Ascension Gates: Rise of the Beast Monarch-Chapter 46: The Shifting Labyrinth
The deeper Aether and Rylan walked into the ruins, the stranger the labyrinth became. What had once been a relatively straightforward set of corridors now twisted and curved like a living creature, as if the ancient structure itself possessed a will of its own. The stone beneath their feet felt colder than before, and the air carried a faint metallic scent that lingered in the lungs. The corridor ahead twisted sharply to the left before opening into another passage filled with dim blue light that pulsed softly like a distant heartbeat.
Ancient runes carved into the stone walls flickered unpredictably as they moved forward. Some of the symbols glowed brighter as the two challengers passed by, their light briefly illuminating the walls and ceiling. Others dimmed, fading almost completely as if reacting to their presence with suspicion or disapproval. The effect made the entire hallway feel alive, as though unseen eyes were studying every step they took.
Rylan noticed it too.
"Do you feel that?"
Aether nodded.
"The ruins are changing."
As if proving his words—
A deep grinding sound echoed through the labyrinth.
Stone walls moved somewhere in the distance, the sound traveling through the corridors like the slow turning of a massive machine that had been dormant for centuries. The entire structure trembled slightly, dust shaking loose from the ceiling and drifting lazily through the air.
Rylan stopped walking.
"Yeah... that’s not comforting."
The ground beneath them vibrated again, stronger this time, the movement traveling through the stone floor and into their boots.
Then suddenly—
The corridor behind them sealed.
A massive stone wall slid down from above with a thunderous rumble, locking into place and cutting off their previous path completely. The runes along the wall flashed briefly before fading back into dull blue light.
Rylan stared at the newly formed barrier.
"Well... I guess there’s no turning back now."
Aether simply continued forward, his pace steady and unhurried despite the shifting labyrinth around them. The Flame Sovereign Pup walked beside him, small paws stepping lightly against the stone floor while faint crimson flames flickered gently along its body. The little beast seemed completely unfazed by the changing environment.
But its ears twitched slightly.
It had sensed something ahead.
---
Inside the maze.
The corridor eventually widened and opened into a large chamber filled with tall stone pillars that stretched upward into shadow. Strange glowing vines climbed along the pillars, their faint green light spreading softly across the room like ghostly lanterns. The vines pulsed slowly, as if they carried energy through the ancient structure.
The atmosphere felt heavier here.
Rylan’s serpent slithered forward cautiously, its blue scales reflecting the dim green light. The creature hissed quietly, its body coiling defensively as its tongue flicked through the air.
Rylan frowned.
"Something’s wrong."
Aether already knew.
He could feel it.
Two presences.
Not monsters.
Beast tamers.
And they weren’t hiding.
Two figures stepped out from behind the stone pillars, their silhouettes gradually becoming clearer as they entered the light. The first was a tall woman wearing silver armor etched with delicate patterns that hinted at both strength and elegance. The second was a lean man with short black hair and sharp eyes that scanned the chamber with practiced caution.
Both looked experienced.
The woman studied Aether carefully, her gaze lingering on him as if trying to measure something deeper than simple strength.
"So you’re the ones who defeated the Elite Guardians."
Rylan blinked in surprise.
"How do you know that?"
The black-haired man smirked slightly.
"The ruins have ways of spreading information."
His gaze moved to the Flame Sovereign Pup, interest flashing briefly in his eyes.
"That beast is interesting."
Rylan crossed his arms casually, though his stance remained ready for battle.
"Thanks. Now what do you want?"
The woman answered calmly.
"The same thing everyone wants."
"The inheritance."
Her beast stepped forward.
A massive stone panther.
Its body looked carved from solid black granite, every muscle defined by hard, angular edges. Thin glowing lines ran along its limbs and across its back like molten veins beneath the stone surface.
The black-haired man summoned his beast as well.
A large wind hawk with brilliant silver feathers appeared beside him, its wings spreading wide as it settled onto the chamber floor. A faint current of wind swirled around its body, stirring dust and loose debris.
Rylan sighed.
"Of course it’s going to be like this."
Aether remained calm.
Neither side attacked yet.
Both groups were evaluating each other carefully, measuring strength, waiting for the slightest sign of weakness.
Then the woman spoke again.
"There are still too many challengers."
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
"Reducing the numbers would benefit everyone."
Rylan muttered quietly.
"They all say that before trying to kill us."
The stone panther stepped forward, its claws scraping sharply against the stone floor.
The wind hawk spread its massive wings.
The battle was about to begin.
The stone panther moved first.
It lunged toward Aether with incredible speed, its massive body crossing the chamber in the blink of an eye. But the Flame Sovereign Pup reacted instantly.
"Crimson Step."
The fiery beast vanished in a burst of flame.
It reappeared beside the panther and slashed with burning claws that left glowing streaks of heat in the air. The panther barely dodged in time, sparks erupting where fire met stone.
Meanwhile, the wind hawk attacked from above.
A sharp gust of compressed wind shot downward toward Rylan like a falling blade.
"Azure Coil!"
His serpent wrapped around him like a living shield, its thick body forming protective loops. The wind blast slammed into the coiled serpent but failed to break through the defense.
Rylan pointed upward.
