Chapter 54: Episode 54: A Mother’s Rage

Roxy had forgotten one thing.

This was the beastworld, where everyone was prey, even their own children. She was meant to be prey, but she ended up being the one prey everyone needed.

That’s why when Roxy found her baby, who almost caused her death, she saw red.

"DROP IT!"

The scream tore from Roxy’s throat, raw and terrified, shredding the silence of the cabin. Everyone’s eyes fell on her in horror.

Why was Roxy awake? She didn’t die?!

Of course, they were happy she was alive, but the murderous look on her face made them jump.

She didn’t think, she didn’t care if she had just woken up, and her body felt weak and drained of all her blood. All she saw was the massive silver wolf looming over the furs near the stove.

All she saw was the tiny body of her newborn son, the third and smallest one, clamped firmly between Kaelen’s saliva-slicked jaws.

He’s eating him.

This fucking dog was eating her puppy that she worked so hard for and even gave up her life to give birth to.

The thought hit her with the force of a physical blow, and nothing else mattered, not the affection she had built over the last month. All she knew was that Kaelen was eating her baby, and everyone watched on.

"KAELEN!" Roxy shrieked, scrambling up from the pillows despite her body screaming in protest, her muscles weak and trembling. She grabbed the nearest object and hurled it at the wolf king’s head.

It bounced off his thick skull with a hollow sound.

"MOON MOTHER!" Sera and Mara exclaimed in unison.

But Roxy was very angry, she was filled with rage, and she wanted with all her might to give this big wolf a beating it would never forget.

She forgot that she was just a human; with just one bite, she might be gone from this world.

All she knew was that anyone, any male who dared to harm her child, she would kill them.

Kaelen could sense it.

This female was filled with rage.

He flinched, his ears flattening against his head. He turned his massive head toward her, the baby still dangling from his mouth like a rag doll. His icy blue eyes weren’t filled with bloodlust, though. They were wide, confused, and dilated.

Roxy hit me, Roxann hit me... she hit me... she is angry at me...

That was all Kaelen understood, but didn’t know why.

"Don’t you dare bite down!" Roxy finally broke down sobbing, she slid off the bed and crawled across the rug, ignoring the soreness in her hips. "Spit him out right now! Spit my baby out right now, you rabid dog!"

Kaelen’s heart thudded in his chest as he whined. It was a pathetic sound that vibrated through his chest.

He lowered his head slowly and opened his jaws. The baby dropped into Roxy’s hand. The puppy didn’t scream; he just let out a tiny, annoyed squeak, shook his wet fur, and curled into a ball, seeking the warmth of the fire.

Roxy’s heart, which was beating fast, slowly calmed down.

With the help of Mara and Sera, they helped her back into bed, where she leaned back on Zarek, pulling the other two pups closer to her chest.

Kaelen backed away, his tail tucked between his legs. He shifted back into his human form, naked as day, and he shivered slightly, looking at Roxy with an expression of sadness.

Roxy didn’t like anyone seeing her assets, so she tossed him a fur to cover up.

He caught it and tied it around his waist.

"Roxy?" he whispered, reaching a hand out. "Did I do anything wrong? I was moving him?!"

"Moving him?!" Roxy yelled, feeling the urge to hit him in the head again. She shielded her pups away from him. She was panting, sweat matting her hair to her forehead. "You had his head in your mouth, Kaelen! In your mouth!"

"That’s the way we carry them!" Kaelen explained, his voice trembling because Roxy was clearly misunderstanding him. He looked at his hands, then at the pups. "The third one was cold, your body had gone cold, we all thought you had died. I have no hands in my wolf form, so I carried him to the warmth. It is how we carry our young!"

Roxy froze.

She pieced everything together, remembering all the documentaries she watched about Lions, wolves, and other predators, and it was indeed the way they carry their young.

Even the cats carry them that way.

Her head throbbed. I may have overreacted just a little bit.

She looked at the baby. He was sleeping peacefully near the stove. There wasn’t a scratch on him, and she realized that she indeed overreacted.

"I don’t care," Roxy hissed, wiping the tears from her face. "I don’t care if it’s the way. I am not a wolf, Kaelen. And my pups are basically half-human half half-wolf."

