Chapter 75: Are we a team

It turns out that the spirit didn’t have a suitable gift prepared for us, so it began to zip around again, shouting and muttering. It disappeared before it appeared again, and then it brought something along with it.

The reward was called, "The Star of Solomon." The spirit said it was one of the knowledge, one of the diaries of King Solomon, and it was very prized.

It wasn’t an artifact, but it was used to store knowledge and memories. I didn’t think it was a suitable reward, but at least I had gotten the Onus from this whole thing.

It was given to Litha because she was the "MVP" of the stage with what the Onus did to her. She gladly collected it, and because "The Star of Solomon" was like a skill, she was able to store it in her Grimoire.

With that out of the way, we moved to the next stage, into the hallway. "Temur, cook me the best food you can. I want to wash away the thought of that monster," Litha said.

"We don’t have a lot of food, and my spices are not as good as I wanted it. We have used up all the best stuff," he replied, but he began to bring out all his tools anyway. "Even if we don’t have all the thick bread again, we still have the stale hard ones. They are always the last to go....."

We began to make small conversations as everyone prepared. The hallway was a big room painted white and black, and it was devoid of anything. I brought out a bowl, poured water from my big keg, and then proceeded to wash my mouth with brush and paste.

I was musing silently to myself about the usefulness of the spatial space rings. To me, it was the foundation of what made the Tower Dungeon, because what would people do without it?

I shook my head when someone tapped me on the side. I turned, and it was Litha. Her blue eyes were like hot ice as she stared intently into my eyes. "Thank you, Torvan." She squeezed my shoulder and gave me a little smile.

That smile reminded me of my grandmother’s own; it was mixed with the right touch of warmth and appreciation that always put me right at ease. My heart quickened and hardened as I was reminded once again why I was climbing the Tower.

I just forced myself to smile and roll my eyes. "We are a team, what else would I have done? Leave the grandpa monster on your back?" 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

Litha’s eyes lit up. "We are a team?"

I shrugged. I knew we hadn’t made anything official, but I was comfortable working with them, and they fought well together. And climbing the Dungeon Tower is always better done as a team anyway. "Yes."

"Temur, do you hear that? Torvan just joined our team!" Litha’s eyes sparked.

Temur paused from turning the content in his pot. "What? Really? We should celebrate. I have wine that I’ve been keeping here for myself. Let’s celebrate with that!"

And we did. We ate and drank wine, after which I was officially invited into the team, even though it was Litha pretending to give a little serious speech.

We slept afterward because we were tired and didn’t catch much sleep in the swampy forest with all the pressure of monsters and so on.

"When will this thing open?" I said. It had been hours since we woke up and packed up our stuff, but still, the door to the next stage didn’t open up.

Litha shook her head. "I think we are waiting for other Awakeners to finish up or be disqualified so we’ll all meet in the seventh stage. The spirit said something of it then."

"Well, they should make it quick," I muttered. And we continued to wait for what felt like hours before the portal to the next stage finally opened.

We entered while we all complained about the time it had taken for the door to be opened. After the light from the door finally died down, we were able to see around us.

We were in a throne room of sorts. It was a big room with bigger pillars holding up the ceiling. In front of us, far into the back, lay a throne.

Small pillars held up burning touches that lit up the room.

There were other people here too, Awakener teams, only the Government and the Walkers. No one knew where the other teams were, and the spirit wasn’t here yet.

"So even the Gold made it; too bad for them, though. This is where it all ends," Arin said, loud enough that everyone heard. The Captain of the Government was a tall man with a broad face; he wore full armor with a long sword on his back.

The others and I didn’t react. We just watched him while he began to boast, throwing snide comments at us, maybe hoping for us to react, but he was disappointed. No way we’d fall for a cheap trick like that.

Eventually, he stopped and started to chat loudly with his teammates. Even the Walkers were silent, eerily so. They wore black clothes with hoods so thick none of their faces showed, and they just stood there as their robes flapped in the empty room without any air blowing it.

Then, more Awakeners joined. Two should be freelance Awakeners but must be from independent people who bought the right to also claim the zone.

Just then, the spirit flapped down. It was bigger than the rest of the spirits so far, with butterfly wings that shimmered blue and green. "Congratulations. You have reached the last stage. This is where the throne given to the general lay, and you can claim it by sitting on it!"

"That is how to clear the stage here! If any of you can sit on the throne for more than two minutes without anyone stopping you, then you win!"
