Chapter 39: The Egg Summon?

It was morning again, and the academy stirred with the quiet rustle of students waking up to what should have been another normal day. Some stretched lazily under their covers, while others rubbed the sleep from their eyes, yawning as they prepared to change into their academy uniforms.

But then, a familiar chime echoed through every dorm—an academy-wide broadcast.

It was Day’s voice.

An announcement.

Kairos, who was halfway through pulling on his shirt, froze for a second. Everyone knew what Day’s voice meant at this point—it wasn’t good. Not after what had happened with Ashen. That whole event had left more than just bruises on the student body. It had shaken their very perception of safety.

The impact of Ashen’s atrocities still echoed in the academy halls like ghosts yet to be exorcised.

And with Darnell yet to return, Kairos could only assume this had something to do with the state of the first years. The last battle had taken its toll on many of them—bodies broken, spirits bruised. Recovery was slow, and there weren’t many who could assist.

Silver, the academy’s top healer, had been overworked. She was the only one capable of treating the worst cases, and while others helped where they could, the burden fell squarely on her shoulders.

It must have been exhausting—one woman, dozens of patients. There was no way the academy could realistically expect half its student body to recover and still survive the hunt scheduled for next week. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

So, just like the last time... it was a free day.

Kairos exhaled slowly, pulling away from his uniform and instead turned toward Carlos, who was already rustling through his casual wear.

"Mind if I borrow something again?" Kairos asked, a soft tone of habitual courtesy in his voice.

Carlos nodded and handed him a set. Kairos pulled on a clean white hoodie and paired it with black trousers. He slid into his own academy sneakers, not bothering to borrow those from Carlos—there were boundaries, after all. He didn’t want to come off as the kind of guy who freeloaded off his roommate’s goodwill.

"Let’s head to the cafeteria," Kairos suggested, brushing his hair back and moving to the door.

But Carlos flopped onto his bed with a loud thump and turned to his side, yawning.

"No thank you! I’ll sleep in... Help me pick up some food," he mumbled into his pillow, barely conscious.

Kairos chuckled. This was the norm. Most students loathed early mornings. Teenagers their age didn’t go to bed on time, and waking up early for class felt like a punishment from the gods.

Some jokingly called it the age of "vampire youths."

But Kairos was different—more energetic, more disciplined. Back home, he never had time for leisure. His mornings started before the sun had fully risen, and he had carried that routine with him here.

"Ok," he muttered, stepping out and gently shutting the door behind him.

The dorm corridors were eerily quiet. No loud chatter. No clamor of running students. Just silence.

Kairos walked slowly, allowing his thoughts to drift. It had been a while since he’d walked alone like this. Usually, Darnell and Carlos were with him. Their company had rubbed off on him in unexpected ways.

A voice interrupted his peace, low and feral in tone.

"Shadow wolf hungry... Let’s eat some meat today."

Kairos blinked, a subtle smirk playing on his lips.

"Glad to see you’re okay," he whispered back under his breath. "So you benefit from me eating?"

No reply. As always, the shadow wolf didn’t answer questions. It spoke when it wanted, and usually only when it was hungry—or angry.

He finally reached the cafeteria. It was less crowded than usual, which was a relief. He went straight to the counter and placed two orders—one for himself and another for Carlos.

The woman behind the counter worked efficiently, packing his order and Carlos’ into a separate plastic plate.

"Thank you, ma’am," Kairos said, taking the trays and heading toward an empty table.

He slid into the seat and wasted no time. Like a starved beast, he dug into his food, devouring every bite with animalistic focus. It was one of the best things about the academy—the food was actually delicious, well-seasoned, and warm.

Today’s dish was no exception.

He paused for a moment, halfway through, staring at Carlos’ portion.

The thought crossed his mind: Should I just eat both?

He banished the idea immediately with a frown. No. That would be low.

He returned to his plate, nearly finishing his meal when a voice floated from behind him.