"What’s a human?" Mara, who had been watching from the side, suddenly asked.

"My species," Roxy replied, and Mara’s face formed an O in understanding, though she had never heard of that species before in her life.

Roxy pointed a finger at Kaelen.

"When I saw you carrying him like that, I thought you wanted to kill him. I woke up from dying, and I thought you were eating our son for a snack!"

How do you think that would make me feel? Was I not enough for you?

Roxy took steady breaths.

I am glad it was not the case.

Zarek soothed her nerves by patting her head, though he was looking at the innocent pups on her chest with a murderous gaze.

The only person capable of eating the pups was right behind her!

Kaelen flinched at the accusation, as if she had slapped him. "I would never... I would die before I harmed a hair on their heads. They are my blood!"

"I know!" Roxy sobbed, her shoulders relaxing. "I know you would! But you are a beast, Kaelen! And my instincts say that teeth on a baby are bad!"

Kaelen finally conceded. "No more!" she commanded, her voice turning hard. "You want to move them? Use your hands. Use the hands I taught you to build houses with, if you ever put your teeth on them again... I will give you a good beating."

Even if I am the one who can be eaten!

Roxy reached out and touched his cheek with her free hand; he leaned into it like an obedient kitten. "You frightened me, Wolfy. Use your hands, please..."

He slowly nodded because he knew that anything she commanded, he would obey.

Zarek’s eyes narrowed. His lips curled in a sneer of pure disgust.

"Disgusting dogs," Zarek spat.

Kaelen stiffened, baring his teeth, a growl building in his throat, but Roxy turned her head and glared at Zarek.

"They are my children, Z." She warned silently.

Zarek pressed his lips into a firm line.

"They smell of fur," Zarek stated. He gazed at the babies with so much hatred. "They have ears. Pointed ears. And tails."

He poked a clawed finger at the first pup. The baby whined and batted at his finger with tiny, clumsy paws.

Zarek recoiled as if he had been burned. His gold eyes turned into slits.

"It touched me!" he exclaimed, looking at Roxy with horror. "The mongrel touched me!"

"He’s my child," Roxy said, her voice tired but firm. "Deal with it."

Zarek was flabbergasted. He looked at the babies again. He hated them to the core, and every instinct in his dragon brain screamed to incinerate them.

They were not worth his time, and they were the offspring of his rival. But then he looked at Roxy.

Would he lose her again if he did that?

He saw the way she placed them so close to her chest protectively. He saw the way she used all the ounce of her life to give birth to them, her blood on the furs.

He realized, with a sinking feeling, that she loved these little rats.

And if he hurt them... she would never forgive him. She would hate him. And that was a fate worse than tolerating a few puppies.

Zarek sighed. It was a long, dramatic one that caused Roxy to shiver.

"They are.... Small," Zarek conceded, crossing his arms. "And ugly."

"They are beautiful!" Kaelen snapped, standing up.

"Silence, dog!" Zarek didn’t even look at him. He kept his eyes on Roxy. "They are yours, Roxy... That is the only reason they live."

Roxy suddenly groaned, gulping down.

That was enough talking, I think I am going to lose my soul again!

I need food!

"I’m starving," Roxy announced. "I feel like I could eat a horse!"

"I can catch a horse," Kaelen offered immediately, stepping forward. "There is a herd near the valley."

"No," Roxy shook her head, her voice turning soft. "No meat. I need something sweet and juicy. I need fruit."

Zarek stood up instantly, "I will go get some for you immediately!"

"I will go first!" Kaelen growled.

Without another word, they both turned and bolted for the door. They jammed in the frame for a second, shoulder to shoulder, shoving each other, before bursting out into the courtyard.

"I FLY FASTER!" Zarek roared, shifting in his dragon form mid-air.

"I RUN FASTER!" Kaelen howled, shifting into his silver wolf form and tearing into the forest.

Roxy watched them go, the door swinging on its hinges.

She turned to the female wolves, and they all laughed.

"Men," Roxy sighed, shaking her head. Mara immediately helped her with water. "They are just children with bigger forms."

"Let’s help you clean you and the babies." Sera offered, in reverence.

"Thank you..." Roxy whispered weakly.
