Chapter 147: Chapter 147: The Eerie Scream

Vaguely, there seemed to be a white figure floating behind the black cat.

Zhang Guifang was so scared that the hair on the back of her neck stood up.

Suddenly, the white shadow swooped towards her, and Zhang Guifang let out a scream, rolling her eyes and fainting on the spot.

Her scream woke up the Su Family who were sound asleep.

Su Xiaoxiao quickly moved her brother’s white shirt back onto the clothesline.

Then she swiftly tossed a sausage over the courtyard wall.

The black cat, which was recruited at the last minute to sneak into the house for food, saw the sausage fall outside the wall and pounced on it with a "meow".

With a "creak", the door opened, and Su Wenbing came out with his hair everywhere: "Who, who is out there?"

Only the rustling of the wind through the leaves answered him, and uncertain, Su Wenbing knocked on Su Xiaoxiao’s window: "Sister, are you alright?"

He thought he had heard a woman screaming just now; could it have been his sister?

But he quickly dismissed that thought.

From the room came Su Xiaoxiao’s muffled voice: "Brother, what’s up? I’m fine."

"As long as you’re okay."

Maybe he had misheard.

Su Wenbing scratched his head, scanned the courtyard without finding anything unusual, and the strange scream did not reappear.

He pulled his coat tighter around himself and went back to sleep.

Early the next morning, before Su Xiaoxiao could open her eyes, a familiar sharp voice came from outside: "You, Wife of the Eldest, come out here!"

Wasn’t that her miserly grandmother Wang Chunhua? What had gotten into her so early in the morning?

Su Xiaoxiao immediately got out of bed. Her mother always suffered bullying in front of this grandmother, so she needed to go out and help.

She hurriedly threw on her clothes, slipped on her shoes, and went out.

Upon stepping out, she saw her grandmother Wang Chunhua standing in the courtyard, hands on her hips, pointing at Liu Cuilan’s nose and scolding her.

"Wife of the Eldest, for so many years, the Second Family hasn’t treated your family poorly. How could you be so harsh? Look at what you’ve done to the Wife of the Second Son! Don’t you feel any shame?"

Hearing this, Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but burst out laughing. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Wang Chunhua turned her glare towards the sound: "You little wench, what are you laughing at?"

"Oh, it’s nothing, just curious to see someone lying through their teeth for the first time."

With that, she pulled over Su Jianwu and pointed at Wang Chunhua, saying, "See? We should learn from Grandma and Second Aunt. Their faces are thicker than the city wall; if you two master this skill, you’ll get an extra bowl when begging."

Wang Chunhua’s face immediately darkened: "You little brat, what nonsense are you spouting? Who’s thick-skinned?"

Su Xiaoxiao scratched her face: "Then maybe I heard wrong. If I remember correctly, since the day my dad had his accident, Second Aunt cut all ties with us, so where’s this not treating us poorly bit coming from?"

Before Wang Chunhua could speak, she added knowingly, "I got it. Grandma was talking about how when we were starving to death, my mom went to beg for food and Second Aunt threw a basin of dirty water at her. Or maybe it was when you and Second Aunt took the village chief’s bride price and forced me to marry his foolish son, or perhaps it was when you heard I got a job at the department store and came running to claim benefits?"

The villagers gathered around started murmuring upon hearing this.

"This Su family’s second branch and this old lady are truly no good."

"Exactly, they hurriedly distanced themselves when trouble happened, and now they want to take advantage seeing things got better."

"Pah, shameless, who knows what scheme they’re plotting this time."

Zhang Guifang, supported by her eldest son Su Zhiqiang, had bandages wrapped around her left leg and right arm, and several cuts on her face, looking pitifully miserable, yet no one at the scene felt sympathy for her.

Wang Chunhua was also flustered and her face alternated between turning blue and red: "Even if your Second Aunt was wrong in the past, she’s still your elder. How could you deliberately scare her, causing her to fall like this? That’s simply outrageous."

Indeed, after Zhang Guifang had regained her composure, she believed that the Su family deliberately frightened her, causing her fall, so she brought the old lady and her son to demand an explanation.

"Alright, if you say we scared her, where’s the evidence? When did we scare her? Why did we scare her? Where did we scare her?"

"Last night, under the west wall, in the middle of the night..."

Zhang Guifang, seeing Su Xiaoxiao’s appearance, was even more convinced that last night’s incident had something to do with her, and spoke unwittingly following her lead. Mid-sentence, she was suddenly interrupted by Liu Cuilan, who had a dark expression.

"Zhang Guifang, what were you doing, up in the middle of the night outside my courtyard wall?"

"I..."

Zhang Guifang was stumped by this question. She had initially come to check on the Mugwort business opportunities, but not only did she not find out anything, she ended up getting frightened and falling instead.

But of course, she couldn’t say that to Liu Cuilan.

"Yeah, what were you doing sneaking around a house wall at night, were you up to something shady?"

"Must be some kind of psychological issue. Why else would anyone be lurking around at night under someone else’s wall?"

"Either that or some other ulterior motive."

With those words, the crowd’s gaze towards Zhang Guifang became peculiar.

Standing nearest to her, several people visibly took a step back in unison, the disdain on their faces obvious.

Zhang Guifang: "..."

She couldn’t explain it clearly; she had thought the Su family had deliberately scared her to extract some money. But who would have thought...

Her face turned crimson, unable to speak, yet Wang Chunhua turned to her: "Second Daughter-in-law, you tell everyone, what were you doing here last night? Surely you were delivering something to the Eldest Family and they ended up scaring you."

Wang Chunhua spoke with indignation, but after she finished, she noticed no one was responding to her.

"Coming over in the middle of the night, Second Aunt, were you delivering something or were you planning to scare someone to death?"

Su Xiaoxiao spoke with a grin.

Hearing this, everyone’s gaze returned to Zhang Guifang.

Zhang Guifang’s face turned beet red, and in a panic she tugged at Su Zhiqiang’s sleeve, whispering, "Eldest Son, forget it. Let’s not pursue this. Take mom home quickly; I have a stomachache."

Su Zhiqiang, hearing her say she had a stomachache, urgently helped her to leave, but a gust of wind blew off Zhang Guifang’s hat from her head.

Suddenly, everyone’s eyes widened: Wow, such a shiny bald head!

Zhang Guifang, ever since being struck by lightning last time, hadn’t been able to grow her hair back, and her head under the hat was still bald and shiny.

Her face darkened, and she hurriedly bent down to pick up the hat from the ground, only for another gust of wind to blow it away in a flash.