"Get that bird!"
The serpent launched itself toward the hawk, its body uncoiling like a spring. Its jaws glowed with intense blue energy as it struck upward.
The hawk flapped its wings violently, creating another powerful gust that pushed the serpent away before it could bite.
The chamber erupted into chaos.
Fire.
Wind.
Stone.
Blue energy.
Attacks clashed across the battlefield, each beast unleashing its abilities without restraint. The stone panther tried to overpower the Flame Sovereign Pup with brute force, smashing its heavy paws against the ground and lunging repeatedly.
But the fiery beast moved far faster.
Each time the panther attacked, flames flashed across the battlefield.
The pup struck again.
And again.
Meanwhile, Rylan struggled against the wind hawk’s aerial advantage.
"That bird is annoying!"
The hawk dove downward.
Its talons aimed directly at Rylan.
But before it could strike—
Aether stepped forward.
The golden energy around him flickered briefly.
The hawk’s attack was deflected, an invisible force pushing it aside.
It pulled back immediately.
The black-haired challenger frowned.
"You’re interfering?"
Aether said nothing.
But his gaze had already shifted toward the deeper part of the chamber.
Something else had entered the battlefield.
Something far stronger.
---
A low growl echoed across the chamber.
The sound was deep enough to vibrate through the stone walls themselves.
The ground trembled.
All four beast tamers froze.
The stone pillars began cracking slowly, thin fractures spreading across their surfaces as dust rained down from above.
Then—
The ground split open.
A massive creature slowly emerged from beneath the stone floor, forcing slabs of rock aside as it rose. Its body looked like a grotesque fusion of stone and bone, ancient and unnatural.
Six enormous legs supported its massive frame.
Its head resembled a monstrous wolf skull, hollow eye sockets glowing with eerie pale green fire.
Ancient runes burned faintly along its spine.
Rylan’s eyes widened.
"That... is definitely not a statue."
The woman in silver armor looked equally shocked.
"An ancient guardian..."
The black-haired man whispered under his breath.
"This wasn’t supposed to happen yet."
The beast let out a deafening roar that shook the entire chamber. The sound carried an overwhelming pressure that made every beast present instinctively recoil.
Even the stone panther stepped back cautiously.
The guardian slowly raised its head.
Its glowing eyes scanned the four challengers.
Then it spoke.
Not with words.
But with raw killing intent.
Anyone inside the chamber was now its enemy.
Rylan sighed.
"Well... this just got worse."
The massive creature slammed one of its legs into the ground.
The resulting shockwave cracked the stone floor, sending fragments of rock scattering across the chamber.
Aether watched it carefully.
This was different from the statue warriors.
Different from the guardians earlier.
This creature was alive.
Ancient.
And extremely powerful.
The silver-armored woman spoke quickly.
"If we fight each other now, we’ll all die."
The black-haired man nodded reluctantly.
Rylan looked at Aether.
"Temporary team-up?"
Aether gave a small nod.
For now, survival came first.
The ancient guardian attacked.
Its massive claw slammed toward the challengers with terrifying force.
The stone panther jumped forward to intercept the blow, meeting the attack head-on. The impact threw the panther across the chamber like a broken statue.
The wind hawk unleashed a powerful tornado attack. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Razor-sharp wind blades struck the creature’s armored body repeatedly.
But they barely left scratches.
Rylan’s serpent lunged forward.
Its glowing fangs bit deep into one of the guardian’s legs.
Blue energy erupted violently.
The creature roared in pain.
Finally—
The Flame Sovereign Pup attacked.
Its entire body ignited in blazing crimson flames.
"Flame Crown."
The pup leaped into the air like a burning comet, flames trailing behind it in a brilliant arc.
Then it crashed directly into the guardian’s skull.
BOOM.
Fire exploded across the chamber.
The guardian staggered backward under the force of the impact. Cracks spread slowly along the glowing rune lines across its head, thin fractures glowing with red heat.
For the first time—
It had been truly damaged.
Aether watched carefully.
The creature had a weakness.
And he had already found it.
The glowing runes along its spine.
But defeating it would not be easy.
Not even with four beast tamers.
The battle for survival had only just begun.
---
Deep Within the Ruins
Far below the labyrinth...
Inside the hidden chamber...
The mysterious observer continued watching the battle through floating magical projections that hovered silently in the darkness. Each projection displayed a different part of the ruins, but the largest one focused entirely on the chamber where the ancient guardian had awakened.
The guardian’s awakening had not gone unnoticed.
The figure’s attention lingered on Aether.
On the strange energy surrounding him.
The ruins had begun reacting more strongly ever since he entered, their ancient mechanisms stirring in ways they had not for centuries.
That energy...
It did not belong to this world.
The observer leaned slightly closer to the projection, studying the image of Aether as the battle continued to rage above.
Curiosity had grown stronger.
Many challengers had come before.
None had caused the ruins to behave like this.
But this one...
This challenger was different.
The labyrinth would continue testing them.
Harder trials.
Deadlier battles.
Soon the weak would fall.
Only the strongest would reach the deepest level of the ruins.
And only one would uncover the secret hidden there.
For now—
The observer continued watching silently.
Waiting.
