranged jobs for both him and his wife.
In those days, every job post was filled, one person per spot. Without connections or a background, finding a job was anything but easy.
Moreover, since Mr. Su and Su’s mother were from the countryside, the jobs the organization arranged were sinecures.
The kind where you get paid for nothing. Mr. Su was a man, and men weren’t as petty as women.
Knowing he was a hero’s father, they were even less likely to ostracize him. But he truly had no work to do—not because there wasn’t any, but because he didn’t have the skills for it.
The factory management had no intention of training Mr. Su, figuring it was better to let him be idle than to waste time teaching him.
In order to provide his son with better nutrition, Mr. Su could only swallow his pride and go collect his unearned wages every day.
Su’s mother, however, wasn’t so lucky. The women were all very calculative and wouldn’t give her special treatment just because she was a hero’s mother.
Instead, they would ostracize her, make things difficult for her, and humiliate her with snide remarks. But for the sake of her son and daughter, she endured it all.
"Chi, what do you think? Is what Jiaojiao said feasible?"
"It is." Su Shuochi also knew his parents lived cautiously. They were used to life in the countryside.
Moving to the compound had made them feel out of place. Other people planted flowers in their empty yard spaces; his family planted all sorts of vegetables.
Still, he didn’t want to go back to the countryside. It wasn’t that the countryside was bad.
It was that he was disabled. His parents would be subjected to gossip behind their backs, and it would come from all the familiar faces of their fellow villagers.
Here, they were surrounded by strangers. It wasn’t as painful to be talked about behind their backs by people they didn’t know.
Gu Jiaojiao saw the two elders staring at her with hopeful eyes, the fragrant meal on the table having lost all its appeal.
She immediately said, "Mom, do you know how to make crystal noodles or liangpi? Crystal noodles are the kind made from potatoes or sweet potatoes."
"I know how to make both of those. If you like them, I’ll make some for you to try tomorrow."
"We can set up a stall and sell liangpi and crystal noodles. We could also sell some meat buns and savory pancakes. You two can go quit your jobs tomorrow, and Shu Ci and I will go get a mobile food cart made..."
The Su family ate with great relish while listening intently to Gu Jiaojiao explain the process of running a food stall.
After dinner, Su Qinchun proactively went to wash the dishes. It was as if she could see a better life beckoning to her.
Gu Jiaojiao drew a picture of a mobile food cart, and as soon as Mr. Su saw it, he exclaimed, "I know how to make that!"
"Then we’ll go buy the materials tomorrow," Gu Jiaojiao said readily.
"We just need to buy a few wheels. We have wood at home." Mr. Su had always enjoyed woodworking; he had made all their tables, chairs, and benches himself.
Other families used honeycomb briquettes for fuel, but the Su family occasionally burned firewood, so whenever he saw wood around the compound, he would collect it and bring it home.
When they had talked enough, Su Shuochi fetched hot water and brought it back to the room for Gu Jiaojiao’s bath. He himself washed with cold water.
After her bath, Gu Jiaojiao habitually entered her space to get some things ready to sell the next day.
’Oh my god!’ As soon as she entered the space, she saw an area swirling with white mist. Gu Jiaojiao walked closer out of curiosity to take a look.
About two square meters of black soil had appeared in the space. ’What’s this for?’
As she got closer, she saw a wooden sign that read: *Reward for healing a patient paralyzed for many years.*
The black soil could be used to grow medicinal herbs and crops. The more patients she healed, the more unexpected rewards she would receive.
’Something this good actually exists?’
Gu Jiaojiao was thrilled. She had thought the space only contained the supplies she had stored in it before.
’Those are already good things that others don’t have. If there’s also a continuous stream of rewards, especially land, that means there will be a water source too...’
She was overjoyed.
When Gu Jiaojiao came out, she still had a smile on her face.
"Jiaojiao, did your Immortal master give you something good again?" Su Shuochi asked, seeing his wife’s eyes crinkle with laughter.
"Mhm, my master gave me a plot of land. I can use it to grow medicinal herbs or vegetables."
"This broken... rock can also grow things? That’s great! We’ll go to the black market tomorrow and buy some medicinal herb seeds or seedlings to plant."
"The land my master gave me isn’t ordinary soil. The herbs grown there will definitely be rare and precious, haha..."
Gu Jiaojiao hung a few IV bottles of detoxification and anti-inflammatory fluids for Su Shuochi, then took out a bottle of juice and some bread.
"You be careful now. Go to sleep as soon as you take the needles out. My body hasn’t fully recovered yet, so I can’t stay up late."
Gu Jiaojiao let out a delicate yawn. The white mist in the space was spiritual energy; she had inhaled some of it earlier and fell asleep quickly.
Su Shuochi watched his precious wife sleeping soundly beside him, his thoughts turning to the perilous events of the afternoon.
He massaged his legs. Although he still couldn’t feel anything in them, there was a distinct ache in his lower back.
His wife had said the toxins hadn’t been fully purged yet. The places where he had regained feeling really hurt, but he liked this pain.
It wasn’t that he was a masochist; the feeling simply meant there was hope. While he was lost in thought, the IV drip was nearly finished.
Su Shuochi drank the beverage, which was different from yesterday’s. It was on a completely different level from the best sodas and orange juices in the mortal world.
His wife had asked if he wanted to give some to his parents, but it wasn’t that he wanted to keep it all for himself; it was that they wouldn’t be able to explain it.
Their family was now eating meat, eggs, and high-quality rice every day. That was already enough; there was no need to complicate things.
Besides, he had also bought soda and orange juice from the store for his parents and little sister to drink.
But they all wanted to save it for him and his wife. *Sigh!*
After taking care of everything, Su Shuochi drifted off to sleep as well. His sleep quality had been excellent lately.
He didn’t know if it was because he was eating well, or because she was by his side.
Before his injury, his days were filled with either training or missions, and he would fall asleep the moment he hit the bed. After getting hurt, he spent all day in bed but rarely slept soundly.
Mr. Su and Su’s mother, however, were too excited to sleep well all night. They got up at the crack of dawn. Su’s mother cooked millet porridge and steamed buns.
Mr. Su, for his part, studied the design for the pushcart, holding off on starting the work for fear of waking his son and daughter-in-law.