"Hello, Kairos."

It was a girl’s voice—soft, confident, and deliberately poised.

Kairos heard it clearly, but he didn’t turn. Didn’t flinch. He simply continued eating.

Footsteps approached, and then two girls sat opposite him.

He recognized one of them instantly.

Lyza.

Her gaze didn’t meet his. In fact, she folded her arms and kept her eyes downcast, struggling to hold her emotions together.

"Thank you for defeating Ashen," she whispered. "I heard he was the one who must’ve killed my brother. I already thanked Lina... but she said I should thank you instead."

She bowed her head even lower, voice trembling.

"Thank you really... for helping me."

Then, without waiting for a response, Lyza stood up abruptly. Her chair scraped against the floor as she hurried out of the cafeteria, a hand brushing against her cheek—whether to hide her tears or wipe them, Kairos didn’t know.

He didn’t say a word.

Didn’t need to.

But internally, he acknowledged her pain.

So they’ve blamed the beatings... and Mike’s death on Ashen. This is turning out more favorable to me than expected.

He turned to the other girl, who was still seated and watching him with a peculiar intensity.

She’s not leaving? he thought. Wasn’t she with Lyza?

The girl finally exhaled and spoke.

"I’m Mirel Caen, from the Aether’s family. I’ve seen your recent achievements. You’re strong. A summoner with a powerful summon... but you have no backing. How would you like to become part of the Aether’s faction?"

Straightforward. Direct. No sugarcoating.

Kairos’s gaze narrowed.

The Aether’s family was one of the larger factions, and Mirel belonged to a subordinate branch—sent to scout talented students at the academy. She had likely rushed to him before anyone else could.

But from the cold look in Kairos’s eyes, she knew something was wrong.

He’s not impressed.

"No thank you," Kairos said, standing up. "Even if you are from one of the big factions, I’m not interested."

He grabbed the trays—his and Carlos’—and walked away.

If this had been the old Kairos, he would’ve accepted in a heartbeat. But not anymore. He was different now—wiser. Stronger. His summon, the shadow wolf, was more than enough power to start something on his own.

Behind him, Mirel’s face twisted in disbelief.

How dare this brat walk away from me! Just because I approached him? Arrogant fool.

She stood and raised her voice.

"What sort of fool refuses such an offer?!"

Kairos stopped.

Got his attention.

"If you don’t take my offer, people like Rivet and the second years will keep hurting you! Join the Aether’s faction and you’ll be protected! You’ll gain real power!"

Her voice cracked with frustration and urgency.

Kairos smiled.

"Even if I wanted to join a faction," he said, turning back briefly, "I wouldn’t do it because some end-of-the-barrel lister asked me to. Take your offer somewhere else."

Her fists clenched. Her eyes twitched in rage.

If it weren’t for the academy’s new anti-violence policies—put in place after Ashen’s incident—she would’ve attacked him right there.

Just for now... Kairos. I’ll let you off the hook.

But Kairos knew exactly what he was doing. People always wanted what they couldn’t have. That was human nature. And by rejecting her, belittling her, he had ensured she’d never forget him.

One day, when he would be down... she would help.

He laughed quietly to himself, dropped off the trays at the counter, and walked out.

Meanwhile...

Deep within the swirling depths of Kairos’ mindscape, the shadow wolf sat before the large egg.

Its glowing eyes were unblinking, locked on the shell with primal focus.

It remained silent, its breath calm. But beneath its paws, blue searing-like energy poured outward—energy that resembled the burning essence possessed by Ashen’s Giant spider—Garan.

The energy wrapped around the base of the egg, pulsating softly.

Then, slowly... the egg gave a gentle shake.

A small crack formed on its surface.

The shadow wolf growled lowly, its voice like thunder inside a cavern.

"I was only able to consume an ample of Garan’s energy before Kairos called me back..."

It snarled, "Just a little bit more, brother. Just a few more summons to consume... and you will be free."
