Chapter 94: Hunting Dogs

That was all the information that Ryker was able, willing, to provide. I knew he was still hiding a lot from us, and I couldn’t blame him, but it rubbed me the wrong way. Aren’t we supposed to be the ones doing all the investigation?

We thanked him, though, as we stood and left his office, promising to get in touch, and he provided ways that could happen.

Ryker yawned after his office door closed. "Ah! They were troublesome kids, too bad what’s about to happen to them."

Behind him, the darkness ripped, ow pulled together, and a figure with a hood bowed. "Then why do you set them on the chaos Cult like a hunting dog?" The voice was female.

Ryker laughed. "Hunting dogs? They are nothing more than fat rabbit. A bait to reel in something bigger. And I didn’t exactly lie to them."

"You didn’t tell them the whole truth either."

"But I did warn them. And what is the truth? That the Chaos Cult will tear them limb by limb? They know that already. Don’t you hear when I was warning them about how resourceful and powerful the organization is?"

There’s a reason he’s after the Chaos Cult himself, it was simply for the gain of it. It was true that the Tower Guards were split into two – white and black fractions– that was what it was jokingly referred to.

The black fraction wanted them to submit the power, that is, in the Tower, while the white fraction wanted to remain stubbornly independent.

Both sides have their perfect reasons: the dark believe they will gain much power that way, and the whites believe it will be a ’fake’ power.

Ryker thought both sides were full of bullshit, but those two fractions held real power over the Tower Guards. And right now, the white is slightly more powerful – what that means is that the policies of the Tower Guards’ rights now are shaped like a knight in shining armor.

Ryker wanted promotion and cutting a big chunk from the Chaos Cult would give him that. The problem is that he didn’t want to actively go after them, but what if something happens so big that it can’t be easily swept under the rug?

Ryker smiled. "They will be the bait for the Chaos Cult on this floor. It’s a table served before me. I don’t know if Kaelith, who we haven’t seen since, will cause such a commotion. This will be my only chance. I must nail them down."

"And what do you want me to do?"

"Follow them and gather any information you can through them."

"And when I gather something strong enough to nail the cult?"

"You can dispose of the youngsters then. They won’t be useful anymore and will only muddle with the evidence and investigation. Go now. Don’t let them know you are after them. Make no mistake."

The figure bowed and quietly exited the room.

Ryker’s eyes twitched. All plans for his promotion had been laid; he just had to lean back and let everything fall into place.

It took two whole days for Temur and me to begin our journey to Orha. Left to us, we would have left the wastelands behind immediately we were done with the Captain.

But Thayer wouldn’t hear of it. He told us we had to prepare for the journey. So first, he converted all our money into gold coins for us to carry instead of transferable ones.

Then we went through the process of monster selling and buying equipment and provisions we might need for our journey. But the main reason we listened to Thayer was because he wanted to give us a guide that would help us in Orha.

"Temur, Torvan, meet Cormac." Thayer said. He gestured towards the man. He is human but taller than even Temur; he wore a cloak that covered his head but not fully, so we saw his short black hair and hard black eyes.

His face and bare arms were covered in scars, and a longsword hung casually on his back. He looked us over with a flat expression and said nothing for a while.

"He’s an expert in the city, and his job is to guide Awakeners in cities like Orha. He also works as a bodyguard, but for this one, he’ll be doing everything combined. Remember that he’ll be free from any obligations if he decides a situation is too high risk," Thayer slapped the man on the shoulder; it was like hitting a rock. "Of course, after he warns you!"

Temur grunted and shook hands with the man. As warriors, we took each other’s measures. Temur was surprised to feel that much strength coming from the man, he must have gained years of experience. "We’ll be in your care."

Cormac, who looked to be in his forties, nodded briskly. "I look forward to working with you as well."

I settled for a wave instead. "It’s so much better now that we have someone to show us the way!"

Thayer clapped and faced us. His smile had returned. "This is the last help I can give you, but if there’s anything I can still do, then reach out, only if it won’t implicate you, of course!"

"I’ve paid Cormac, and you can trust him; he usually works for my father, and I’ve explained the situation to him. He’ll stick with you until things begin to get hot."

"Thank you for everything, really Thayer. Thank you." I gave a little bow. Frankly, the rich guy had done more than I expected considering we weren’t that close.

Thayer waved it away. "Of course, I’m doing this for pretty Litha, it’s nothing. You must bring her back. Best of luck!"

"Thanks," Temur also bowed. "I wish you luck on your new Guild."

The rest of the monsters of the Gold also came to say their farewell. Tim joked with me not to die before he could have a rematch.
