Chapter 45 - Meet Up [4]

Passing through the hallway of the palace, Zane couldn't help but feel amazed by the unique structure of the place. Ever since he had entered the main castle, he could never stop feeling amazed, seeing his surroundings.

Eris had been silent the moment they arrived at Obsidian Crown palace, simply following the butler in front of them, guiding them to the Patriarch. Zane meanwhile looked like a lost kid, trying to find his parents.

Sooner after, the butler came to a stop. Before them was a door, the butler then faced the door and knocked twice. Then a voice could be heard, echoing through the hallway.

"Come in."

It was Zane's father. Hearing his voice once again, sent chill through his spine. He did not want to meet this old man again, but it seems fate had it against him.

As soon as Zane's father said those words, the butler opened the door and hinted at Eris and Zane to come in.

Both of them entered the room, with Eris going in first and Zane following behind her. After they entered the room, the butler closed the door, leaving Zane, Eris and his father in the room together.

Eris then went closer to his father. Seeing as Eris moved closer, Zane also did the same. At this point, sweat was dripping down his forehead a little bit. Eris then said in a formal tone.

Vern, meanwhile, sat in his chair, a table full of books and papers spread out before him. He wore the same attire as Zane—a white polo shirt and slacks. Since he was in his own palace, he didn't need to dress too formally. His jet-black hair and deep brown eyes closely resembled Zane's, though age had etched its mark upon him.

"Greetings, Father. We seek your permission to meet the Matriarch."

Hearing a familiar voice, Vern stopped what he was doing and looked towards the young woman before him, who also looked just as a identical. He then said in a relaxed tone.

"How many times do I have to tell you, Eris. If you want to meet your mother, you don't have to keep asking me for permission."

Eris paused for a moment, she then said.

"I just thought it was best to follow the rules."

Eris waited for a response, however, it seems that Vern's eyes was focused on someone else. A young boy who looked very identical to him. He had jet-black hair, deep-brown eyes and was wearing the same clothes.

"Ah, to think you finally made it here."

He paused for a moment, he then added:

"I am quite surprised, honestly."

Zane's expression turned somber, hearing his fathers words. As if anguish was hiding deep in those eyes of his. Zane tried to remain his composure as much as he could, hell, he felt like he was going to puke.

"...Thank you, father."

Vern stared at Zane for a while, before saying anything.

"You may go now."

With that, both of them left the room. Which eased Zane's feeling a bit. The moment they got out of Vern's office, the butler once again hinted to follow him. They then began following him again.

"What the hell was that Eris? You did that on purpose did you?"

Eris had a confused look on his face.

"What are you talking about?"

"You purposely arrange a meeting with father so that we would see each other."

Eris paused for a while, she then said.

"And? Zane, you are in the main castle now. You need to get used of father's presence."

Eris was right, no matter how much he hated his father. They would often see each other. Back then, Zane had thought that, meeting this father was necessary. Since it was a rule to ask permission to the Patriarch to meet the Matriarch. But I guess it was an exception for him. Which he didn't really know.

Soon after. the butler once again came to a stop. Before them was another door, the butler then faced the door and knocked twice just like what he did before. This time however, the voice that came after knocking the door wasn't a manly voice anymore, but more like a voice coming from a woman.

"Come in."

As soon as the voice echoed through the vast hall, the butler opened the door hinting at Zane and Eris to come in.

Eris then nodded, and went in first, with Zane still following from behind. Although it may not seem like it, Zane felt excited to finally meet his mother once again after such a long time. His mother was one of the people who truly cared for him, and Zane was grateful for that.

As they entered, Zane saw his mother seated in an ornate chair, her focus on the scattered papers before her. A grand wooden table stood at the center of the room, its surface cluttered with scrolls and ink bottles. Towering bookshelves lined the walls, filled with ancient tomes, while heavy velvet drapes muted the evening light.

Her mother had long black hair and striking blue eyes, exuding an aura of grace and authority. She wore a stunning white gown with a high-low design, its fitted bodice accentuating her figure while the layered skirt cascaded elegantly around her. Delicate lace details adorned the fabric, adding to its refined beauty. Her presence alone was enough to make anyone kneel in awe.

Zane and Eris stood silently for a while, waiting as their mother's gaze shifted at them.

Zane's mother seemed to be reading some documents, however, seeing as two people was standing before her, she shifted her gaze to the young people in front of her.

And as soon as she did, her eyes went wide. Seeing as a young man with jet-black hair and deep-brown eyes was standing before her, she couldn't help but form a gentle smile over her lips.

"Z-Zane?"

She said stuttering, she then added.

"I didn't know you arrived already! I mean I did get informed that you would be coming today. But, I didn't know you would arrive so soon!"

She then rose up from her chair and rushed to hug Zane. Feeling her mother's tight embrace, Zane couldn't help but feel guilty for avoiding her.

"Oh, Zane. You didn't have to come all the way here! If I knew that you had already arrive, I would have come to find you myself."
