Chapter 55: Fighting across the sea

All of us, except Litha, who had already spent her energy, picked positions and attacked from there.

Cele raised her hands, and her Grimoire flared to life above her, glowing like molten lava. The midnight sea lit up in red as fire poured down from her palms. She didn’t try to control it, letting it surge out in a brutal wave of heat.

The sea below her boiled and hissed, steam rising high into the air like fog. Awakeners without shields caught fire and threw themselves into the scalding water. Wooden ships cracked as the flames devoured them, and even the section of our own ship where Cele stood began to melt.

On the opposite side, Temur was releasing two arrows per heartbeat, his hand blurring in the dark. His aura soaked into each shaft, turning them into streaks of reddish force that howled through the air as they split the wind.

Ships shattered with loud cracking sound and skulls burst like watermelons. It felt as if five archers were firing at once. Every shot landed with terrifying precision of shockwave.

Temur watched calmly as some Awakeners tried to retaliate, but he had the high ground. The wind favored him and his arrows were faster, and before long the sea was stained red.

Dile, meanwhile, went berserk....literally. That was his power. His white fur turned crimson as a hazy red aura wrapped around him making his hair stand on edge.

He laughed like a madman and howled. "It’s time! Time! Time!"

What made Dile truly terrifying, and why Thayer had recruited him, was that he kept his mind even and calm in that state. His eyes still held sharp intelligence instead of the madness that usually comes with berserk skills. Basically, he kept all the advantages without the disadvantage.

He lifted both hands, claws extended, and scratched the air.

Ten red arcs thrumming with destructive energy tore forward, slicing through everything in their path. Body parts flew. Dile smiled and raised his hands again. "Let’s see how much I can cut."

Tim fought like a child playing with toys. He seized chunks of ships with his telekinesis and flipped them, capsizing entire vessels as if they were play things.

Then he added a rain of stone bullets, both large and small, smashing hulls and breaking bones.

"I think I’m enjoying this a little more than I should," he said, unable to hide his grin.

I stood at the front of the ship, burning through my stockpile of stored bones. They floated around me, held aloft by green flames of unholy magic that flared in my own eyes.

Some were sharpened and thinned like needles. I used those directly against flesh, most were paralyzing, but one needle bone stood out, its surface pitch-black.

"I must’ve bought this," I muttered, "but I can’t remember what monster it came from."

I bought, as well as grap any monsters bones I could get my hands on and hid them in my spatial ring. Now, it was time to use them. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

"Let’s find out." I grinned.

I hurled it at an Awakener who had fired a bolt of burning energy earlier, flooding the black bone with unholy magic.

The power inside it released, not as an explosion, but as poison. It injected itself into the Awakener, who screamed as his body melted from the inside out.

I grimaced, and I didn’t want to meet whatever monster that bone had come from.

The pressure of our assault shattered their coordination completely, and, confused and overwhelmed, the enemy Awakeners fell one after another.

Then my gaze locked onto a particular ship.

The Awakeners aboard it sat calmly, untouched by the chaos, but the beastman standing among them caught my attention instantly.

"I know you," I said under my breath as I lifted my transformed hand and fired another bolt of unholy magic into a nearby ship In a slicing arc. "You’re the one who wanted to make me your slave, aren’t you? So you’re here too."

Our eyes met across the sea. Hatred burned in his gaze but I didn’t look away. "That’s right... run!"

At that moment, our warship flared green and lurched forward, ramming through wreckage as we surged away from the destruction we’d caused.

A heavy hand slammed into my back, nearly sending me overboard.

"Temur!" I snapped, rubbing the spot as I steadied myself.

He laughed loudly. "We won! Did you see their faces? They never expected us to come at them from the side like sea monsters!"

I scowled, though a smile still crept onto my face. "It was fun and risky as well. If they’d had time to recover, we’d have doomed ourselves. I’m surprised Litha came up with a plan like that."

She shrugged. She didn’t smile, but her eyes gleamed. "They would’ve caught us eventually. Better we decide how and when the clash happens."

"I can’t argue with that," Cele said.

The ghost captain coughed, drawing our attention. "And who’s paying for my melted ship?"

"Let’s worry about that later!" Temur shouted. "We’ll be fighting from here on out. Better to eliminate what we can before we reach the beach. Captain, make your calculations now and move!"

He was right. It didn’t take long for another group of ships to start hounding us again, just like before, they formed together and just like before, they kept appearing behind us no matter how much speed we gained.

We tried the same strategy again, but these Awakeners were veterans and seems to know what they were actually doing. They reacted instantly, and we found ourselves under heavy fire that stopped us cold.

Temur called for a retreat, and we ran while the smaller ships chased us. From there, we were forced into quicker, less efficient tactics centered around Tim.

We let the smaller ships close in then picked them off with his stones.

Again and again, we fought our way across the sea, fighting both the tide and the enemies.
