Chapter 107: No slow death

"If I was in my full Iron rank then I would have been silver rank now." Arkin smiled, all his fangs flashed, and it briefly reminded me of myself when I used Hermit.

But I shook my head, I had to focus. The monster in front of me is Iron rank, but it felt like it’s somehow more than that, but not Silver rank. It must be the effect of the poison.

I tightened my hand on my sword. ’This just reminds me that if I have little time left before the poison wears off from them, then I’ll be truly fucked. I have to take care of this and take this bastard with me. Somehow’

"Hey Arkin," I called. "If I beat the shit out of you then that monster will return to where it came from, right?"

Arkin blinked, surprised. "Well, yes, but you are just Iron. Do you think you will be able to touch even a hair on my body...?!!"

I was already in front of him and my sword sang with graceful brutality. ’I got him..!!’ My sword only cut the echo that Arkin left behind because of his speed.

"Aren’t you getting too arrogant?" A cold voice said beside me, and then a punch rammed into my side and sent me jetting sideways; I slammed into the wall with a force that shook my bones. "Why do you interrupt me while I’m speaking."

I touched my side and I grimaced. ’That punch...it’s powerful. It’s like fighting an S-rank Iron. No, even higher. Can I do th....!!’

Arkin did it again, he was suddenly in front of me and punched me in the chest. But it didn’t go as he fully intended; instead of me flying back, I was just moved back a few steps.

Arkin looked down at his hand in surprise. "Will you look at this, how are you able to strengthen yourself."

I grimaced. "That’s a trade secret." It’s simple: my aura can strengthen things, and when fighting, I usually spread it throughout my whole body, but what if I concentrated it in one spot instead?

I transferred all my aura to my legs then, and with my feet glowing red, I flung myself forward. I blurred, almost matching Arkin in speed with my sword pointed forward.

Arkin waited until I was close before he started to move, but I was just a bit faster. I quickly changed my weapon into a spear, giving myself a longer reach that my opponent didn’t anticipate.

"You bast...!" Arkin started, still managing to dodge sideways, but he couldn’t avoid the spear entirely, and his left shoulder got pierced. "I’ll kill you!"

I grunted in disappointment as I quickly provided space between the two of us. "I was targeting your heart but your reaction speed is incredible." I swung the metal spear as if it was made of bending wood.

Arkin’s dark eyes became even more darker. "I’m not going to let you leave this place alive. You are not important after all and I won’t make your death easy."

Arkin raised his right hand, and his mouth opened, shaping into words more graceful and flexible compared to his fanged-filled mouth. "Chaos magic, Slow!"

The mana in the air reacted to the magic, and the air rippled around me; when I moved, it was like I was under the ocean, and the very air had gained weight. "What type of spell is this?"

"You don’t think the Chaos monsters are only capable of strength, do you? Chaos is the disorder of many things. Now that your speed is cut in half, I can take my time killing you!"

I slammed the but of my spear into the stone ground. "I guess it’s time to stop fighting, fairy. I can’t win this monster that way."

I spread my right hand and several things fell. The first thing I picked up was a mask; I was about to pick up the second object when something rammed into my head, a punch.

It hit like a speeding train to the head. My head snapped back, and my body followed. I hit the ground with a thud and my eyes reeled.

Pain exploded in my head and my senses briefly froze. I blanked out for a second and wondered if my head was punched straight through.

"No easy death for you!" Long sharp claws racked my back, slicing through my clothes like papers and rending flesh. I screamed in pain and tried to shake him off, but that only made the claws a bit deeper.

The pain of the blow to the head clouded my mind. I felt like just giving up. With a monster like this fighting me then what can I do except to accept my fate? To lay down quietly and...no! I must do whatever I can!

Anything! My hand twitched, but my weapon was gone; the only thing I was holding was the mask. Right! The mask!

Arkin laughed. "Ohohohohahaha! I know just how to dissect a human. I’m going to do it while you’re still alive....!!" He uncoiled himself from my back and jumped back.

His eyes were wide. "What is that....?"

Just then he felt a bloodlust pressure that made him fear and move away. But that can’t be right; although I have an impressive Iron rank, I’m still not as strong as...!!

I stood, slowly and Arkin knew he didn’t imagine things.

I’ve worn the mask, and now everything about me has changed; my aura is now chilled and sharp, and it carries the faint smell of brutality.

Arkin took a step back as red eyes shone through the mask. "It can’t be....is that the Cold mask? You’ll kill yourself before I can!"

The Cold mask, even though it’s rare, it’s also one of the most well-known artifacts because of its ability, it can boost Awakener’s power.

Arkin’s tongue darted out and tasted the air like a snake. "So I’m going to get an artifact wit...." he didn’t get to finish it because a hand covered his face and slammed his head into the stone.
