Chapter 78: Fast

I explained to the others what had happened when I first met Kaidos back in the test and how the guy had wanted to force some kind of contract on me that would control me and do his bidding.

Kaidos came closer, and the spears followed him. "I should watch out for the other two. Meaning I should kill them, right? Right?"

He grinned.

And then attacked, lightning fast, like quick sliver. Blood uncoiled and slammed into the shield like a whip sword. Spider-web cracks appeared on it, spreading fast, but Litha quickly reinforced it. "Guys! You can attack from inside here, just leave the defense to me. I’ll let you know if I can’t hold it anymore."

But before we made a move, the Government team interfered.

Arin leaped and cut downward; his sword ripped through the air and sent a bolt of light that cut in arcs. Blood surged out to parry the clash, causing a small shockwave.

The two looked at each other, Arin the knight and Kaidos, with his blood sloshing behind him. The beast-man hesitated, if the Government heard what had happened here, then they would hunt him and those he worked for.

Nowhere in the Tower would be safe. Kaidos groaned. Why did it have to be the Government? They were a snotty bunch. Then he paused. There would only be a problem if the Government learned about it.

What if they didn’t? If he killed everyone here, then who would carry the news to them?

He grinned. "A knight, eh? Your Grimoire made you a hero. Must be nice."

Then he raised his own Grimoire, his dagger glinting darkly, wet with blood.

"Let’s see how a hero and a villain play."

Then he unleashed his aura.

Dark red, it smothered the air with oppressive power, his blood lighting up.

Arin took a step back without meaning to; his body simply reacted to the power rolling off the beast-man. Is that an Iron rank? he thought, because the power coming from Kaidos felt like several Iron ranks stacked together.

Even then, he raised his sword.

"I believe in the strength of my sword."

Golden light bathed him, and behind him his team lit up with the same power, an area-wide buff born from the strength of his belief.

The rest of the team arranged themselves beside him and raised their weapons, their expression stiffened and hardened like steel.

"Kaidos. Do you want to fight all of us? We will show mercy if you drop your weapon and surrender. But if you continue, know that only death awaits you."

Kaidos thought about it. The smirk and the light in his eyes gave him away, he was mocking them. "Hum... I’d rather kill you all and add your blood to my collection. Too bad I won’t get any life force, but you’ll do."

There was nothing more to say after that, and the attacks began.

There was a sage on the Government team. He brought out a pipe and began to play; the air trembled and wrapped around his teammates, a spell that would provide constant healing.

With the buff from their leader, the fighters waited for Arin’s signal. When it came, ice shards rained down on Kaidos with frigid sharpness.

Arin followed behind with his glowing sword and almost chopped Kaidos in two while the beast-man was kept busy with the ice shards.

"You think you can keep me down with this?"

Tentacles of blood smacked the ice out of the air while blood covered his dagger and shaped it into a sword. He swung up and met Arin, the parry driving him back.

Arin continued walking forward calmly. With each step, he gathered mana into his sword, his eyes narrowing dangerously. "You will pay for messing with me!"

His sword came down with a cracking sound like burning dry wood.

A bolt of deadly golden arcs leaped out, cutting the air with a whoosh. The attack rammed into the blood tentacles and ate through them, shredding them. One arc cut toward Kaidos; he dodged by a hair’s breadth, and the floor exploded as the attack continued uninterrupted.

The next two arcs followed Kaidos like hunting dogs, but just before they made contact, blood covered him like a second skin. I was shocked when the attack had no effect.

Arin froze and frowned. "Impossible. My Accused Light technique wasn’t able to harm you? How is that possible?!"

The attack became more powerful the more someone ran from it, gathering mana on its own once unleashed.

It was a very powerful attack, and it cost a lot of mana to pull off, but right now Arin didn’t care. His eyes were locked on his target.

Kaidos chuckled. Part of his blood had fallen from the main mass and lay liquid on the ground.

"Oh, your attacks did have an effect but I wasn’t the one that was hit. Do you know what the blood around me is made of? What’s contained inside?"

The blood began to bubble around him, soaking into his skin and turning it bright red. More formed above it, shaping hardened blood armor. Even his head wasn’t spared, it was completely covered.

He stepped forward, shining like a red gem-made golem. He spread his hands wide, and when he spoke, his voice was distorted by the helmet over his head. "Lifeforce. All the blood you see around me is made from the life force of Awakened who broke their contracts with me!"

"Now then."

A long, thin sword the color of fresh blood appeared in his hands.

"Why don’t you come here and see just how many life forces I have to spear before my own?"

I twitched. "Huhm... shouldn’t we help? If we all fight together and...."

Cele interrupted me. "I’ve heard about Arin. He’s a rising star of the GUV they placed in our set. I don’t know just how powerful Kaidos is, but Arin isn’t someone to sneeze at either!"
