Awakening of the Scheming Wife-Chapter 136: Equal partners? No!
"You sure that they are in cahoots and there is no other reason?" Vernon asked to make sure.
That was the conclusion he got after thinking about the problem as well. But he felt he could be missing something. That was why he wanted to know Helena’s perspective to see if there were any other answers to this problem.
Helena shook her head, "They are definitely in cahoots, but..."
"But?" Vernon looked at her with interest.
"But they are not exactly partners. They aren’t on equal footing in this so-called partnership." Helena declared without any doubt.
"Oh? Why do you say that?" Vernon chuckled and asked. He could already guess what she was thinking, and he could also hear her thoughts, but he wanted to hear her say it.
He wanted Helena to share all her thoughts with him without hiding anything. Maybe that could be the first step to change their relationship from ending the way it ended in their previous life.
Helena did not think much about his thoughts and spoke seriously, "Because the one who got kidnapped wasn’t Sister Jemma. But Ethan did not know that. He was foolishly still thinking that the creepy prince had kidnapped Sister Jemma and started throwing around words and accusations as he wished at us."
Vernon blinked his eyes. He was really amused at how she would scold the Prince as creepy at every chance she got. He wanted to laugh, but the matter at hand was serious, and he shouldn’t do that.
"The Creepy Prince told Ethan that he would kidnap Sister Jemma. There, the collaboration ended. When the Creepy prince failed to abduct Sister Jemma and changed his target to her sister instead, he did not find the need to inform this matter to Ethan at all. If their so-called partnership was as special as Ethan had thought, then the Prince wouldn’t constrain such an important piece of update in their plan.
"So, either Ethan’s part in the plan wasn’t important at all, or whatever he had to do was done before the plan ever started. Since his usefulness was ended, the creepy prince threw Ethan into the trash like he was. I should say, the creepy Prince is a little smart in his own way."
Vernon couldn’t help but laugh this time. Even Helena chuckled along with him.
"But what could be Ethan’s part in this plan? What could he possibly do to help the creepy prince abduct Sister Jemma?" Helena expressed her doubts.
Vernon thought for a couple of minutes, but he couldn’t get any answer at all. He shook his head, "I can’t understand either."
"I think we should ask someone more involved," Helena suggested.
"You mean..."
"Yes. Call them," Helena nodded and instructed.
Vernon nodded and took his phone out.
"Switch the speaker on," Helena said.
Vernon obeyed.
"Hello. Why are you calling me at this time? Shouldn’t you be on the plane by now?" Jemma’s voice came through the speaker.
"Is brother by your side?" Vernon asked.
"Yes. What’s the matter?" Vincent was the one who replied.
"Brother, are you very familiar with Ethan?" Vernon asked.
"Ethan? Which Ethan are you talking about?" Vincent asked in doubt.
"My classmate Ethan," Vernon replied.
"Oh, him? I do know him. But we aren’t very close. Why do you ask about him?" Vincent was confused.
"Wait? Ethan? You mean the one who has eyeglasses and always tries his best to look like a dignified and reserved man?" Jemma interrupted and asked.
"Yes, that’s him. How do you know him, Sister-in-law?" Vernon asked.
"Why are you asking about him? I always find him a bit creepy, no matter how decent he tries to portray himself as. Don’t tell me. Is he your good friend? Vernon, I look down on you." Jemma said with disgust.
"..." Vernon felt attacked for no reason. "First, you tell me, how do you know him?"
"He is an investor in the film I am acting in. Why do you ask?" Jemma did not drag the matter on anymore and answered him immediately, seeing how he did not fight her back at the jab she just took at him.
"I think, I mean, we think that he is involved in ’your’ kidnapping." Vernon said, emphasizing the word ’your’.
There was no sound from the phone, and Vernon asked, "Do you have any idea how he could get involved at all?"
"Hmm..." Jemma sounded like she was thinking before she replied, "I think I can understand. I mean, he could have some access to my schedule as the investor of my film. If someone wanted any details about me or my location, they could reach out to him. But why would he want to help others kidnap me? I don’t have anything against him as long as I can remember."
"So, that was how he got involved in this matter! I think his target isn’t you but Helena," Vernon said.
"Helena? Why would he target her? Do they have any feud?" Jemma asked.
"I don’t know either, Sister Jemma. Who knows what these psychos are thinking exactly? They wanted to make trouble around us for no reason. He even tried to instigate Vernon against me by saying that I instigated that creepy prince against you." Helena laid out her grievances in front of her sister Jemma with her whiny voice.
She was really used to being a baby in front of Vincent and Jemma.
"Aww. How awful. Don’t worry, Helena. No matter what others say, neither Vernon nor any of us would believe anything against you," Jemma’s voice softened by many degrees when she talked to Helena.
She really likes this cute younger sister.
"Thank you, Sister Jemma. But we still have to find their motives in doing this," Helena cooed in the first sentence, and said the second one very seriously in anger.
"Yes, yes. We should. Now tell us what exactly happened so we could understand as well," Jemma said.
"It’s like this, sister-in-law," Vernon started with Ethan’s phone call and told them all the details of the conversation they had. Then he continued with their analyzed conclusions as well.
"We understand. Now that you told us everything, you both relax. We will take care of this matter. Now you both should be on the plane on the way to your honeymoon. You don’t have to get distracted by this matter. You kids should just enjoy yourselves without worrying about a thing. Do you understand?" Jemma said and also nagged.
"Yes, leave this matter to us," Vincent nodded along. As a man of very few words, he did not say anything more than that.
Helena and Vernon looked at each other and nodded, "Okay. We are leaving for the airport now. I hope everything will be settled before we come back. I think we won’t have any phone signals at our destination. So, we won’t be able to reach you until we are back."
"I know. I know. You don’t have to worry about anything. By the time you both are back, we will even arrange a small welcome party once all the troubles are ended, alright? Now leave without thinking too much," Jemma said with a smile.
Vincent added a few words, supporting his wife’s words, assuring the young couple to have the trip free of worries.
They hung up on the call, and Vernon and Helena immediately started for the airport.
Since it was their private plane, they were able to delay the boarding time by a couple of hours.
On their way to the airport, Helena messaged her people to check into Ethan. She couldn’t understand why he targeted her and even wanted to destroy her.
Vernon heard her thoughts and sighed to himself. Even though he had gone through the past life, he still did not know the reason behind Ethan’s actions.
At that time, he had punched Ethan and thrown him out of his social life. From then on, he did not pose any threat to them. So, he had actually forgotten about having such a friend.
Does he have some feelings for Helena? So did he want to destroy his relationship with her so that they would divorce and he would get a chance with her?
He turned to look at Helena and expressed his doubt.
Helena frowned, "Could that be the reason? No way, right? I mean, he never really interacted with me much. If he really had any sort of feelings for me, shouldn’t he show at least a couple of signs even if he couldn’t bring himself to confess to me?"
Vernon blinked his eyes. He nodded, but he wasn’t really sure. "Maybe he wanted to achieve something before he could face you directly and confess? You know he had been abroad for the past few years, right? He couldn’t attend our wedding either. As soon as he returned to the country, he started plotting against us. Well, mostly you. So I can’t think of any other reason than that."
"Have you been reading too many romance novels these days?" Helena looked at him and asked.
